Something a bit different today I was going to write about some Good News and some Bad News stories. But when you see the first item you might understand why I decided to mainly just write about Good News today, there will be time enough for Bad News on other days.
Good News - Last night was the final of the World Hip Hop Championship in Phoenix, Arizona. NZ did very well coming second in Varsity, third in Adults, and the crew my son is in YUNG ID won the silver medal for under 18 mega crews. Thank you to all that supported them, and other crews, traveling to represent Aotearoa.
Good News – ex National MP Chris Finlayson was talking all kinds of sense on RNZ this morning saying that co-governance of water is merely meeting our treaty partnership obligations and that it is perfectly understandable that Maori want a say in the use of natural resources. It is good to hear an honest opinion from someone intelligent compared to the populist partisan nonsense coming from his ex colleagues.
Good News Salman Rushdie looks like he will make a recovery. Remember folks - good imaginary friends don’t ask you to kill people, even if you say things about them they don’t like. Those are the actions of a Psychopath.
I don’t want to offend friends or others who have a dearly held belief but personally the whole religion thing is not for me . It seems a shame to turn over so much of your life to an apparently uninterested deity rather than face your own mortality.
But then life is short and if some people find comfort in the religion then what does it matter? As long as they don’t inflict it on others.
Not good news – RIP Marshall Napier who some might remember from the movie Came A Hot Friday, which my uncle Ian directed back in the 80s, among other things.
Good News - little old New Zealand made The Daily Show again, this time Trevor Noah talking about the desire to change our name to Aotearoa:
"Some international news, New Zealand may be getting a new name," said Noah, on the talk show popular with young, well-educated Americans.
"Yes, Māori politicians have launched a campaign to restore one of the country's original names, Aotearoa," he said, to screams of 'woo-hoo' and audience applause.
"I think we can all be honest," he continued. "Like, they didn't put a lot of thought into naming it 'New Zealand' in the first place.
"Yeah, colonisers are so lame: 'This is New Zealand. This is New England. New York.'
"Zero effort," he said, to roars of laughter.
Good News – someone calling an Air New Zealand call centre had their call answered. I’m kidding.
Good News - far right, Ayn Rand right not New Conservative right, Damien Grant says Sam Uffindell deserves a second chance – naw.
While there might be some merit in not judging someone forever for what did as a student, repugnant as it was, there should not be a chance for redemption for the National Party candidate selection process, surely they’re on about their fifteenth chance?
The basis for Mr Uffindell being allowed to leave it all behind him according to Mr Grant is that in the intervening years he has apparently changed all his cells!
There is an idea that circulates in the ether, that all the molecules in our bodies are replaced every seven years. I did not research this point, but there must be some element of truth to this claim of regeneration. Cells die and are replaced every second that we remain alive.
Good News - even this guy got excited!
Bad News - Gerard of G News is on a well deserved break so not much G News this week. But Good News – he is coming back and will hopefully be refreshed and no doubt ready to take a large flaming sword of truth to all the bullshit we’re fed by a lazy non-inquistive media.
Good News – the All Blacks won a game!
Did that over night make Ian Foster into a good coach? No. Did the previous losses individually make him a bad coach? No. Could any long suffering Chiefs fan, who he coached domestically, tell you he has been a very mediocre coach for a very long time – oh hell yeah!
But yay the All Blacks – a great victory in a tough game against our toughest rivals.
This popped up in my memories, a year ago today there seemed an absence of Good News:
The Brickbat, to all the people in Aotearoa still complaining. Jesus look around the world, floods in northern Turkey, major earthquake in Haiti with a tropical storm on the way – the sound of the woman on the news discovering the body of her seven year old child – fuck! Afghanistan becoming a medieval state for females. Covid out of control in so many places that are just giving up on trying to control it. We’re so lucky, Fred Dagg was right so many of us don’t even know it.
A year earlier…
Wow 23,846 tests processed in a day!
In other news one of the 'reporters' asked Ashley Bloomfield today if he should offer his resignation - WTAF?
But by crikey I was feeling optimistic three years ago…
I’m sure that nice Paula Bennett will run a clean campaign based on policy, and won’t resort to misinformation, scare tactics, leaking information and other dirty politics tactics.

Good News – Leo Molloy worked out he wouldn’t win and quit. Hmm I guess we’re not getting that waterfront stadium that he said he would open the day he resigned, when his work as mayor would be done as he claimed.
I know a lot of you don’t click on the end song in these posts, but I really recommend you do today for the magnificent Polyphonic Spree, it’ll warm you up – trust me.
Speaking of which – the Best News - my boy lands in about 15 hours, can’t bloody wait to see him come through arrivals!
Right, now what have those dastardly Nats been up to…
Congrats to the dancers, teachers and parents .... great tribute for Aotearoa.
Thanks Nick for your thoughts and putting them into words for us. But best of all the Good News of your sons achievements in winning a Silver Medal at the Hip Hop competition. Congrats to them and well done for all the hard mahi they have all done over the past year.
