Good morn or evening friends
Here's your friendly announcer
I have serious news to pass on to everybody
What I'm about to say
Could mean the world's disaster
Could change your joy and laughter to tears and pain
It's that
Love's in need of love today
Don't delay
Send yours in right away
Hate's goin' 'round
Breaking many hearts
Stop it please
Before it's gone too far, yeah
You might be surprised to learn that today, the 23rd of June, is United Nations Public Service Day. An annual event celebrating the value and virtue of public service to the community.
Some of you’re probably think I’m making this up, whoever heard of such a day?
C’mon Nick, the government is brutalising the Public Sector so you invent a day to celebrate them? Just so you can talk about what good people they are and what a bunch of pricks the government are for underfunding and undermining public confidence in them?
To be fair that does sound like something I’d do. Hmm, so maybe we could have a day to celebrate the heroes of Covid?
Jacinda, Ashley, Chippy, that guy from the army that always looked like he didn’t want to be there. Maybe even a small plaque to Tova and Jenna? Or a commemorative dunce award to recognise Jason Walls’ contributions? Hmm, maybe not.
When you think about it a lot of them are the same people. The public sector and our critical workers - anybody remember them?

The pressures on our health workforce that don’t seem to have diminished. Those who cared for people struggling to breathe, and rolled out a massive programme of vaccination. We oughta do something to recognise them don’t you think? When those front line workers really were our front line of defence.
But unlike Covid Heroes Day I can assure you that Public Service Day is quite real, although sadly this year there doesn’t seem to be much to celebrate.
