Non Newsworthy "stories" - Can't seem to keep the "stories" about the housing market out of my newsfeed. Mainstream press seems to think that we are not a nation of people hanging out to see where and when the latest property deal can be done. For the average person, if they are lucky enough to own their own house, the changing market matters not one iota until they wish to move; and even then all prices will move together.

These so called stories often come across as desperation on behalf of media to keep us wanting to get involved in this merry go round and should be left to real estate's own media. THEY ARE NOT NEWS.

Probably the worse thing about them is they portray rising prices of housing as some great economic strength not a serious inflationary problem like all other price increases seem to be!

Does my head in this infatuation with property that the Media have , yes my home has doubled in value, has my income done the same, not on your Nellie...

First movie I took my partner to I can’t remember however it was in the days when the first half was cartoons and newsreels then an interval to rush out to get ice creams then the movie played second half. Yes, yes I know that dates us both. Wouldn’t John Clarke have so much material currently to base his interviews around. He could produce at least two shows a day just about Luxton.

I remember that, the intermission, either following a short film, cartoons, or for a longer movie, the first hour or so of "the main feature". It made going to the movies more of an event.

Dates me even more Mac as I well remember that first we had to endure the Queen riding onto the big screen on a beautiful chestnut horse - oh I loved that horse - then having to stand for "God Save the Queen" ... good grief!

Yep, those were the days..very old days. After the National Anthem we had Movietone News,( in black and white),before the main feature. Rolling Jaffas down the aisle was mandatory as well. That was in Oz anyway, not sure what happened here. People even applauded at the end which I thought was a bit odd. It’s not like the cast could hear us. Maybe it was that the projectionist stayed awake for the whole event 🤔

Q2. The first movie I saw with Diana was Alien. Best movie ever. She clung to me very tightly all the way home. Happily, she still does😁

Q4. Meghan’s dog. Enough said already on that.

Q9. Luxon, hands down.

Q10. If I was Jacinda I would take Luxon aside and say, “under normal circumstances Chris, the way things are going, I’d suggest you quit while you’re ahead, but in your case, what I would say to you is quit while you’re an arse.”

There may be more to come but this will do for now

Love the answer to #2 🙂 and sound advice, at least while a few people haven't realised he is one.

Thanks Nick, that was 40 something years ago 🙂. For something completely different, I’ve just read that the LA fires have been deliberately lit using “direct energy weapons” to erode humanity and implement “15 minute cities”, doing the social media rounds. The ultimate in modern carelessness, taking fact checking abilities from outlets like X and Mega. Perhaps that should be stupidity. Unbelievable.

So many questions! I started a new one on FB, inspired by you Nick about what jobs have you had (not counting unpaid jobs like mums, or voluntary work). I am up to 28. So far. Some dickhead on X asked me the other day do I ever work? Movies ; yes I was in Bollywood Movies as an extra for pitifully paid work way back when!

Q3: Hubby and I looked at each on hearing that police had waded into protesters in Wellington during Springbok tour, 1981, and decided that we should take part in the protest the following day, a difficult decision for pacifists. We ended up in the front line facing off against the police as we had taken the motorbike into the city and had the necessary protective headgear. Tense time! Proud of hubby as he winked at the female officer opposite him which sent a titter down the line. Never regretted our action.

Movies, Die Hard 3 (loved it she did) Mars Attacks , her choice was Meet Joe Black .., (the only good part in the movie was when Brad Pitt gets hit by the car) , Independance Day, Jurassic Park, Blade Runner (she did not enjoy that) Donnie Darko , No Time to Die (we both had tears in our eyes at the end)

I'm a big Blade Runner fan, one of the best, I reckon.

I took Karen to see it at the Civic in '92 it was the Directors cut special screening , the seats were so uncomfortable that the last 20 minutes was very loooong, not surprised that she associates the film with the sheer discomfort we suffered....

Expand full comment

I confess I fell asleep during the director cut; in my defence, I was very drunk at the time. Yeah, nothing worse than hoping a movie will end. Clearly, she forgave you. 🙂

I was drunk when I watched Ghostbusters (the original) my GF at the time was not impressed....well it was a Friday at the Berkley in Mission Bay

When I saw it in '81 with my friends from school it just blew us away we were entranced from the opening scene.

That marinade sounds fabulous, unlike the Lebanese brick - but did God answer the phone?

New Zealand - now that is a good idea.

We went to the Bullring in Sevilla no fight though which I'm very glad about, learned about the history, it is a deplorable indictment on human cruelty. Jacinda to luxoff 'give up now before being totally eviscerated by the nutters you are in bed with'.

1) Dead man's finger - taught to me by my hero big brother - my two sons loved it when they

were kids :) put your hand against the child's matching hand, get the kid to run their other

thumb and index finger up and down the outside of both matched index fingers - your brain

snaps, 'tis the weirdest feeling!

2) Took my lovely new man to see "Whale Rider" in a flash new cinema in Coffs Harbour, he

hadn't been to the movies for years, I saw him cry watching it and knew right then and there

that he was the man for me ♥

4) Richie McCaw moving house! (and any of Luxon's empty bletherings)

5) Have promised to make a friend an American prairie-style leadlight lamp - more correctly a

copperfoiled lamp - it's been 23 years since I've made a glass lampshade, I'm hoping muscle

memory is a real thing!

6) A simple marinade of beef stock, hot English mustard, malt vinegar and bay leaves - makes

for a gorgeous and complex tasting casserole of cheap blade steak, turns it so tender.

7) Went once, on an invitation and against my intuition - to a mid week prayer meeting of

fundamentalist Christians - Jesus wept!!! pun intended, never again, told a couple of them I

was a Druidess just to get a reaction, they didn't have a clue what I was talking about :/

8) Straya - such a rich resource for silliness.

9) Luxon - no contest there.

10) Find your balls! - answer the question! - listen to the people!

Some great answers, I especially enjoyed #2. And #4 is a great example of a non-newsworthy story.
