Nick, firstly, I am gutted about your subscription numbers.
Yes, I know things are tough, but come on, folks, we need Nick's news because it's about the only one we can trust to be honest and unflinching.
If you can afford it, please give a guest subscription as well as paying for your own. Putting it in some kind of perspective: $80 will buy 9 salmon and lemon butter pies from a bakery in Waikanae, or 16 cappucinos (if they are still $5 each), or 4 kg of mince, or ... (add your own comparatives). And none of them give the same value as Nick's Korero, not do they? Be honest!
Anyway, Nick, this morning I told my husband about the Venezuelan president being captured (had seen it on fb) and he said 'why?' 'Oil' sez I.
Glad to see that Jesse Welles agrees and you too. But I do wish none of us were because we didn't need to be having this conversation.
Like Mariyn I remain subscribed. My subscription came up for renewal and was not sure if I needed to do anything. Maybe it was that which sparked large number of withdrawal of subscriptions at this point. Hopefully they'll be back soon.
Very well said Marilyn and I agree with you 100%. If only people who even have just a smidgen of an interest in politics would read Nick and my other goto Mt Tui, NZ would be a much much better informed place.
Well said :-) I'd also hazard a guess its; more about people prioritising money spent over Christmas. sad, but true. I really hope things pick up soon. We definitely need this!
Well said. I re-subscibed as well. I am also subscribed to the Meidas Touch, which is well worth it, especially if you want facts about what is happening in the US. Keep up the good work Nick, you are appreciated.
There goes the orange cockwomble's chance for this year's Nobel Peace Prize - oh the irony that a Venezuelan won it last year! Dylan said it well "money doesn't talk it swears" this is nakedly all about money and oil!
That wouldn't surprise me at all Ange as trump has already joked that he should get the $50m reward for the arrest of President Maduro ..... I typed 'joked' but he doesn't have a sense of humour and his black soul is rapaciousness :/
Happy New Year Nick, I' sure the subscribers will return. It's terrifying knowing that Trump has only been in power for 1 year and we still have 3 years to go. It's even scarier knowing our gutless leader and his CoC supports Trump.
We do not need a four-year term, despite what Seymour believes.
Hesgeth has gutted the US military of so many experienced, mature, knowledgeable men and women.
I feel very sad for the Venezuelan people. If they think they'll be better off now, they're dreaming. I'm sure Trump will make a few 'improvements' but they'll be largely cosmetic and under US control. And now there is no USAID...they'll pillage and plunder until there is nothing of value left.
This is what happens when an overindulged 5 year old, trapped in the body of a dirty old man, takes charge of the strongest military force in the world. It is not just the Republicans who have been frustrated with Venezuela’s independence wrt oil, the Democrats have been part of the whole sanctions deal for decades too. And where next? Nigeria? Iran? Greenland? Aotearoa if Chloe becomes PM? How do I gift a subscription Nick - I would prefer it if you could choose the recipient.
A thoroughly depressing way to begin 2026. And, who will be able to point fingers any longer at Putin over Ukraine when the US has just taken over Venezuela to get its oil? Just waiting now for China to press GO on Taiwan. I mean, why wouldn't they with such wonderful justification?! :{{
I was shocked at the attack but perhaps should not have been. Really bad precedent. US currently not a great economic model. Of course it is about oil but not only I'm sure.
Venezuela has a troubled democracy, yes. But it's not cynical to say Trump wouldn't care about the people if their oil resources weren't a fifth of the world's supply! A dragon after a hoard.
There have been threats of a PRC invasion of Taiwan for the last few years, at least. They consider it to be theirs rather than independent, which it claims to be. Are you thinking of Hong Kong, maybe?
No I know the opposition leader in Taiwan is quite happy to recognize the PRC as part of Taiwan but you have the USA influence as well typically trying to use their hegomonic power to influence the country. Jeffrey Sachs said as far as he was concerned Taiwan belonged to China.I think there is far more benefits for Taiwan to be part of China than the opposite.Just my humble opinion.
Sorry to hear about the subscriptions Nick. Hopefully they will lift again over the next week or two.
Our PM and his government must be relieved it’s holiday season for parliament so they don’t have to respond to Trump’s invasion of Venezuela. It’s a deeply worrying start to the new year. There’s no handbrake (or any kind of brake), on the USA’s government and leaders, nobody seems willing to tell the President that there are limits to his power. By the time the four year term is up there with be barely a shred of democracy or decency left in the US. I don’t think Kamala Harris was exaggerating when she said she believed DT would do anything to stay in power beyond his current term. I hope sufficient numbers of Americans wake up to what is going on, hopefully it’s not too late for a turn around.
I see Winston has spoken and "expects everyone to follow international law". Yeah now go tell Trump. Nick I am sorry about your subs. Your posts mean a lot to me and many others. I will do what I can to get more interest. Cant do much financially except keep up my sub.
I think we might be overthinking Trump’s decision to invade Venezuela. Of course the oil may have something to do with it but I suspect the main reason is that he lost his shot at the Nobel Peace Prize to a left wing leaning woman from a “shithole country south of the border”,There’s only so much Donald can take before the toys get thrown out of the cot or a few spare bombs are dropped because someone outdid him. That a woman has done so, given the disdain he holds for most of them, must be the greatest insult to the greatest ego the world has ever known. I doubt it would take anything more for a demented, paranoid megalomaniac to react like this. Sad, but very possibly true.
If The “war on drugs” was the driving premise behind killing “narco-terrorists”, why isn’t Trump and his band of thugs also sinking boats from Colombia, Equador and Peru, all famous for their production and export of cocaine, and who knows what else? I suppose it’s easier to kill fishermen closer to home and develop a better, more public “patriotic” profile, saving the country from the road to hell these boats pave.
As for oil, who gave Trump any right at all to stop shipments of any product from any sovereign nation to another? It could be peanuts, but I bet he would try to intercept anything he has no legal authority to do so. When will the people of America wake up and put this maniac in a padded cell before he does irreparable harm to any chance of peace across the world?
Bring on the Epstein show and get this revolting criminal off the stage!
Sorry to hear about your subscriptions Nick especially when you are one of the few real sources of current events worth reading.
As to Trump I believe his next illegal action will be against that terrible govt in Greenland after he has dealt to Nigeria. He truly is an outlaw surrounded by a whole bunch of crooks just like himself.
Our govt has of course condemned this breaking of international law??? Waiting, waiting, waiting. But look gang patches.

Nigeria and then Cuba next? WTAF?
Hell in a handbasket.
Hugs, Nick,
Marilyn
Thank Marilyn. That really put a smile on my face. 🙂
I read your Korero every morning at work-its brings me back sanity after watching the news the night before..
Like Mariyn I remain subscribed. My subscription came up for renewal and was not sure if I needed to do anything. Maybe it was that which sparked large number of withdrawal of subscriptions at this point. Hopefully they'll be back soon.

Damn, here we go again, this sort of thing did not go well in Iraq..Vietnam, Libya, Syria, etc etc etc
Ah, but it's different now - Trump and his geniuses are in charge.
Oh yes.....forgot that
There goes the orange cockwomble's chance for this year's Nobel Peace Prize - oh the irony that a Venezuelan won it last year! Dylan said it well "money doesn't talk it swears" this is nakedly all about money and oil!
Trump is getting her Nobel Peace Prize as a trade for putting her in power.
That wouldn't surprise me at all Ange as trump has already joked that he should get the $50m reward for the arrest of President Maduro ..... I typed 'joked' but he doesn't have a sense of humour and his black soul is rapaciousness :/

That was my first thought too :(
I don't get your comment about China when Taiwan is literally owned by the PRC there's actually a signed contract.
There have been threats of a PRC invasion of Taiwan for the last few years, at least. They consider it to be theirs rather than independent, which it claims to be. Are you thinking of Hong Kong, maybe?

The USA has its next, and possibly last, chance of bringing this lot to justice is on 3 November 2026 with the mid-term elections. Polling suggests that the Democrats will regain control of Congress, but it's still a long way out. I'm so sorry to hear about the drop in subscribers, Nick. I look forward to your news - and I love reading the comments, too.
Kia kaha and please, keep writing.

Critical opinion suggests that given the sophistication this has been months in the making not just a spur of the moment getting back by DT.

I have wondered about this too. I'm sure it was part of the motivation.
Comb over Caligula was musing about this back in 2017 Jeremy!
He probably forgot, Vicky. You know what his memory is like. Just ask Luxon, our “great man from New Zealand”🙂
I will certainly be renewing my subscription when it is due and I always look forward to seeing it in my inbox.
Thanks, Warren. 🙂
And Congress? The power to impeach could be used...oh wait the majority are in Trump's pocket.
Sorry to hear about your subscriptions Nick especially when you are one of the few real sources of current events worth reading.

It's just shit every way you look at it. Trump and his sycophants are a living hell. Sorry, to see the subs drop. Gee everyone needs a break.
Will FIFA ask for the return of their peace prize?
Would you want anything back that Trump has touched, Robin? My skin crawls at the very thought.
No words…
Except……?
🤬😓
🤔😂😂
