Roche is an ignoramus just a rw puppet for this government that seems to be determined to push us further down the economic gurgler.Judith Collins busy turning us into a pawn for the American industrial war machine.
I was pleased to see Tauranga come out big & lots of people tooting & encouraging hopefully the government has bitten off more than it can chew.
Roche is a political appointee in the same subspecies as many of Trump’s. Then you have the gaslighting from spokespeople in various Ministries and one could despair. But then you witness the solidarity and humanity at the protests and there is a glimmer of hope
Thanks Nick. The thousands who turned out for the march in spite of the weather is heart warming. I just this government had a heart. Thank you too for the link to the Steve Abel story. A poem by JK Baxter that should be better known. I've heard many stories about Jim Bolger and how he won hearts with his sincerity and warmth after leaving parliament. Maybe it's a comment on the way the party system is run that sometimes people act unlike their true self for the sake of politics?
Maggie, I really do think that like Lange's 1984 Labour Government being sabotaged by the RW 'Funny Money' Free-market/Neoliberal man who started the ACT party in 2008, Roger Douglas, (who even sported a 'Hitler' moustache and became the international mouthpiece of the Neoliberal takeover of Western governments) the "Old School' National PM Jim Bolger also got metaphorically 'stabbed in the back' by Ruth (less) Richardson....who became chair woman of the Taxpayers 'Union'. in June this year..which is, as I've pointed out before, a privately supported think-tank extension of the North American based Atlas Network...which of course is the outfit that trained David Smirk Seymour. So c'mon all you innocent Kiwis, "get with the plan, Stan" and realise (please!!) that we are no longer living in a socially responsible democracy, that Jacinda was the last Labour PM to be a true representative (bless her!) of that old system, and the 'kid-glove' political rhetoric that was being used to disguise what I call 'Trumpian' Neofascism in NZ has finally been abandoned by Luxon....
PS And Nicola Willis's only financial training (sort of) that has been recorded in Wikipedia was with the Atlas Network: [Willis was a director of the New Zealand Initiative, a pro-free-market public-policy Atlas Network linked think tank, from May 2016 until February 2017.]
I saw the Guardian article this morning and agree wholeheartedly with Annette.”Yay!!!!” I’m sure that having gone global, those considering migration to a better life and future in New Zealand, from wherever, will be very impressed! Well done Luxon, Roche (or Roach?). Another nail in the credibility coffin for our country.
I also saw what I assume Leah is referring to about Erica in Parliament. Question time on Wednesday, Erica’s indignation was echoing off the walls of the house as she very clearly and loudly criticised all who wouldn’t sit at her table to have a chat about why the government is offering a pay cut to teachers.
I thought afterwards that as she was a “reality” television producer she might have been working on another idea for a show called “Bringing the house down, really”.
Her attitude certainly does whenever she speaks,(or screeches, depending on the subject).
As for Luxon, I’ve just about given up on him altogether, he’s not worth wasting any more energy on.
What a beautiful korero Nick. I always rated Steve Abel and ohhh Sam Hunt! I didn't know Steve could sing though and with Kirsten Morrell who is so good. Today my sister is in ICU after her op yesterday. Seems like it was just in time, but not out of the woods yet. I feel so grateful to these wonderful nurses and docs and the strike yesterday lifted my heart in a way that was long overdue. Meanwhile JuCo is back from the US boasting about meeting the big guys in DC and how marvellous she was, and Winston is at Oxford quoting Aristotle and Plato. His underlying message is really another bash at what he calls judicial overreach particularly around Te Tiriti. Such little souless people. We sure deserve better. But big ups to everyone for yesterday. I. loved that Grant from MUNZ kicked off the speeches in Auckland and Moana was the MC, We know we got this!
Reading Grant Robertson’s book at the moment Darien and pleased to see you get a mention about the “Mondayisation Bill”. Also very easy to see how he and Jacinda became loyal friends. I could work for either one any time. You were very fortunate to have done so.
I see Louisa Wall mentioned on the same page. She was our MP for some time and a great character! Did you have much to do with her?
All the best for a quick recovery for your sister🙂
Yes agree about Grant and Jacinda. I was always an ABC as those of us who supported Grant were called. Jacinda was a mate even before she became an MP because of her union liaison role under HC. My hubby John was one of Lou's OOPs (electorate secretary) and he loved working for her. Thanks for the message.
The event and its support gives considerable hope and example that - People - can have influence, actually a lot! The obvious "take away" is that we need to "up the anti". If the last was 100,000, the next one needs to be 500,000 and also be country wide, in every town and city.
The point for all of us being, If we want change we must actively support protest. And it IS about politic - because what we presently have is NOT DELIVERING!
For those areas under a red warning (Wellington, Christchurch and others) there was no chance to feel that sense of solidarity you get from participating in a protest. So I was thrilled to see those that could, out on the street in large numbers vocal and with great placards. I was especially impressed by the si,e of rallies in smaller centres.
Next steps will be interesting in each of the groups.
I too was so disappointed that we were unable to go and support the protesters in ChCh yesterday. I was also very disappointed to read an opinion piece in today's Press by the right wing writer Martin van Beynen who claims there is little public sympathy for the strikers and that the survey that stated there was, was a dodgy left wing survey. He also claimed senior doctors were on "a good wicket" and that basically the state sector unions have "overcooked" their case. The man needs to be retired.
A typo, "intransient", should've been “intransigent”; I've corrected it now, thanks to the reader who noticed. 🙂
Jeez, someone beat me to it!

Kia kaha, Nick. Yep, I reckon Roche is in for a bit of a surprise if he thinks it's over.
Roche is a political appointee in the same subspecies as many of Trump’s. Then you have the gaslighting from spokespeople in various Ministries and one could despair. But then you witness the solidarity and humanity at the protests and there is a glimmer of hope
Roche is awful. A very nasty sneering mouth he has.
I hope he realises there will be more protests, more strikes, and they will be bigger and more emphatic each time.
This is not 'out of our systems' until the underfunding and under resourcing is out of our public service systems.

This is nowhere near over unless the COC comes to the table with serious offers.

As a reality producer she learnt how to create a crisis, then solve it, and seem brilliant. This one appears to be unravelling before her eyes.
And our eyes Stephen. That’s the exciting part!

little soulless people indeed!
Thank you for sharing ALL of this.
A great read Nick,
Thank you

🤬 That person has been problematic for a long time - leopards & spots etc 🥺
🤗 Great to see the turnout & some stunning signs - I particularly liked "we'll be less activist if you be less shit" 💪 Sums it up completely...
Nick, Brian Roche was right about one thing. "New Zealanders deserve better". We sure do. A better Government.
And a better Public Service Commissioner!
Got to the poetry bit Nick, and had to stop trying to read for a while due to tears....thanks for sharing that with us eh....
