Are our PM's following the USA or are they following NZ?
Unlike the Progressive-Centrist well-educated old-school National Minister for Education and Immigration Erica Stanford, Seymour, Willis and Luxon have all received Atlas-Network training...Luxon began his whole career/got trained to be a CEO in Canada working for Unilever, and was a an active member of "The Canadian Taxpayers Union", which was created back in the 1980's by an American Neoliberalist-created incipient Atlas Network....by the way, Luxon is also a self-professed Christian Evangelist...no wonder he was so deeply, deeply, deeply glad to be seen with Donald Trump recently.....
Great question, I believe that NZ has been leading the way by electing this horror government. I don't understand it, but David Seymour is part of something bigger than NZ. He came back here, after acting out this horror show, in Canada. He had a similar script, ban native place names, be a racist little prick...I don't really understand what Atlas is, but he is part of that, and it seems to be a world wide movement to bring in facism and white supremacy. Yuck. Ick. I hope I am wrong. It seems like we were 6-9 months ahead in Nz with the destruction of our government workforce, the removal of indigenous language from government departments and schools, etc.
As always, when Trump The Destroyer speaks or types, he is confessing and exposing his weakness. “President Trump threatened to withhold federal funding for New York if he were to win the election.” Indeed he did, incessantly. Good fascist that he is.
The truth is in the U.S., that New York sends net/net more money to the federal coffers than it gets back from the federales. By dar. If “deep blue” states on each coast just said, “fuck off Uncle Sam, we’ll keep our dollars within our own states, thank you-no thanks,” the federal government would dry-up and blow away…
Same for California which is a "donor" state in that it pays more in tax revenue to the US government than in receives in federal funding. $83 billion on 2022 figures which makes it tax positive. Gavin Newsom likes to point out that the Trump-supporting state of Texas is in the negative.
Thanks once again Nick for distilling some of the garbage that comes from COC. Heartless Cu***.
How wonderful that Mamdani won. I've been to New York a few times. I loved every moment . I'd love to return but nor while tRump and his cronies hold a once great country in thrall.
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" - poem on the Statute of Liberty on Liberty Island, New York. Many of us are inspired by Mamdani's win, but also the other Dem victories in Red States. For me, with California resident kids, the overwhelming win of Prop 50 which will stop Trump gerrymandering is wondrous news. But it's quite a fight and a long way to go yet, not least in our country. The curmudgeonly CoC, their dreadful actions, their shrieking heads like Seymour, Winston, Balderdash, Willis and imitator Stanford and the slippery Mister Bishop up to no good. Yes I turn the volume up when Chloe speaks, but also Chris Hipkins. But I also remember the soaring rhetoric of Obama - I even had a Hope poster on my parliamentary wall. The big lesson from New York is the mass movement that helped this win. 100,000 volunteers, unions, working people, immigrants on the ground. We have to do the same and each of us, whether Labour or Green have a job to get on with despite the horrid Luxon et al.
I agree with Nick too, we are lucky to have Chippy, Chloe.. Ive just watched Chippy being cross examined by Jack Tame on Q & A, he needed and showed his smarts in withstanding Jack’s persistent questions.
Mamdani - inspirational. The four words he sent to Trump were more sophisticated than the ones I would use, but mine are more colourful and could be cut-and-pasted for some of our own ‘leaders’. Labour take note of what is happening in NY
Mamdani is certainly inspirational and has proved that what ordinary people want is what he offered. Chippy and Chloe should take note and use the same message starting now while this current useless mob continue to make life miserable for so many.
I think what Chippy, Chloe, and Debbie need to do urgently is gather themselves, their deputies and one of their youngest MP’s, ( to add fresh ideas and expectations for the future), around the table and sort out how they can, as a coalition, truly transform our country into something better than the current one. It could possibly take a lot of courage, some sacrifice and humility to do so but if it’s for the benefit of all New Zealanders then surely it’s worth the effort.
Otherwise we may well be looking at more of the same from the coalition of cruelty and chaos after the election next year. We don’t want or deserve it.
Sorry Jeremy. I've said this before and I will say it again. It doesn't work like that. MMP means parties compete for the party vote. All three parties need to increase it and that means putting out their ideas separately and campaigning on them not together. The time will come if Lab/Greens win the election. That's what negotiations are about afterwards. I see plenty of fresh ideas coming through as a Labour member. Their conference is at the end of this month where there are policy ideas galore to be debated and voted on. Honestly, I am just not sure about TPM. I hope they sort things out soon.
✔️💯 Darien... I keep banging the same drum 🤷 We have to deal with reality NOT fantasy about these things. Chris Hipkins & the Labour Party are representing their MEMBERS when they are not in govt & their WHOLE JOB is to develop policies they believe in & will convince people they are the best party to lead a govt, either alone (unlikely) or with the Greens & hopefully TPM. Same with Greens - THEIR job is to grow the Greens vote so they can be a strong coalition partner, but Labour has to win enough seats for that to happen. 💪
Labour are not only representing their members but are there 'for the greater good'. I'm sure you all have heard Chippy say "we have to all work together" they have to win the Government benches to bring the Greens & TPM into Government. Vote the for the MP you want but party vote Labour.
Yeah I know. Having spent decades as a LP member, MP and with my working class grandfather a Labour MP, and entering the political fray as a unionist during the late 1980's and the Rogernomes, I figured early on that this is my party. It is not perfect by any means, which is why as affiliated unions we fight so hard to get better policies which can become law. I can point chapter and verse to these! I was at the meeting with Helen Clark and Jim Anderton where they finally buried the hatchet and agreed on a path forward. We do know how to do coalitions, but it starts with our own party and our members. I am so looking forward to conference debates and wish I could be there. And the huge manifesto that will come in election year! We are never short of ideas.
I was thinking more along the lines of Labour and Greens trying to help TPM get through the current mess as painlessly as possible, if it can be done. Yes, I too have my concerns about the infighting going on, but if the three parties can establish an atmosphere of trust between them prior to the election, whatever it takes, it will be a very important step toward a united front if one’s needed. Nothing has to be set in stone yet and I realise each party is in the race for their own benefit and has its own agenda. We can only hope we don’t have to wait for weeks for Winnie to decide which flag he’ll salute this time. Trust and strength in numbers is the best way to achieve success in politics, as with any other profession, not behind closed door horse trading between camps who don’t have any real common interests or faith in each other, just to grab the opportunity to rule a very unstable roost.
Yes ; I am not sure that is possible. You will be aware that JT was a Labour Minister and that ended in tears with his "front bums, Labour are gays and unionists" rant he did. I was in caucus with him. I could see his brilliance at his selection for Hauraki despite me supporting a union contender against him. But he let so many of us down. Willie J is probably the only one who can talk with him and they probably do, but together they had the awful roast busters stuff on their radio show. I have forgiven Willie. I was his boss when he was a union organiser at the SFWU and I wouldn't say it was easy! But he has remembered his union roots, starting with the Meat Workers Union, and then Uncle Syd's Clerical Union which amalgamated with SFWU when it went bust in the early 1990s. But JT is deeply invested in TPM with his daughter Rawiri's wife, and his partner head of Waipareira Trust which has its own issues. I do agree with him to the extent that the job of MPs on the left is to get rid of this extreme government I hope TPM can get that sorted soon, because imperfect though it is, this is our parliamentary system that decides our laws, our taxes. So much lost already. So much work to be done. PS nominations for seats are being called for Labour at the moment. We have some great MPs and there will be more to come.
I get the impression that JT has always been a bit of a loose unit. Not quite sure what I really make of him. I certainly hope that TPM can resolve the issues they have but don’t know if he will be help or hindrance.
As for Willie, I can’t imagine what trying to make him behave would have been like! You must have had some “fun” at times. I don’t think I envy you being his boss. He has some great moments in the House and I wonder what he’s going to come up with next. He can be very funny and also very acerbic, depending on what he’s defending or destroying. Always good to watch, though.
One thing’s for sure. We have to keep all our fingers and toes crossed for a congenial outcome, for all our sakes.
Exactly Jeremy - I certainly don’t want or deserve a coalition of cruelty and chaos…
I live in Australia but celebrate where I come from. Whenever I view media reports there’s sadness, disappointment or anger that rise in me. I (and all of us here chatting / being in action) deserve elected representatives I can trust to get on with the job of working collaboratively for the benefit of all NZ citizens.
Fresh ideas and energy you say? Yep, bring it on. Collective Impact…refer Inspiring Communities in NZ and Tamarack in Canada…
I’m Australian living in AotearoaNZ, not finding much to celebrate in my mother country. Quite frankly there’s not much to celebrate in my adopted country either at the moment, with the bright young things and arrogant individuals steering the ship straight into the nearest reef. None of them seem to have the slightest idea of how to do anything about it. They’re so concerned with blaming the “previous government” and “global economic crises” for all our woes, when the truth is that the previous government managed to avoid most of the pandemic, economic and social problems by acting exactly as they should have. We can be proud of and grateful for the way they kept us safe and sound when others were struggling.
I think most of us are getting sick of the bullshit slung our way,(maybe you could make a deal?), and are ready for a change to have an honest, NZ focused administration.
BTW, where do you live? I’m from Sydney originally.
I thought you might have a slight Aussie accent Jeremy! I’m in Canberra so have migrated from one capital city to another ha ha!
Yes the bullshit can be problematic. I like to retain some measure of creativity for it gives my live more meaning and it certainly is a whole lot more fun. So here’s a suggestion:
Perhaps for our elected Members of Parliament we could have a public version of a swear jar (penalising people financially for profanity)…each time BS is outed!!
A small off piste aside. The National Gallery and War Memorial are incredible places to visit. Some of my ancestors are remembered on the walls of the War Memorial, and the National Gallery has one of the most wonderful collections in Australia.
Looking for solutions for the homeless. At the top of the cliff or at the bottom solutions!
It has always amazed me that with highly intelligent minds in govt, the homeless numbers rise. Is our little country following Americas lead? Cringe at the thought! It seems obvious they are. Mr Bombastic Jones Trump clone. The COC emboldened by Trumps solutions of leadership! Slash and burn! Go against the will of the people! RSB.
Meanwhile, Brian Kilmeade of Fox News solution? Euthanize the mentally ill homeless people, (specifically, through, involuntary lethal injection) He did apologise later. However, given that anyone is harbouring those kind of thoughts makes for grim reading. Because it's there, it's said.
It seems to be either that or wonder if you’ll be beaten up by the ICE men and locked up before you’re deported to somewhere you’ve never heard of. I seriously fear for the future of the “Land of the free.” It’s become the “Home of the very brave” or “very scared”
Like many others, I was heartened by Mamdani’s eloquence, passion and intelligence, his agenda, his determination, his oratorical control. (And yes, I thought about Chloe at that time — and wished for several more with her vision and drive, a few more democratic socialists to drive things along.). I so wish we might achieve sweeping change here in Aotearoa of the kinds Mamdani promises. He has a hard job ahead of him and I wish him all success. I lived in Manhattan on the Lower East Side when the previous Black Democratic socialist, David Dinkins, was elected mayor at the end of 1989 (replacing Ed Koch). He brought a much desired sweeping clean approach to the city, and a number of his reforms have lasted even now. He started well and achieved some great changes — strengthening the civil service, cutting police abuse and replacing corrupt officers and renewing the ranks with better training and a more responsible ethics, at the same time reducing violent crime and the murder rate, making safer streets. He tackled the need to provide low-cost social housing, expanding schooling opportunities with extended opening hours in high schools to meet the demands of burgeoning population, creating local medical clinics, and supporting provision of necessary services to the ever increasing homeless population. Sadly, by the end of his term in 1993, Dinkins had been overcome by budget deficits, resulting in undermining many of his programs through cuts to the city’s work force, and having battled ethnic tension and rioting arising from rapidly intensified immigration and balkanisation of new arrivals in the boroughs. He lost office to Giuliani and it was another decade before the next Democrat mayor was elected.
Yes Mamdani's win is heartening for those living in New York and for us around the world, as it hopefully signals a move away from Trump. One good thing today, though, 61 million dollars going towards mental health services. I'm surprised it didn't get more publicity. Maybe some of it can help some of the homeless with problems. Wish we had a Mamdani to give homes to homeless ... oh yes that's right, we have our Chloe (thank goodness).
Neither goldsmith or mitchell strike me as being over endowed with gray matter and certainly don't have an empathetic bone in their bodies, their approach to the homeless issue in AKL is cruel and revolting.
