Over promising and under delivering. That’s our government.
It’s as if people looked at everything they were offered and said, “Yeah, I’ll support that,” and now those same people are too embarrassed to admit, “You didn’t deliver any of those things; and the things you said would get better just keep on getting worse.”
And that’s just the media.
Let’s start with Exhibit “A”, the promise of a third medical school.
Cut price medical training.
Back in 2023, when the promises were big and the reality of delivery hadn’t been considered, National announced a significant investment to build a new medical school at Waikato University.
Would be PM, Christopher Luxon, said they would “put about $300 million towards setting up the new school, including $280m in capital, with another $100m provided by the university.”
Announcing the policy at Waikato University, Luxon stated that the new school would train an additional 120 doctors per year from 2027. This would be in addition to the 50 extra places they planned at both Auckland and Otago.
“A responsible government plans for the future, and that is exactly what a National government will do,” Luxon said.
And then everything went very quiet for two years.
Until yesterday, when someone in the coalition must have remembered, “Oh crap, we promised a third medical school and we haven’t even started.”
