Good morning John boy, to channel the Waltons. Methinks TVNZ will put JC back in the cupboard very fast…

Nick Rockel's avatar

Indeed, there's no way Luxon is going to put himself through real questioning every Tuesday.

Josephine's avatar

Totally agree. Yet again another journalist needing to be silenced

Sian's avatar

Luckily JC is pretty used to dealing with that, he'll pop up somewhere else unexpected.

Alison Comrie's avatar

Yes a very weak leader indeed. But we need him to stay at the helm so he can be squashed in the next election. Thank goodness for John Campbell still taking it to these idiots.

Janie mcculloch's avatar

Yes he will look like the idiot he is in any debate 🤣🤣

kathleen Murdoch's avatar

thank you so much Nick. that report really lifted my spirit

Nick Rockel's avatar

Definitely needed something a bit more positive after last week. I'm glad.

JC is my hero interviewer across the board, his compassion, knowledge, wisdom, wit and ability to keep questioning rather than being stopped by BS is always a joy to watch / hear.

But today after so long of Luxon’s total crap, I was excited and massively amused and energised for change!

Great summary Nick and so glad I am not the only one stoked to see how easy it is to put the PM back in his fragile egg shell - no offense to chickens

Be thankful you still have at least this semblance of independent media still performing down here Aotearoa. In America, from which I’ve fled, this would be seen a a ‘quaint episode of nostalgia. How things used to be.’

Cindy's avatar

⁉️ 1) this is still "main stream media" as in our public broadcaster, tax payer funded (until this lot have their way & destroy it 👀) 2) even though I live in Aotearoa I frequently tune into US "independent media" such as ex-CNN Jim Acosta, ex-MSNBC Mehdi Hasan, The Bulwark, Meidas Touch, Brian Tyler Cohen, Pod Save America, etc etc - all on Substack or their own YouTube channels. Granted Drumpf will never sit down for an interview like this with them, but there is no excuse for people not knowing what is happening without having to go to much effort. Hell, even noticing hosts on CNN & as always Rachel Maddow & Lawrence O'Donnell on "corporate media" telling it like it is. 🤷

Mark Behnke's avatar

They have no need for excuses.

I don't watch the breakfast show - chewing gum for the mind.

So was pleased to read your analysis and then watch the video you posted.

Aaaaaahhhh....the bloody marvelous John Campbell was at his bloody marvelous best.

I'm in a far happier state of mind for having seen him back in action.

I hope the hopeless Jenni May was watching and learning from the master.

Julie Mac's avatar

shes like lam-o luxxy nothing wrong with me

I never thought I'd type "enjoyed an interview" and "Luxon" in the same sentence but this was a wee miracle for the week as I have and I did ... John was in fine form bless him and Luxon nearly blinked his eyelids off whilst his neck reddened - his body language was much more eloquent than his mouth. The closing minutes and Luxon's lack of an answer - let alone the RIGHT answer! - told you everything you need to know about this disgraceful excuse for a man let alone a PM - he looked confused, pissed off and discombobulated simultaneously ... oh John you've made my day. What a wonderful thing it would be if JC and Jack Tame were to become the media's main interviewers of Luxon and the bizarre co-leaders of the CoC but I know there's no chance of that - the former is probably screaming at his public relations team right now to protect him further from these real journalists!

Excellent summary Nick. JC smashed the interview asking questions on delivery. The increase and escalation in gun violence goes hand in hand with the ruthless austerity cuts forced on everyday hardworking Kiwis as Luxons CG along with Willis pushes society to extremes with high costs of living. Maiki looked completely terrified whilst JC showed a masterclass in journalism.

Josephine's avatar

Kia ora Nick.

God damn I miss JC.

He had Christopher Luxon tied up in all sorts of knots this morning.

What I do wish to know is whether Christopher Luxon has any actual proof that all these gun crimes are being caused by gangs.

CL whole rhetoric of "Smash the gangs" is quite honestly disturbing.

Don't get me wrong, gangs absolutely do cause immense harm in our society and gang members need to face consequences for their actions, but if seems to me that every time gun crime comes up in the kōrero, CL automatically reverts back to gangs.

Hopefully JC is not going to be silenced so he stays on Breakfast, because it seems to me that any other journalist/ interviwer has been well and truly muzzled, and yes, to me that includes Maiki Sherman.

Yes a bloody good interview by John Campbell which left Luxon absolutely flabbergasted. You could see it in his eyes! Another drop in the polls. Thanks John for rooting out his inadequacy. Actions speak louder than words!

Katie O'Donnell's avatar

Thanks Nick...such a great summary of this interview by John Campbell..as you say...a national treasure.

The whole Gang thing is such a red herring, fuelling fear in people...yes, gangs cause a lot of harm in our society, and the events over the weekend are heartbreaking.

But March 15 2019, was caused by an anti-Islamic terrorist who managed to get their hands on an arsenal of semi-automatic weapons...legally. Luxon couldn't say 'No' to the reintroduction of these weapons because he has to wait until Seymour and Peters tell him what the answer is..and with Nicole McKee heading up the re-writing of the Arms Act, we should be afraid...very afraid. She opposed the firearms reform after the 15 March attack. In her Maiden Speech, she said 'The korowai that I wear today was presented to me by COLFO (Council of Licenced Firearms Owners). They have elected me the task of advocating on their behalf, in the manner that I have conducted myself over recent times. The weight of their expectations rests upon me' (from a Jack Tame Q&A interview 17 August 2024). Chilling on a sub-antarctic level.

Absolutely on the money Katie! I’ve just watched the interview and was wondering if Luxo really believes that gangs are the only ones who have and use guns. Apparently, gun club members don’t have bad days which end in tragedy for families and friends, and manic bigots who can buy assault weapons freely aren’t thanking those in Government who make their deluded missions so much easier.

His ramblings about police discovering arsenals in gang pads while searching for patches,(??!), begs the question, why aren’t they searching for guns first, clothing later?

I’m still not convinced, after the last 18 months of Coalition confusion, that Luxo isn’t really an attempt at AI government. He’s very robotic in his manner, has three or four standard replies to any questions and this interview certainly looked like someone with actual intelligence was dialling in the answers Luxon couldn’t formulate in his wonderfully polished head. That was the brightest thing about him during the whole interview. (The bad news is that, having realised what a failure the engineers made with the prototype, they’ve produced AI 2.0, which is always right, is laser focused and will save our country from poverty. I believe it’s been named Simeon). Well done John Campbell, an interview of two halves. Very good on one side, a complete failure on the other.

Just an appreciative gush from me today. Seeing your daily post sitting in my inbox provides an immediate hit of dopamine. My favourite stop on the social media highway. Thanks, Nick.

Thanks, Doug 🙂

🙋 As with others, don't watch "Breakfast" - mainly because I generally don't want to start the day depressed 👀 The positive about TVNZ+ & YouTube (& ThreeNow) is being able to watch later in the event there is something worth fitting into my day, and of course Nick doing the watching for me & giving a summary - THANKS NICK 👍😁 Always appreciated John Campbell and he has never let me down over the years - like all good interviewers he does his research, and adapts his style to the person/subject matter at hand. Not to mention he is genuine & down to earth - doesn't have a big ego getting in the way & making it all about HIM instead of the object of the exercise 🫂 Tossing up whether even watching the pretend-PM 🤮 getting owned is a positive thing to do ⁉️👀

Mac Stevenson's avatar

Let’s hope that John doesn’t get “Keyed” again as he did when he put the heat on John Key. Waiting to see if TVNZ let him interview Luxton again.

Julie Mac's avatar

next year maybe well away from the election

I cried, I cheered and I jumped up and down on the spot. The questions that need to be asked at last! And the complete lack of integrity and intelligence was clear as a bell when the Egg attempted to bs his way out of it as usual. May John Campbell live to take on the rest of the NACTZIS including the Drunkle and the Twerk.

Sian's avatar

I was really pleased to see JC doing the interview, so sick of fireside chitty chats with Jenny May soothing his fragile ego.

Hope we see more of this, much more, in fact every time he opens his mouth, journalists should he pressing hard questions at him.
