Just one more step down the pathway to vigilante justice, with Tamaki holding the lynching rope. No crime happens in a vacuum, and whilst I'm against theft, I'm much more against the financial conditions that more people find themselves living under. Fix that problem and we won't need any vigilante actions that will only increase violence
Yup, and the police will need to be involved anyway..... so what is the point in exposing either party do physical violence? Our health system is stretched as it is!
I'm extremely worried about the "restraint" part - we should remember the subway killing of an unarmed man during restraint, by a "concerned citizen" in New York in front of a carriage of witnesses not so long ago. The victim was black and the other party white, and the killer subsequently was acquitted of murder, and in fact completely exonerated even though the victim was not committing any crime at the time. Do we want to be like that?
Sunny Kaushal was always a sus Nat fan boy as he rarked people up about the previous government 'inaction' in relation to Dairy robberies and ram raids. I'd noted how quiet he'd become but guess $1000 dollars a day will do that. For all this, this stupidity is all they've come up with. Most see citizens taking on presumed offenders as incredibly dangerous and stupid. As for using restraints surely that would be difficult without 'assaulting' the person. Sunny has had enough time at the nat trough!!!
This has to be one of the most botched and dumb announcements from these fools EVER (oh wait!). When you have the boss's union, EMA, Retail group, CTU and FIRST Union all saying it's a bad idea, it makes it obvious what the motivation is from the govt - to shut Sunny up. It creates a major health & safety breach for staff (including Security Guards) and there will be legal consequences. Also note the changes are not just for retail, they apply to any crime. The reasonable force change is a scary one to watch. A quick Sunny story ; when he was still hankering to be a Labour MP he came to a fundraiser organised by Rajen Prasad. Most of the evening was taken up with his fan boys making speeches about how Sunny must be a Labour MP. It was embarrassing and I was left in no doubt the money that was donated was not about Labour but about him.
Yesterday’s paper in Hawke’s Bay had front page headline “Crime Reports up 9.42%”, that correlates with performative policing if not causation. No evidence or rational thinking going on with this lot so Sunny will fit right in there. Kindest thoughts for your journey Nick.
Thanks, Keith. 🙂 I don't blame National for the crime; I'd like them to be honest about it and do something useful, like meet their promises to increase police numbers.
Wasn't it Hawkes Bay where they were vigorously pursuing homeless people through the streets to restore trolleys to the supermarkets? And policing people's T-shirts and underwear? Going for the lowest hanging fruit and creating new crimes was never going to deter crime in any meaningful way.
Thanks, Tracy. There are impatient idiots. Fi will be driving; she prefers it that way, and is a very good driver, certainly better than she is a passenger. 😂
My partner is sometimes a bit of a "worry-wort", so a bit bothersome as a passenger...but she saved our lives recently with a yell to get my attention...we were crossing a longish bridge over the Tukituki River in Southern Hawkes Bay...since I have been a trout fisherman all my life I cannot help briefly checking any river I cross over to see what state it is in...and some "impatient idiot" had suddenly decided to pass three cars coming towards us, right in the middle of the bridge...I only just managed to slow down enough and move to the most extreme left of my single lane of the old 1960's style country bridge in time...it was an 80kmph zone...he must have been doing between120 and 140, so there would have been several deaths for sure
I find navigators can be quite useful at times. I remember seeing a sketch a while ago by someone whose name escapes me now, about driving with his wife who gave him so much “helpful information” he Christened her SatNav. I wonder where he’s gone……
Just when you think they can’t get dumber…. Another arises!
But to be honest I never thought they couldn’t get dumber - sadly!
Take care of you and yours as you travel. It’s an honour to be part of another’s journey from life, re-living all those wonderful memories, love, happiness and no words left unsaid. Peace and everlasting love be with all those involved 💔
😱 $920 a day for being a Nat shill ⁉️ Initially I had sympathy with Sunny as of course it is frightening to be a shop assistant confronted by people threatening violence & stealing goods you will now lose money on as the owner, BUT my spidey-senses soon picked up "ME! ME! ME!" overtones, which have been confirmed with him trying to get in with Labour, & when rejected switching to National - what do they call getting $920 a day & a high public profile from your overlords these days⁉️ Bribery (shut up about continuing high levels of crime) 👀⁉️ Kick backs (thanks for using your profile & influence to get us elected) 👀⁉️ Bribery AND kickbacks (please accept $920/day to give us a report we want to distract from the continuing high crime rate you railed against before we paid you) ⁉️👀
To be honest, no-one EVER looked up the Crimes Act & checked their watch if they saw someone being beaten up & decided to intervene 🤷 AND no-one was ever going to prosecute someone who intervened to save someone, no matter what time of day. Ergo it is a load of old 💩💩💩💩 that any change is needed, & as others have said, perpetrators who are intentional about shoplifting will take steps to be armed with something to counter any "citiizen" wanting to arrest & restrain them, including going in with more numbers of people so as to overwhelm the "citizen" with force.
As always, reducing the NEED for people to steal instead of pay will make more difference, and those who do it for "fun" instead of necessity will continue to act up - escalating to violent outcomes achieves nothing.
It’s an absurd and frightening move. Having Kaushal head up this advisory group is off the rails crazy. What’s he been doing about ram raids lately? Strange that the media hardly reports on these anymore. I do not want to be in a store where some wanna be sheriff takes down a fellow shopper. Imagine the bedlam, the danger, the miscalculations, how racism and homophobia will play into this. So the tough on crime Nats are an absolute failure on bringing down crime and now we are going to have legal vigilantes. What could go wrong?
Someone in caucus: "I know, I know, we can't seem to solve rising crime, so let's just let the citizens lose on the buggars! That'll appease the retailers who are right there on the spot. Saves time." Desperate dumb-ass measures from an incompetent, ignorant government.
Many of the people who shoplift at the supermarket near me have mental health issues alongside addiction issues, or a few kids from local schools. This will not end well

Indeed, better to address the causes of crime than be a waiting baseball bat at the bottom of the cliff.

Absolutely agree, fix poverty and you fix so much else.

Me too
I think some people do want us to be like that unfortunately.

Given his role of representing dairy owners, you would think that he would be outspoken about the lack of progress on crime. Just a party schill.
A true nat. It's all about Sunny.
Take care Nick as you care for your friend.
Thanks, Heather. 🙂
Goes without saying but anything Brian Tamaki thinks is a good idea, definitely isn't!
God only knows what the Apostle thinks he can now do!! I hate to think. Is he concerned bout his eftpos machine being stolen?
This is his free ticket to inciting "church" members to beat up suspected trans people in public
I suspect it could put trans people at risk from his goons,

Thanks Nick. I'm sure I've already commented on Mr 'Any party as long as I can be an MP' Kaushal.
Safe travels, and warm thoughts.
Thanks, Alison. 🙂
Sadly, I can see this ending badly for a lot of people if it gets passed.
Safe travels Nick - there are some idiots out there on the road :)

Sorry to hear about your friend Nick, take all the time you need, go well.
Thanks. 🙂

Thinking of you and your friend. Thanks for this Korero Nick. Sunny is heading a Quango, a favourite tool of National to quieten the moaners.
