Why Anna Breman would come here is beyond me. I would suggest she is about to get a huge culture shock. And I agree Nicola's lauding it up as the first woman RNBNZ governor was just sickening. Her comments about Barbara at the Bored Bosses survey were just what we've come to expect from a self entitled woman who rides in on the shoulders of great woman before her and claims it's all her own work. TBF I don't give a rats arse about what 150 business elites say except in their top ten was Brooke van Velden, that famous pay equity stealer, (along with Nicola.) Oh and Winston at #2! Says to me they are desperate for NZ First to be another handbrake on a Labour/Greens/TPM arrangement. Let's make sure that doesn't happen.

I agree that the woman comment was weird. So is her constant focus on her daughters. Do no other young women matter? The 'top 10' possible coalition leaders are cringe making. No good sign there.

Perhaps AB will punch Willis out (figuratively speaking of course ;-)) At the end of the day, these are Governor-General appointments for a reason- so that they can't be fired for refusing to take direct instructions from politicians- although as we've seen with Mr. Orr, the pollies have other ways to assert their influence.

wikitoria's avatar

👏👏👏 oh yes please, let's make sure it doesn't happen.

The thing that scares me most is that Simeon, Shane and Brooke number among the top ten. Also the prospect of an Erica/ChrisB combo becoming the next “reset”

Schools would then be obliged to turn out architects, builders and developers to fulfil the Bishop Big Blocktower project across every empty space in the country.

As for Nicola, I coincidentally sent the letter below to the Herald yesterday. Given the current belief among most of us that she’s not suitable for any role I can imagine, it may make it…….

If Nicola Willis isn’t demoted or sacked from her continuing economic failures as minister of finance, then surely she should resign because of her openness about a National led government’s apparent disdain for Maori. Her admission belies Luxon’s constant insistence that the coalition is “working incredibly hard” for all New Zealanders. It also exposes the ACT/NZF racism, which has been circling in the Parliamentary pool for two years.

This admission is not only offensive and disrespectful, it makes one wonder just how much of the coalition’s rhetoric we as a nation can tolerate or trust. Very little I suspect.

Barbara Edmonds has far more experience in finance than Nicki no boats. And she has been able to do it all with her family as well.

Kevin Mayes's avatar

No she hasn't, she's a tax lawyer, which is a law specialisation, not a public accountant, nor public economist (thank God to the latter- as career path it's only accessible to those willing to take 'positions' on behalf of their employer, rather than speak truth to power). She has already indicated (30 with Guyon Espiner) that she will follow the archaic and destructive regulatory framework that's shackled government for the last 3 or 4 decades.

Having said that, there's as good a chance as any that she will be the one who changes her mind and walks into the light.

wenz99's avatar

still more experience than Nicki who has a degree in English

I too groaned at the "laser focused" comment and immediately wondered whose pocket she was likely to be in. A harsh judgement I know for an, as yet, unproven Governor. Hope springs eternal as my Mother used to say. As for the ranking of Cabinet - Candy Floss leads while Nutty Fruit Cake looms up on the rails and Tobacco Boy is making a late run. I Married a Samoan appears to have come to the end of her run while Slytherin Brown is only battling and may need more ground. Brook No Dissent could be one for longer odds at its next start

(with apologies to all Kiwi racecallers).

Kevin Mayes's avatar

It occurred to me after my previous comment that her legal experience could be very useful if Labour chose to rewrite the regulatory framework. Very big IF though, but if the present government crash spectacularly that might be possible. On the economic front, there are plenty of non-economists that have a basic handle on the mechanics of public finance, and the skill is in knowing where to go to get the expertise to fill in the detail (@Morgan Edwards). The entire Treasury leadership team needs to be sent on 'gardening leave' for this to happen.

Jeremy Coleman's avatar

And journalism, both very helpful for her chosen career path.

🤔 What Barbara Edmonds has (from various interviews I have watched) is experience in IMPLEMENTING policies which affect ALL Aotearoans = taxation & therefore the benefits & pitfalls of any changes, PLUS the intelligence and competence to learn the wider field. She has also shown herself willing to get out and about and talk to the different sectors of the economy including the backbone and the powerhouses, who are the workers 💪

Nick NZH hasn't noticed that Erica Stanford was marked absent from the PPTA conference on Tuesday. She failed to turn up to deliver the keynote address. Her PR team tried two excuses, too busy, and not during negotiations but neither hold water. So much for Fran's assessment that "she has held her own with the powerful teachers' union". Putting aside the fact that the NZEI and the PPTA are both strong organisations, Erica has shown cowardice in not carrying out this keynote address obligation.

Robin Capper's avatar

Heard Fran talking about this on RNZ Morning and all she did was minimise the dire results it presented.

Jeremy Coleman's avatar

She was probably producing yet another brainless “reality” show. It is after all what she’s qualified for.

Willis is just spiteful

Keith Simes's avatar

So nicky believes she is the best man (candidate) for the job - delusional or something worse?

Mac Stevenson's avatar

Surprised Luxton scored 15th to be honest from his performance to date he shouldn't even make the reserve bench. Interesting also to see a graph this morning that showed the rankings of countries for GDP per capita which placed us near the bottom with Sweden one place lower. So another solid pick to join the ranks of the incompetent and clueless who are laser focused on something which isn't working for Aotearoa or its people. If it was a photo op ranking however just WOW. Wondering when do we get to read a mood of the CTU report to balance the mood of the boardroom???

Cindy's avatar

🤗 Follow Craig Rennie on "Locked Out" YouTube feed for the "mood of the CTU", though I guess you were talking about NZME et al ⁉️

Quentin McDonald's avatar

Good perspectives as always, Nick,

The thing that annoyed me about the "mood of the boardroom" rankings was that even the "lowest" ranked got more than 50%. I do think that's generous to be honest.

Cindy's avatar

👍Mountain Tui pointed out that as the LEAST a contender can get is 1%, then each one has to have 1% deducted for a more accurate analysis 🤷 ie without that stipulation SOME may have got 0% 🤗

What a Piece of Work is Nicola. Talks about a victory for gender and then brings in the number of children a woman has. How is that relevant to anything?

Anita Taylor's avatar

What a demeaning comment by Willis about Edmonds juggling family responsibilities! No humour in that.

Diana Coleman's avatar

Typically spiteful comments from Willis. I thought Barbara did very well and proved herself to be a far more gracious person than Willis will ever be. Unfortunately there are still too many who think the way Willis behaves is a sign of a strong woman and leader.

Janette's avatar

What a nasty mean spirited woman Nicola is.

Mike Friend's avatar

Did she REALLY use the phase 'laser focused' Nick or were you taking the piss? I find it incredulous that any minister in this government scored above 2.5!!! They are without reservation a bunch of wreckers that are ruining the very fabric of what it means to represent an egalitarian society. Stanford is utterly unsuited to education as is Brown to health or Willis to finance. As for Peters, I'm just surprised he's not turned in to a Narcissus (or daffidil) since everything he does is to promote himself. Arguably the only correct actions Luxon has ever taken is to recognise he has no expertise in anything whatsoever so has not taken a portfolio that would reveal his utter lack of acumen to be a cabinet minister in the first place

John Walker's avatar

Mike I understand that the tick boxes started from one to five, zero was not an option. So it's worse than you'd think.

A woman as the RB leader makes it clear why they cancelled pay equity, think of the dosh they've saved.

Alma Rae's avatar

She absolutely did say "laser focused". She lost me right then.

Jeremy Coleman's avatar

Perhaps her laser is focused right between Nicola’s eyes, Alma, (metaphorically speaking of course?)🙂

Alma Rae's avatar

You're a bigger optimist than me, Jeremy, but it's not impossible.

I guess ;)

David Rees's avatar

Thanks for another spot on post Nick Bored bosses survey is a great line Darien. They certainly reveal their right wing neoliberal biases big time in these reports. Really disturbing that they have so much sway in our democracy and the demeaning comment from one of them about the loony Labour/Greens/TPM coalition possibility pissed me right off.

Patricia Bremner's avatar

Nicky no boats has become Nicky no grace. The unions could write a report.

It would say "The Ministers do not discuss changes proposed, preferring to fast track them.

The failures of this Government are displayed for the World to see. There are no rankings low enough in a five point scale to show our wrath. The Board Room was too kind in our opinion.

I just googled Willis's background...did English Lit for her Batchelors degree at university, did a Diploma in Journalism after that....in short, the only direct economics training she ever received was a year spent being mind-swiped by Aotearoa's recently installed 'think-tank' (what an ironic description that is!), this country's very own globally extended tentacle of the infamous Atlas Foundation, same North American Neo-Fascist/Free-market White Supremacist outfit that spawned David 'Smirk' Seymour. She is a just an Atlas parrot, to sum up.

And no wonder I cannot stand the sound of her voice...I met too many of them when I was a returned 60 year old Masters Student (in Anthropology/Human Evolution) and spent a year back (had been there 1969-1972) at Victoria University during 2004. Only about 5% of them had any real academic interest, the rest had only just passed University Entrance/possessed an average intellect, and so most were doing English Lit and/or History (the Law and Politics students were recently made separate at an establishment near Parliament Buildings)and their parents (or their Trust Fund) were paying the University Fees, or had taken out loans which the students would much later possibly begin to help pay back.

Then I discovered the REAL difference: when I took on a staff job as an exam marker, I was told that I was not allowed to give any mark lower than a C-minus (!!) because their parents were paying so much for their education...hence they couldn't be failed. Hence most had mediocre grades/a C pass. Victoria University was thus a very different institution back in the 1960's when university was free and I got my BSc in Zoology....back then students came from all backgrounds, and exam results could be as low as D's. In 2004 of course, virtually all the students, especially the girls, only came from privileged private school backgrounds, just like Nicola 'No-Boats' Willis, and they therefore all had that very annoying accent.

🤬 Business leaders have an outsized influence in govt policy and an outsized voice in mainstream media IMHO - but interesting that they are using their "public" voices to show their displeasure ⁉️ Perhaps the "not listening" that ordinary folks have been treated to in introducing bad laws under urgency etc has also happened to them ⁉️

As for Nicky-no-boats-no-grace... my opinion of her can't go any lower and is re-inforced every time I read about something she has said (can't listen to her, sorry-not-sorry 🤮) I just hope the new Reserve Bank Governor is smart enough to do her own research, including reading the history books of Aotearoa in both general and economic subjects to understand us as a country, and what works & doesn't in our unique society, not just what "business leaders" and failed Finance Ministers spout 🤷

Robin Capper's avatar

Those same 'Business Leaders' were the bankrollers and cheer leaders for this mob.

Patricia Bremner's avatar

I thought she was giving Nicky a rather considering look.
