I really think we need to reform parliament & have an alternative’ rather than an opposition. I am really so sick of the bullying ways & the jousting in The House. Time to work together absolutely. Great post! Can you send to the PM please.

A lot of insightful korero for us all. I am wondering if Labour had Si on side before the bridge announcement. And will NAct dare say we oppose the second bridge and we will stop this foolish unnecessary investment in motorists

A grand coalition utilising the best from all parties, all working together for the betterment of New Zealand , wouldn't that be something, world beating and inspiring. but alas as you rightly point out we get opposition for the sake of it , combined with our stupid 3 yearly election cycle, it's a wonder that anything actually gets done....

I read a book recently, The Dawn of Humanity ( A new History of Everything), and there was an idea in that I will paraphrase very poorly...essentially, there was a group of people with an elected Chief overall, but this Chief was replaced by one of the other Chiefs every year or three. This basically meant that no law or edict that would be horrible for another tribe would go ahead, because when that tribe's Chief was Chief over all, and had the power to off with heads- the unkindness would be avenged.

So much commonsense from you and Lorraine this morning Nick. Sadly, the concept of working together for the common good escapes many people.

I remember at a management training course about 100 years ago, a scenario put before us about a company with different areas, and different options which could advantage one but disadvantage the other. The option that could uplift all areas was overlooked by most participants who wanted to 'get one over' on the others. I was pleased to be able to see the obvious, that all could benefit by the (to me) obvious choice.

Here's to cooperation!

Existential crisis is as big as it gets, yet still we allow fools like Luxon et al set agendas that just don't

matter.

A reform of MMP which features co-operation rather than opposition?

Actually they do cooperate and help each other in the select committees. It's not all adversarial.

I’m 88 and I’ve seen a few political procrastinations. A few based on cutting a third of political guts and good sense for election years. The right time for doing “the nust does” is always now!! Well really the decade before last. Ow will do

The photograph of the Bridge to Nowhere is very apt. When can we expect compose and cooperate instead of oppose and oppose and oppose? Surely we can work it all out so everyone is a winner!

Totally on point again, Nick.

I can't help but feel - having been zapped back to the 60s and London by your choice of music - that the endless amount of exposure to everything that we have these days, compared to the limited air time/TV time we had previously, has affected practically every level of endeavour humans are involved in.

Another thought while I was reminiscing - the lyrics are really saying "See it my way, because you're wrong" which is not quite what you meant, was it?

and imagine if we went further and abolished the imported westminster adversarial form of parliament and party politics altogether. check this out as an alternative:

lol politicians who dont even get paid! i don't think that we are anywhere ready to consider something like this. but hey our collective imagination could take us anywhere if we enable it.
