An excellent effort again today Nick! When will we see a truthful response from Luxton, Bishop and Co? I did enjoy Q & A yesterday - Jack Tame is so good at his job - what a contrast...

Great korero Nick. It will be a cold day in hell before Chris Bishop is able to differentiate truth from fiction. He represents to face of American Republican politics visited on New Zealand. Unethical, unscrupulous and without compassion for anybody or anything save his own self promotion. As an ex tobacco lobbyist he is well versed in the craft of lying, but substantially as a National MP his main failing is he has no vision for New Zealand save for the blind pursuit of power and control for its own sake.

I too cannot tell a lie, but Chris Bishop can stand there, cool as a cucumber, and lie several times in a row despite being presented with the evidence. Are we to believe that neither he, or Christopher Luxon, didn't know it w a s 35 shops, not one?

SallyT's avatar

If they weren't lying then they either didn't bother to read the report, they skim read it or they read it and didn't know how to interpret the data. Or a 'junior staff member" read it for them. None of these options is good and I tend to toward to the lying option as this seems to be a pattern.

Not having done the work seems to be behind some of the lies. Not good enough really.

SallyT's avatar

Definitely not good enough

Oh my gosh Nick you always hit the mark with your posts. It must be something to do with your penchant for telling the truth!! What a pack of devious people have been given the reins of power and how apparent it is that they either attended the John Key Political Academy or the Winston Peters School of Lie and Attack. The only redeeming feature for Luxton is that he talks such word salad drivel that the lies are harder to pick up on. However from now on it is also clear that anything he or Bishop states is in fact a lie. Aotearoa deserves better than this Govt.

I smell the Crosby Textor songbook at play. Key used them too, as have the Tories in the UK. It seems to be the ‘just tell them something and as they want a National government, they will swallow it!’

Mac Stevenson's avatar

Agreed Tony

“The Emperor has no clothes”. Have the 38% who voted in this muppet realised what they have done. Any second thoughts? “Luxon is the answer “ so WHAT WAS THE BLOODY QUESTION!!!!!! ? I “assume” the age demographic that voted him in will be requiring the health services due to age BUT that ain’t going to happen cause there will be too many requiring that same service for smoking related issues. Be careful what you say and wish for is all I can say OH and you can’t cure STUPID

Julie Mac's avatar

Thanks for reminding me of that old favourite .....can't cure STUPID

Will be my now used catch phrase

Yes Nick you are so right. As a team leader and principal I have interviewed multiple applicants, done referee and background checks and read CV’s. Most of the time you can fathom who is genuine and who is building up their ego. I’m afraid National’s strategy to win the election and fool the electorate was well planned and orchestrated. Of course they were lying about the northern scenario in regards to selling cigarettes. It was to counteract the negativity about making changes to the smoke free policy. Not once did Luxon acknowledge the harm that would be done as he was more interested in the black market ram raids as a selling point. So he’s working with his mates to gather revenue so there’s no more ram raids but in fact more shops to ram raid . He is not committed to the health of all. Once a liar always a liar!

Good one Nick, I do enjoy your droll sense of humour! To tell the 'truth,' I enjoyed seeing Jack Tame demolish Chris Bishop on Q&A.

When are the Government going to tell us how much money will be wasted in the next 3 years by tossing out good Labour/Green policies. Has the finance minister even tried to look at future costs or is she only focused on Tax cuts for the well off? I wonder what 'Truths' will be in her Mini Budget.

It must be catching. Nicola Willis has also shown herself to have a distant relationship with being truthful. I did not see the Breakfast program today ,butmy sister tells me Luxon was on, interviewed by Anna Burns Francis. He was challenged about the misinformation re Northland outlets selling ciggys. As usual he deflected, and went off on a tangent about the gangs selling blackmarket cigarettes. When asked for evidence that would happen he again deflected. Chippy is spot on with saying he looks forward to Luxon actually answering a question with a straight answer.

I think this is the right time to start an Advent Calendar for this government? They seem to be delivering something shitty every day, seems a waste not to utilise this festive tradition....

Brilliant Nick. Thanks for the full on belly laugh at your hilarious turn of phrase.

You are right on again Nick.

I reckoned Key kept repeating the same lie frequently so people would come to subconsciously believe it. Sometimes he looked like he even believed it.

Mac Stevenson's avatar

I believe he did. He lied so often that he believed his own lies which is why he could do it so well.

"....people are going to start asking questions quick smart if things they’ve been unhappy with are not improved rapidly. Given that many of those things are factors that are beyond the government’s control, regardless of who’s in power, that puts National in a difficult position."

Like ram raids for example. Nick has written in his korero exampkes of news articles about ram raids during the years of the Key government, and also shopowners being hurt -one murdered. The way the media have portrayed ram raids it s as if they were a new thing under the previous Labour government. A family member told me recently that when the tax on cigarettes started to increase, her cafe/restaurant was ram raided more than once. Ths was in the late 80s-early nineties.

In a State where we are supposed to believe any old tripe, your take is so welcome. Cheers Nick. Your turn of phrase has cut through. More of the Standard bloggers, like me are praising your work.

Thanks very much Patricia, I'll be sure to check out the Standard 🙂

Julie Mac's avatar

Enjoyed your well written article. They sure take your breathe away with

their lying it is astounding.

Patricia Flinn's avatar

Why do they continue to insult our intelligence? They seem to think everyone is as stupid as they are?

Lyn Dallison's avatar

it comes as absolutely NO surprise that Chris Bishop will support a lie, or that he doesn't bother too check facts but what did surprise me is that he is married. wow. He always looks like he sleeps in chairs in hotels.

Oh Nick, I wonder if you've got it all out of proprtion.

Dear old PM said this on Newstalk ZB " Luxon said it was fair for the media to criticise the government for this error, he told Newstalk ZB he believed there was some “nitpicking” going on from reporters as well.

Its ONLY nitpicking!!!!!

Whatever next?
