Today is a pretty bloody awful day for progressive humanity with the US Supreme Court overruling Roe vs Wade and ending nearly a half-century of abortion rights in the United States.
It is like the plot of a Netflix drama set in a dystopian future, rejected because it’s already been done.
Rt Hon Justin Trudeau Prime Minister of Canada said:
The news coming out of the United States is horrific. My heart goes out to the millions of American women who are now set to lose their legal right to an abortion. I can’t imagine the fear and anger you are feeling right now. No government, politician, or man should tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her body. I want women in Canada to know that we will always stand up for your right to choose.
Henning Wehn – German comedy ambassador:
By the time the World Cup 2026 comes to the USA it’ll be a more backward country than Qatar is now.
President of the USA, Joe Biden:
The court has done what it has never done before: expressly take away a constitutional right that is so fundamental to so many Americans
It’s a sad day for the court and for the country.
Now with Roe gone, let’s be very clear, the health and life of women in this nation are now at risk.
Look at television, cheer-leading, hip hop music videos… and ask yourself why does America hate women so much?
Realistically Trump only won because he was up against Hilary and they couldn’t stand the idea of a female PM. Looking back to Obama even in a severely racist country like the US they’d rather elect a black President than a female one.
Of course Donald Trump is taking credit for Roe vs Wade being overturned, he may be gone, may be even on his way to being held accountable for advocating armed insurrection, but his influence remains.
So what else are the Supreme Court going to do apart from overturn female rights and repeal gun control legislation, as they did this week? One can only assume there will also be a massive step backwards for LGBT rights.
The whole Supreme Court system is archaic and undemocratic with politically motivated appointments for life, no ability for the public to select or get rid of people on it out of touch with mainstream views.
You can see why folks were not happy having Trump’s appointment of almost-certainly-guilty-of sexual-assault, “I like beer” good-ole-boy Brett Kavanaugh on the court for the next thirty years or more.
To have the opinions of a rapey frat boy dictating the moral direction of the country, what could have been Trump’s motivation?
Still there are many good Americans speaking out - Senator Elizabeth Warren:
Six extremists on the United States Supreme Court have decided that they can force all of America to bend to their personal religious and moral views.
Meanwhile look at what our government is doing in terms of addressing pay inequalities affecting women, increasing parental leave etc, not to mention legislating that abortion be considered a health issue rather than a criminal one in 2020.
Here in Aotearoa we have a female PM, a female Governor General, even the nation’s must trusted figure is female.
But you see the same aggressive hatred towards woman here. Those bitterly writing abuse online about our PM are not referencing her policies they are blatantly unwilling to accept a female PM. Well, certainly not a strong intelligent one.
And despite what we have here we are looking at electing a socially conservative, religious, leader to have the interests of all the population at heart.
The great smiley one hasn’t exactly been silent on a woman’s right to choose.
Lets not forget that quite a few MPs in National’s caucus, including the leader, voted against safe spaces for women outside abortion clinics. Let that sink in, the man and party that would lead us do not think woman should be able to receive medical treatment without other people harassing them while they do so.
Christopher Luxon describes himself as “Pro-Life”, and he opposed the government’s reforms to remove abortion from the crimes act and bring the law up to date to reflect the modern day reality of what was happening.
While we’re at it he was also opposed to Euthanasia – that’s right people Christopher is happy for your end of life to be extended in pain and misery because it pleases his god. Smile for the camera Chris.
We are currently progressing well, a move to Luxon as PM and National as government would be a backwards step for women, for Maori, and of course anyone dwelling at the bottom of the food chain.
Lets be honest the only way you’re going to get the backbenchers in the National Party, Penk, Simpson, Brown, interested in Roe and Wade is if you tell them they’re being included as desirable acquatic activities under their water quality policy when they’ve already set the bar at nonflammable.
Are Christopher Luxon and the National Party as bad as the right wing conservatives in the US? No, but you don’t get a cookie for being a bit less sexist. Certainly they will find less appetite among the vast majority of the NZ public for these sorts of great leaps backwards.
Still - why would you put a party that is so out of step with 21st century morality anywhere near being in charge?
Forget for a moment discussion of tax cuts versus social spending or any of the other topics you’d normally consider. Why move from a progressive leadership to a regressive one that wants to take us back to the 1950s in terms of women’s rights?
When it comes to Christopher Luxon and his views on abortion next year heed the advice of the woman probably most respected by US conservative politicians, Nancy Reagan and just say no.
I’ll leave you with this beautiful and moving song about abortion:
We have to be afraid… very afraid if the misogynistic anti female, homophobic megalomaniac wins the next election🤬
And look at Simon O'Connor's comments today! He is despicable.
