Good morning all, time for a return to things domestic. After elections in the UK and France, Luxon gatecrashing Nato, and the attempted shooting of Trump, it’s probably about time we re-focus on local politics.
Unless of course you’re Christopher Luxon and you’re so exhausted from all your schmoozing in Washington that you must immediately take a holiday in Hawaii. Heck getting people who have no idea who you are to share an awkward, possibly even unwanted, embrace or handshake must be terribly hard work.

No doubt hands on leaders Luxon will soon be back refreshed. Back to shaking hands and smiling amiably while those present wonder what on earth he’s doing there.
Still a bit of a break from listening to him re-announce polices is no bad thing, and I’m sure he’s left highly capable people in charge while he’s not there. My apologies, that was an attempt at humour, it’s still early.
Besides which some people are advocating for National to do even less about election promises than anyone waiting on their $250 tax cut, or their cancer drugs, thought they already were.
What the Hekia?
Turns out ex National MP Hekia Parata, you might remember her from school closures and unsubstantiated rumours regarding the PM she served under, reckons National should turn their back on the select committee for ACT’s bill to whitewash Te Tiriti.
Parata said, “I just think it’s a misuse of the select committee. I’d rather we all just boycotted that select committee and let it become an echo chamber of that small, easily identified crowd.”
How convenient. Now that National have supporting his Bill to first reading in their coalition agreement, and given Seymour the platform to bring his ugly discussion to the NZ public, Hekia thinks we should just ignore the contents of Pandora’s box they’ve unleashed, the intention of which is to increase the size of that “easily identifiable crowd”.
This was always the problem with National’s support for the bill. It legitimised a discussion that much of the country would probably rather not have, based on ACT’s 8% return at the election.
National gave Seymour a soapbox to spew his lies about Māori privilege and apartheid for the majority. Racist, fringe thinking that Luxon has brought to primetime and Parata’s suggestion that they should look away from the looming train wreck is, quite frankly, a bit bloody late.
