Great stuff Nick. And since you mentioned Trump, has anyone else noticed that the remarkable Zohran Mamdani and the amazing changes to the US political landscape that he is leading is getting very limited coverage in NZ media.

Darien Fenton's avatar

Yeah I did and what a contrast to Trump.

Kim Shaw-Williams's avatar

Me also...Zohran's a lonely beacon of hope for Trump's downfall, hopefully in the very near future....and I liked your "Winston J, Trump", Nick, very much indeed...

Chrissie Cope's avatar

Yes, I do and celebrate from afar. Watched his anniversary speech yesterday, which he delivered presidential style before Trump made gave his ramble - on YouTube for anyone interested - outstanding.

Peter Findlay's avatar

I’m loving what he has achieved - in such a short time too.

Leonie's avatar

And the wonderful thing is.. the crime rate has plummeted!!

Such a beautiful incredible leader!

Gives me hope! ❤️

Methinks Andrea struck a nerve. "Angry old man yelling at clouds". But thanks to Winston for advertising it or I might have missed the article. He does seem ever increasingly unhinged and his ramblings are becoming more incoherent by the week. As for his choice of party hopefuls, undead is a reasonable term to use to describe them.

Marilyn Wilson's avatar

Undead is also a very kind word to describe them! Horrific creepy old men is how I would describe them

I am so sick of Winston Peters. He was first elected for National in 1978/79 - 48 years ago when some of us weren't even born or at least our kids weren't. Way back when Bastion Point protestors were forcibly removed from the land by the cops. Way back when there was a strike at Mangere Bridge and a General Strike in 1979. Way back when Marsden Point construction workers took action on safety, and were locked out and eventually fired. Way back when he voted for the most destructive piece of worker legislation in 100 years, the Employment Contracts Act. Way back when in 1996 when he said only NZ First could rid get of National and some of us had a little hope and then he joined a National coalition. And Winston Peters, who stopped Fair Pay Agreements legislation being enacted in the Coalition with Labour in 2017 and from then on voted against it, including in its repeal. And quite recently when he tries to play a hero on contractor rights removal saying the unions should have come to him sooner and said pretty much the same thing about Health & Safety laws. And they are all woke with soft hands by the way.

Judi's avatar

way way back last century making a name for himself with crown cars involved in accidents late at night with female staffers, exposing ferry groundings, wine box inquiry. He'll do anything for attention and he'll back any horse that he thinks will get him votes. He's no better than his mentor Muldoon was in knowing when to pack up and go home.

Darien Fenton's avatar

I'm inclined to make this into a longer piece somewhere; This is only the half of it.

Kim Shaw-Williams's avatar

Hope you do...his many dastardly flip-flops and broken promises are getting a bit hard to remember for me...and I suspect, quite a few others..

Give me woke lanyard wearing lefties anytime over this shitshow of corrupt, mansplaining, tin foil hat wearing, fag hag, environmental destroying, science denying, alternative fact producing, Trump worshipping, anti-worker, baubles of power loving, limo on call bunch of fuckwits.

Jo's avatar

Beautifully written Nick! Can I suggest you consider Russ’s quote cos it’s got me giggling as well as knowing it’s true 😂

Helen Raskin's avatar

Wow. Way to go with the adjectives Russ.

Russ Sewell's avatar

Why, thank you Helen, I do try 😆

Cindy's avatar

🤔 I'm sorry Russ ... can't figure out quite how you feel about these "people" 😜🤣

Russ Sewell's avatar

I could keep going.

Right wing reactionary, porn movie watching, snout in the trough, business class flying, Hobson Pledge racists, history denying lunatics, social media trolling numpties are just a few more descriptions I can give.🙃

Russ Sewell's avatar

Did I not make myself clear enough 🤣

John Draper's avatar

Are you signed up to Jeff Teidrich? I recommend him, the only word you missed to emulate Jeff was fuck.

Russ Sewell's avatar

Hi John, no, thanks for the heads up, I will look him up.

I'm trying not to use the F word as much on Substack but it's pretty fucking hard not to!!

Brilliant. Andrea is spot on. Thankfully someone saying what needs to be said instead Im of the carefully curated slop we see in most media

It is great stuff, I agree Don. Yesterday, my wife and I on pondering who the NZ 1st candidate is in Whangarei, we discovered it was the x mayor Vince, who couldn't get re-elected. He is another stylista waistcoat wearing with perfecto hair style fanatic from the zombie manosphere..............he has played his cards and trying to ride the wave, that will turn into a dumper methinks. Subscription is gonna happen again Nick. Even from a distance, your writing is too good not to read and support. And is as cheap as some of my retail therapy acts on the pension. So I will be in again.

I haven’t seen Andrea’s article yet, but from what you’ve posted she seems to be in good shape and is absolutely on the money.

I coincidentally sent the letter below to the Herald at the same time as your Korero came through. Looks like Laws is the man of the moment. It seems that Winston will scrape the bottom of any barrel to keep his job for another year or two. Surely this election must be his last? The scary thing is that one of those listed today will take the reins. The “F” NZF has a new meaning, (6 letters, ends with “d”). My letter below…

The Law’s on its way

Reading about Michael Law’s desire for becoming Minister of Broadcasting so he could disestablish RNZ, apparently for their left-leaning views comes with a price he might not have considered. If a minister takes such action, surely NewstalkZB, as a distinctly right- leaning entity, should suffer the same fate. As for his work with The Platform, (another covey of right wing supporters),that would have to go as well, as a minister of the crown would need to be focused on the role they’ve been elected to play.

If the fact that Laws considers Winston Peters the only “charismatic” MP, one could almost believe that this whole idea is more satirical jest than a genuine attempt at a political comeback.

Sometimes I get despondent at the state of the world when right wing, greedy, selfish, hateful people have way too much support. Then I read something like this and think maybe it will be ok. Maybe their shameless arrogance will highlight exactly how gross they are. Maybe this entire misogynistic and revolting greed fest will finally implode. Thanks for your mahi, Nick.

Leonie's avatar

Carl Jung said that this time would be a dark time for our planet! It absolutely is crucial that we get out & do the mahi to send these dastardly so called politicians packing!

The world absolutely depends on us and all like minded fighters doing this!

Don’t underestimate how important it is!

Brian Rathbone's avatar

Leonie, I like your attitude and your belief that we need to be actively participating to get out and do the mahi.

Your motivational and inspiring words remind me a little of American writer/speaker, leader and teacher Margaret (Meg) Wheatley who I was lucky to meet at one of her workshops in Wellington on 21 November, 2014.

I’ve invested in several of Meg Wheatley’s books. I offer two quotes from her title ‘So Far From Home - lost and found in our brave new world’ (2012).

“This book contains maps of how we ended up in a world nobody wants - overtaken by greed, self/interest, and oppressive power - the very opposite of what we worked so hard to create. These maps look deeply into the darkness of this time so that we can develop the insight we need to contribute in meaningful ways.”

“We can do our good work with dedication, energy, discipline, and joy by consciously choosing a new role for ourselves, that of warriors for the human spirit.”

www.margaretwheatley.com

Meg’s website includes a Library of Work containing heaps of articles, podcasts, video clips, interviews, poetry and presentations.

I’m happy to say that Meg is an American I admire!

Thank you Leonie, for reading my lengthy note / reply to you. So much work and connecting / networking / building communities of practice to do!

Leonie's avatar

Thank you Brian i have friends who study like material, one is writing a book. They feed me, as well as it being an intuitive sense of mine.

Thanks for your kind words

You’re welcome - there are many of us standing up for what we know and value

Well expressed Stephanie 🙏

Like you, I believe the “entire misogynistic and revolting greed fest” will implode…but not by itself.

In community, and cooperation with one another, we can find answers to this very “greedy and selfish” time.

We can access assets and resourcefulness within our communities if we look for them; when we connect with others doing the mahi; when we realise the additional capacities neighbourhood and community action creates and continues to build.

It requires us to think about the role that we can each play to reestablish a healthier democracy.

(A) At this time, in Aotearoa, Australia, the USA, UK, Europe, and elsewhere, men can choose to call out violent, racist, misogynistic language and behaviours by other men seeking coercive control and power-over tactics. This is critical in turning the dial to disincentivise anyone contemplating following this dark pathway.

(B) In addition, I’m sure you and others remember that through the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to find ways to connect with those who were struggling with more than most.

Please refer to the link to an article from 2020 below. The article asks us important questions that help us to recognise how we can create a recovery framework.

Although in response to Post-COVID-19, the article…from a Canadian organisation called the Tamarack Institute, from their Vibrant Communities resources….offers some insights into how we can find community solutions to emerge stronger and more resilient than ever.

The article titled ‘Asset-Based Community Framework’ is written by Jonathan Massimi (City of Kitchener) and Heather Keam (Tamarack Institute).

https://www.tamarackcommunity.ca/hubfs/Resources/Article/Article%20-%20Asset-Based%20Community%20Recovery%20Framework.pdf

I personally see us needing to do (A), (B), and other actions simultaneously! That’s plenty for each of us to contribute towards 🌞

Leonie's avatar

The important thing is that we do the nahi! Show up, stand up, speak up!

And nurture our inner guidance & resource.

Kia kaha.

Brian Rathbone's avatar

Absolutely. And speaking from my experience as a community worker / mental health worker particularly, looking after our self is so critical and necessary in order to share our gifts and energy with others.

Pauline Arnold's avatar

All I can say about Winston is "Give me strength "to put up with his shit till November so we can get rid of him forever.

Faith Austin's avatar

Love it. Especially your description of The Platform.

Jude's avatar

Great article Nick. Upon hearing that Michael Laws was now going to be the NZF candidate in the Waitaki electorate made me wonder why he has decided to stand now. The cynic in me wonders if it could possibly be that many of the Regional Councils, including the Otago Regional Council of which he is a member, will be disestablished by 2028 in its current form? If that is the case, one can only assume that he will be looking for the next opportunity to inflict his dangerous type of politics more widely.

Peter Findlay's avatar

Good on Andrea. I think Winston First has about reached their popularity ceiling. There are only so many fringe idiots available to them, and many of them will still stick with National and Act.

Jane's avatar

What is it with these attention hungry men?

John Farrell's avatar

Let's really make Winnie's day - vote in a Labour/Greens/TPM majority government, and relegate the old monster and his zombies to the opposition benches!

Kathy Fryer's avatar

Adjusting my lanyard as a proud lefty but thinking about Winston adding Laws, Nash etc to NZfriggingfirst makes me feel ill.
