Hi Nick, clearly the brat has not told IRD that she is not a resident currently in NZ , and would have had to file a tax return in the last 2 years , also he rcomment that she could not see how to opt out of the payment was utter BS , you log onto My IRD and access your account and look for the dialogue box that says, opt out - tick this box - done !

A low-income member of my family is receiving this payment. He lives in NZ and he needs it and he's grateful. The people in that category far outnumber the whinging brats. But they don't feature on Morning Report.
The media, I'm sure, go out of their way to find these whingers on behalf of their beloved National Party. I would be interested to know just how many overseas kiwis will qualify for this payment, and perhaps out of that number how many will appreciate it. We will probably never know this as it doesn't suit the narrative.
I agree that the media seek out people wanting to have a whinge about anything the government announces. Clearly Grounded kiwis were politically motivated. The journalist in Afghanistan threw Afghanistani women, as well as the NZ government "under the bus:. Andrew Little has just announced a range of actions the government will undertake to support, and build up the Health workforce. It will be interesting to see how the media report the details of this, and the comments from the NACT parties in response.Nicola Willis accused the government of "spraying money around the world" when some of the overseas based people who got a txt from IRD telling them they were eligible for the cost of livng payment, went public. It seems it is in fact easy for them to opt out of getting this payment. As was the case for those superannuatants who are elegible for the W inter Energy payment but don;t need it. They just had to tick a box,and opt out.
If you are a NZ citizen paying tax in NZ you are entitled to it except if you choose not to. That UK based woman ...realy ! We are in Oz but NZ tax residents as NZ taxes are lower than Australian ones. Not earning anything but on our savings for the time.

I wish RNZ had found someone who was pleased to get this money. I don't understand why the first voice is often against a new policy or practice.
Thank you for this - I'm really enjoying your work.

Exactly Nick. I’m so over the media searching out these serial whingers and whiners and giving them a platform.
A great read and full of common sense and humour
