Ten years in the jailer's eye
And I'm thinkin' 'bout my baby
Looking at my life go by
Falling in the streets, I'm broken
And I'm laughing at the poor man talking to the blind man
If you could choose anybody to lead Aotearoa, who would it be?
Maybe you’d like to see Jacinda back, or perhaps you’d prefer some more John Key? Hmm, if it was that second one it might be that you’re in the wrong place.
Perhaps you look to the future and think, why wait? Life’s short, let’s just have Chlöe already. As Aussie sports commentators like to say - “if you’re good enough, you’re old enough.”
I’m sure Chlöe would make a few mistakes, but I reckon even the things she’d try that didn’t work out 100% would be better than Luxon’s or Willis’ plans if they were to come to perfect fruition.
See the lady in the street car lights
Colour a la Toulouse
Television and the red, red wine
So won't you tell me, won't you tell me the truth?
Are you old enough?
What about if you were in the US? They’ve got an election this year. Maybe you are in the US? A shout out to American subscribers.
Fun fact - about half of those who receive Nick’s Kōrero in the States are in either California or New York, but more surprisingly perhaps is that after that it’s Florida!
I imagine they’re probably expat Kiwis, but maybe it’s Cuban exiles who’ve had a change of heart about socialism and have a particular interest in NZ politics? Seems unlikely - until you remember we’re talking about Florida.
Anyway, maybe it would be better for that country if they jumped straight to the bright young candidate that everyone knows is the future?
I speak of course of Taylor Swift. Are you ready for President Tay Tay?
Turns out the crazy conspiracy theorists were half right. The super bowl was rigged for Taylor, but not so she could endorse Joe Biden. Clearly this is a young woman with her eyes on the prize.
Of course I’m joking, but we are talking about America - so would you rule it out?
I should just mention that there will be a paywall later in this newsletter. As a reminder if you’re a Gold Card holder, a student, or on a low income, you’re most welcome to take advantage of this special of 20% off, either annually or monthly.

On the other hand the US could just pick from the stellar options available. The, about to be bankrupt and/or incarcerated, orange one, or the even older one who seems to be having a deteriorating relationship with reality.
It’s impossible for an outsider, and I’m sure for many Americans, to understand how a country that has produced so many incredible people, a society so driven by competition and winning, could say that the best two people for the job are Trump and Biden.
If you used it for a Netflix plot people would complain that it just wasn’t believable.
Time goes and here we stand
Laughing at the side show, sinking in the quick sand
The other side of another world
Scratch my back, go the coloured girls
Yeah, oh, yeah
And yet here it is, the unfathomable reality that the only options available, in the land of a million choices, are an increasingly pathetic would be dictator who ought to be in jail, and a man who seems lost in so many ways - and I’m not even sure anymore that his moral compass is still working.
I wouldn’t go so far as many are and call the man “Genocide Joe”, that doesn’t sit right with me, despite his cowardly, inexcusable inaction on Israel’s offensive on Gaza. But the long familiar refrain of “at least he’s better than Trump”, is ringing a little hollow.
Seriously, how can these two seriously be the best available?
Don’t get me wrong, Trump is by any measure an utterly repugnant human being. As this clip from a couple of days ago shows his impact on the US, in terms of stacking the Supreme Court, and the shift to favouring the theocratic over the scientific, is real.
But I’m sure you don’t need any persuading that Trump is awful. The bigger issue right now is his rival Joe Biden. The calls are becoming louder suggesting that actually maybe another four years isn’t such a good idea after all.
On the one hand it’s a very slippery slope to start ruling our people from being the President based on demographics, although I’m sure many groups in the US would say - “Hello? Join the club.”
On the other hand, even though Joe is better than Trump in so many ways, and by and large a good man, though you might have to block your ears to the dying cries of Palestinians - as he has, you’ve got to ask yourself the following:
