My ancestors arrived in Nelson from Germany also in the St Pauli in 1841, having been ripped off by the captain of the ship and told that the money they paid would also secure them their own land. The captain was a German man. If not for the local Iwi, the people aboard this ship would have starved and died. I also have Maori tupuna in my ancestry. Unbelievably, some of the descendants from this ship are claiming 90% ownership of the Tasman district land based on the captain's agreement of allegiance to the King at the time, with a comment that 'Maoris have 10% so they should have 90%'. This is the best example of entitlement and a Nazi attitude than i have seen in awhile. I would imagine these entitled twunts voted NZF or Act. I'd put money on it.
I have to say that in a six-month term of this blatant racist stupidity- this must rate as the lowest of the low! I am hugely offended that he likened Jacinda and her team to a hateful regime responsible for the deaths of six million Jewish people and countless others they deemed expendable! How dare he - the pompous stupidity of the man to say this - when Jacinda and her team saved thousands of Kiwi lives during the pandemic and kept thousands of Kiwi businesses afloat and thousands of jobs during this time! How dare he compare a policy to ensure that our First Nation people have a voice in decision-making in a democracy! How dare he be allowed to spew forth such garbage and let’s face it - absolute pure absurdity- time now for him to go - he is obviously not mentally stable and has his foil-hat on the wrong way!
And I neglected to mention that some of my ancestors were Jewish (the rest were Irish) who fled the Pogroms in Russia in the late 1890s arriving in Aotearoa in 1910. So while they luckily missed out on the Nazi horrors they had had other horrors to contend with. Winston Peters is a horror show who never spouted any of this crap while in coalition with Labour and Greens. I’m sure Jacinda had a firm brake on him, something Luxon lacks or is happy for him to spew such hate.
Thanks Nick again you have nailed it. This man is becoming an absolute embarrassment. He must be taken to task if not by the media certainly by his coalition. I am constantly puzzled as to why those three are buying so strongly into the negative rhetoric that is flying out of the USA right now.
It really tells me they are not actually that intelligent. They do not have an ability to stand back and take note of the state of the country and where it’s needs are. Frighteningly they are just doing the bidding of the rich influencers and they don’t give a damn about average Jo bloggs.
They don't care about NZ at all. Being in government is just a vehicle to have the power to get wealthier. They don't who or what they wreck in the process. They are charlatans.
After Peters ridiculous claims yesterday and the policies his party has already seen enacted - such as smoking legislation as promoted by their candidate who has difficulty with telling the truth - it would be OK to believe that Luxton and the National Party not only support this they also agree with the comments Peters and Jones have made. Likewise all of those policies that Seymour’s crowd has proposed and enacted must also be National Party policy. If this is not the case why is it not? Surely a coalition govt owns the statements and policies of all parties in the coalition and if this is not so why is our missing in action, photo op seeking PM not bringing other parties into line? As a leader it is his job to sanction Peters and Seymour and if he fails in doing so then it is apparent that he agrees with everything Peters and Seymour, and their party members say and do. No wriggle room and no ifs and buts. Wonder how National voters feel about this?
The nutters must have offered Peters a really good package.
Marilyn, if that is true (so I dare to hope), it is the only good news I have heard so far since this Triumvirate of Transgressive Twerps got into power...
Thanks for expressing what many of us think. I didn’t know about the gold card discount but I happy to stay at the regular price. You’re worth it. But good for those who are struggling. I’m not wealthy but I have enough.
I can only think like some of you that the mad uncle has some serious cognitive issues. I wonder what an earth his whanau make of his behaviour?? I met a couple of his close whanau many years ago and they seemed like decent sorts who understood the inequity in this country. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely 😞
Winnie is definitely well past his use by date and should have gone well before now. It is a sad end for him especially after his great work on the Gold Card but also, for those old us old enough to remember, the Wine Box affair.
Once again, it feels like you can read my mind. Thank you for putting it into words that are publicly acceptable . 🙏 Winston needs to retire, now! Before he loses the few brain cells he has left.
I am glad Chippy used that description. What I can't get my head around is why Peters is making a "state of the nation" speech at all. He is Deputy PM, he is Foreign Minister, a member the Cabinet and as a privileged being I expect to see some discipline from him. But this speech is like the election campaign is still on ; Seymour will have a speech next I bet and is running amok. This might be first coalition of its type, but all this shows me is NZ First and ACT are competing for supremacy and Luxon is too scared to pull them into line. Mark my words, it won't be long before they turn inwards. Meantime, the rest of us have to put up with their self inflated, ego driven, tiny poll driven, super funder influencers. And they are supposed to be the government!
Winston First is the epitome of grubby, self centered populist rhetoric. A man so full of self loathing that it has clouded his ability if not his willingness to celebrate his Maori whakapapa. I felt at the time that the kid gloves approach to the parliament occupation by the government and police was a Trojan horse waiting to bite them on the bum, that needed an earlier firmer, much less forgiving intervention. Winston First used it as a recruiting opportunity to unite all the anti nutters under his broad church of a xenophobic, gun toting party, resulting in his undeserved return to parliament and our current malaise. God forbid that our electoral system EVER lowers the threshold for representation to 3% because we would forever be doomed to multiple wagging tails of Winston's like. The tragedy of Winston Peters effect on New Zealands parliamentary process is that too few political leaders have been prepared to stand up and say 'no more, whatever happens, you and your vile party will never be a viable option for government'. luxon had this opportunity since he knew Labour wouldn't entertain Peters whatever the outcome of coalition talks were. But being the spineless opportunist he is, he couldn't see past his desire to be top dog. The irony is that with Peters as DPM Luxon has been sidelined by the wiley Peters who is the proverbial fox let loose in the hen house.
Thanks so much, Nick. I heard this as I was trying to prepare for my nana Uber morning role. I cannot treat him with any affection now, like calling him Winnie. The cheeky grin has gone. All this makes me wonder what has happened……physically or mentally. I was never a follower, but the current version angers and appals me. And I agree with those who argue that Luxon abdicates leadership!
The silence of the media over Peters disgusting comments is deafening. Why? If à Labour or Green MP had said such things there would be headlines everywhere and the media would not have stopped until “heads rolled”.
I have been very perplexed by the NZ medias' performance in recent times....any reasonable reporter would at least be claiming that NZ has spawned its very own 'Trumpian' politician by allowing a man like Peters to become Deputy P.M., one would think...?
“He drinks a whisky drink, he drinks a vodka drink, he drinks a lager drink, he drinks a cider drink…”
(Surely someone conned him into using that song, selling him on the “I get knocked down, but I get up again” part, but knowing we’d pick up on these lines, too.)
A sad, sour, sick embittered man flailing around for relevance.
Brilliantly put

Well said. I completely agree with your comments

Our house wonders what humdinger Seymour will drop this week to get the headlines back. Could you call it a race(ist) to the bottom?
Very nice, I do like race(ist) to the bottom.
Only half way through their first year and already Godwinning. Race to the bottom alright.

What’s our way forward before this gets worse?
They don't care about NZ at all. Being in government is just a vehicle to have the power to get wealthier. They don't who or what they wreck in the process. They are charlatans.
Typo...they don't care who...

Yes a really good package but anecdotally I hear that quite a few disenchanted Nats have resigned from the party in protest at what is happening
Marilyn, if that is true (so I dare to hope), it is the only good news I have heard so far since this Triumvirate of Transgressive Twerps got into power...
Yep! Good alliteration..
And lets not forget Jones who believes his loud voice & bully tactics is good Government.
Thanks for expressing what many of us think. I didn’t know about the gold card discount but I happy to stay at the regular price. You’re worth it. But good for those who are struggling. I’m not wealthy but I have enough.
Thanks for those kind words, I appreciate it. 🙂
Likewise. Feel the same. Thanks Nick.

Yes and I would think they are regretting their decision to work with him -

Yeah, I don't imagine he intended to send up his own reputation.
What reputation is that Nick?!
A reputation for ‘pissing the night away’… ;-)
What makes me laugh is that Chumbawamda were anarchist/communist loving punk band.
