I reckon you are referring to what he does politically, like a slippery eel or fish chucked up on the river bank, out in the open, by an old poacher who knows how to tickle fish....
OMG Nick you made me cry with laughter at that line - little blue pills! What a shallow, ineffective PM we have. He is just like the Emperor with no clothes - he just does not have a clue. His daily life which is handed out to him, is what is the script today? He has no political nous what so ever. The best thing at the moment is seeing Dame Jacinda outshine these idiots by just being herself - authentic and honest.
The best and the absolute worse of human nature yesterday with the Bondi Killings.
Hanukkah should be honoured just like Christmas and every other religious, or cultural event for adding such diversity in our communities.
For me, poignant in the shootings, was the bravery of one man to risk his life for others. I’m so glad he has survived and truly hope such bravery is honoured across all media, along with the celebrations.
But very little on those so angry and agitated to commit such a crime. As media attention is another honour they seek but don’t deserve
“Heartbreaking” barely scratches the surface of the atrocity committed on Bondi Beach for me. I feel quite numb after reading the news. I grew up about 5 kms from the beach, learned to swim there and spent many many years enjoying the sun and surf there. This beach has now become a sponge, soaking up the blood, lives, laughter and culture of a large proportion of Sydney’s Jewish Eastern Suburbs community. We are probably conditioned to believe it was an Islamic terror attack, but as far as I’m aware that hasn’t been confirmed. I have Muslim friends who will be equally shocked as me to think that such a senseless slaughter could be carried out in a country which doesn’t favour or represent either side, whoever they may be. It’s well beyond heartbreaking. To fight a war somewhere where many of the victims have migrated to for a better life is pointless, vile, cruel and evil. I can only hope that this will be the first and last time we ever have to suffer such an awful tragedy on our shores.
It’s just as well Luxton can handle those tough interviews he gets and has such a great grasp of detail. Sorry, wrong person. That PM was hounded out of politics and NZ. What a drop kick he is.
Great kōrero Nick. Puff pastry all round from Sherman et al. Such curious time we live in with a man so clearly out of touch with just about every aspect of the lives and times of most Kiwis.
🤔 Several tragedies in today's newsletter... 1) & the least is the thought of the "wealthy & sorted" PM perhaps NOT being able to have turkey for Xmas? & 2) the fact that he IS our pretend-PM and is such an unqualified failure as a "leader" in every aspect of the job
🥺 3) But of course the most serious tragedy is more deaths to gun violence - first in the USA (terrible but tragically commonplace there), but then in Australia, where it is not common. That (just like the Mosque shootings in Aotearoa) people were targetted during a peaceful religious gathering supposedly BECAUSE of their religious beliefs, but also the proximity to children & families also innocently being in a public place of recreation & family joy.
Sadly, while in no way excusing, condoning, justifying etc what the gunmen did in Bondi, I always felt it was inevitable that somewhere around the world innocent Jewish people would be the targets of outrage against what the govt of Israel has done/is doing in Gaza/Palestine/Lebanon etc etc - I will not be shocked if that emerges as a motive in this case, although terrorist acts sometimes have surprising motivations untethered from anything clearcut. Doesn't really matter & won't make a difference, except that understanding motivations can help to avert SOME people being radicalised...
On the personal front, how many of us checked in on friends & whanau in Australia at present (🙋🫂) to make sure that they weren't randomly in the wrong place at the wrong time ⁉️🙋🙋🙋
I agree with you about the possible motive behind the shootings at Bondi. I feel also for the 99.99% of Muslim families who will suffer the fallout from these killings. There’s a huge racially biased number of Australian far right groups who will have a go at any migrant for any reason, and if they can’t find a reason they’ll make one up. This is particularly prevalent in Victoria against Muslim communities, most of whom are refugees wanting a better chance for a quieter future.
In small towns, if you’re not a white, bonzer pisshead who sinks a few on a Friday night, you’re not a good or real Australian. This really happens, I’m not making it up. My home country has very little to be proud of regarding race issues, and I haven’t called Australia home for some time.
I agree with what you say about the Oz citizens John. The racism is bloody unbelievable. I have 2 adult Oz grandsons and thank heavens they are lefties and not at all racist. As the oldest one said, I'd be on the street if I was.
A very good but sad column Nick. For some reason, even though I live in ChCh and experienced the absolute horror of the mosque murders,I somehow believe that NZ and Oz are protected from these truely awful occurrences. I'm wrong and I know that but the situation at Bondi shocked me.Its just tragic.
About Luxon and his luxflake interview....when Trumps tarries were first talked about Luxon stated that it was not a worry at all as we were in a good place with Trump. Now he's saying it was one of the years difficulties. He's a fool.
Perhaps Tova going over to Breakfast might hold him to account. I sort of doubt it as she ties her horse to the weeks favored haybale.
Great coalition gag Nick. And respect for acknowledging the hate fueled, regressive, mis-guided events of yesterday.
To lighten the considerable load ( and seeing that we're only10 days away from Xmas ) I give you my worst Xmas songs .
1. The Pussy Cat Dolls : 'Santa Baby.'
I don't know about you guys, but obviously the true meaning of Xmas is sex lol.
2.The Killers :'Don't shoot me Santa'. ( the list just keeps getting better doesn't it.)
3. INSYNC ! ANYTHING BY THEM !
4. Alvin and the Chipmunks : 'Xmas Don't be late. ( Xmas can't be late, The Chipmunks can be 5 years too late, 10 yrs, a lifetime. I don't care. NOBODY GET ME A GUN.
nothing says 'shitty song' like sped up voices of those adoring little Chip, sorry, Shitmunks.
5.Bon Jovi : 'Back Door Santa'! I kid you not. I have no words, just scary images...
6.Live Aid : Do they know it's Xmas. YES, THEY BLOODY DO.
Fun fact : Sound engineers were baffled by a really irritating jangly noise when it came to recording.
They spent hours trying to locate the faulty sound equipment and where it was coming from.
Turns out it was the bangles she was wearing.
They weren't around her wrists either...or her arms...
OK, here it is...don't shoot the messenger : The Royal Guardsmen : Snoopy's Xmas.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
Great hearing it for the first time, not so much the 10th, the hundredth .
When I was doing Radio Hauraki breakfast we had a 72 hr Snoopy marathon.
Just us and Snoopy's Xmas playing non stop.
We lost count of how many times it was being played. And that was just the first 3 hours.
After 12 hours there may have been modern pharmaceuticals involved.
After 24 hrs I was visiting relatives in The UK AND FLOATING ON CLOUDS THAT LOOKED AND TASTED LIKE LAMINGTONS.
48 HRS: I found the lord., but he wasn't home, he said to call back in half an hour.
60 hours : I found the 60 hr half an hour sales rep who introduced me to the power of self reflection...and flight.
62 hours: jumping from the first floor of the TRN building eager to try out my flying skills...and that's all I remember.
TRN boss's let me keep my job but I had to pay for the damage to several parked cars, 4 security guards, and 600 lamingtons.
it's even better Maggie with leaving it till the last minute people, hot, bothered and devoid of any Idea of what to get for Auntie Beatrice, wading through hordes of people in the same situation....AND VOUCHERS ARE JUST WRONG !
Yes, we call them jandals.
Does anyone else see the irony in Luxon liking flip-flops?
Perhaps that's what he really, really meant! A bit too subtle for him, but I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt because it's funny.
I reckon you are referring to what he does politically, like a slippery eel or fish chucked up on the river bank, out in the open, by an old poacher who knows how to tickle fish....

Beautiful writing Nick once again 🙏🏿

And I'm particularly gratified?? that the brave hero was, himself, Muslim. Hopefully that might keep some haters at bay 🙏
Totally agree

As for Luxon, he is what he is. What a pity
It’s just as well Luxton can handle those tough interviews he gets and has such a great grasp of detail. Sorry, wrong person. That PM was hounded out of politics and NZ. What a drop kick he is.
Watching Maiki ‘tackle’ Lucks-off last night was Christmas cringe at the highest level, Jessica MM would have been purring contentedly…
Just asking - has the trade deal with India (which Luxon was very vocal about) been signed yet???
He said it was “nearly there”.
I think Putin might have got there first.
Now we have repeated footage of the gun men shooting people.....Why? its just like the CHCH shooting all over again.
It's like the Christchurch Call never happened
Heard pretty much the same light weight questions on Morning Report with Corin Dann this morning.
Please can Kim Hill come out of retirement to give Luxon a proper grilling before the election, your country needs you Kim.
Also 100% agree with you Nick on the tragic events in Sydney yesterday.
I still think Luxon's best quote is that they are all working incredibly hard and are laser focused. Yeah right!
YEP!!
This country’s greatest regret is this coalition government. They spell our demise as kiwis. A “good” politician is very hard to find😢

It's not Xmas till ya hear "Snoopys Christmas"
He probably needs a wedding planner for his parents wedding
ABSOLUTELY JOHN !!
I really pity the retail assistants working in our shopping malls. They have a constant diet of "Christmas music" for about 2 months. Must be cruel.
it's even better Maggie with leaving it till the last minute people, hot, bothered and devoid of any Idea of what to get for Auntie Beatrice, wading through hordes of people in the same situation....AND VOUCHERS ARE JUST WRONG !
CL The most insincere politician I have ever heard.
