I sent a complaint to advertising standards as I was appalled with the nasty inflammatory advertisement which can only be viewed as an attack on a very vulnerable person.
What abominable behaviour by Tui, I can't imagine anybody who was part of this decision has any EQ. Thanks for the great reminder that all of us can complain to the Advertising Standards Authority. Here's the link for anybody else who wants to add their voice against this ad and against adding further trauma for Golriz.
I was absolutely gobsmacked when I saw this circulating on social media yesterday.
I will admit to having a good laugh at some of these Tui ads in the past, but this one wax no laughing matter.
This ad was in bad taste, so much so that I could feel the vile rising up in my throat.
This poor wāhine has been through the ringer already and as you rightly point out, she's not an MP anymore. If Golriz had shoplifted she would have had to have left the shop which she hadn't done.
This ad and other bullying directed at someone who is obviously struggling, to me is absolutely abhorrent and it's actually making mental health issues a laughing matter, which it absolutely is not.
I'm never drinking Tui again, even if it's the only beer available.
Terrific trash of Tui - and they deserve it. Sadly they probably know their market in the same way that Trump knows his. Bad taste could be two of their KPIs. Boycott? Hell yeah!
Who in the current government will stand up for her? Where is our Justice Minister? Our new Ethnic Affairs Minister? Our Minister for Women? Our tough on crime bullies like Seymour and his band of nasties- and Winston? Gloriz is being deliberately persecuted. She has done nothing wrong, has not been charged and even the Supermarket is not pursuing it. But just remember don't take your bags to the supermarket (or weren't we supposed to? to reduce plastic bag waste?)
Having seen the corporate overlords suck up to Tr*mp at the inauguration I'm a bit concerned that our local businesses are celebrating the 'death of woke' and we'll see more of this from those marketing to fairly uncritical audience.
I generally like the Tui ads but this is beneath contempt. I truly find it difficult to understand why this gratuitous targeting of a female refugee who has admitted mental health challenges could ever be seen as funny. She was once an MP but seriously!
Appalling treatment of Golriz I have seen people where i shop putting groceries in their own bag through out the store, I have done it once but certainly won't anymore, find the baskets a bit awkward for a few items so trolley every time now. I note that Golriz has MS which can affect the brain so those who don't have MS have no right to judge.
I find the baskets a pain cos you can't take them outside. So it's my bag everytime, I kinda wish they would call me on it, cos I can talk really loud.
If Golriz is starting a legal fund to sue the arse off all of them, then put me down for $1k
I tried to send this a while ago but it disappeared without any accidental help from me. Yeah, right……anyway.
I sent the letter below to the Herald, hopefully just one amongst thousands, to express my disgust that Cormac van den Hoofdakker finds a continued attack on Golriz, in the guise of a joke to help Kiwis stop taking the world so seriously is acceptable in any way. He has, (including for his immediate future if the DB board has any backbone), achieved the exact opposite.
This is very sort of mockery and abuse that can tip an already abuse weary mind over the edge, after the endless barrage sent Golriz’s way over the last couple of years.
I can almost hear any apology van den Hoofdakker might make. “ I’m really very sorry for any hurt or upset my stupid lack of sensitivity and empathy has caused and I’d like to add that I sincerely give a flying fuck about Golriz’s wellbeing and future”. Yeah right……letter below….
“ Tui isn’t afraid to say what we’ve all been thinking”. Who are “we” Mr van den Hoofdakker? We are mostly those who think Golriz Ghahraman has been going through hell for the last couple of years for making a mistake during a time of mental instability brought about by a number of cretinous individuals trying to destroy not only her career, but her personal life as well. These “good Kiwis” are well known already and this latest Tui billboard has just added another. The least that should happen for this ongoing campaign to break Golriz’s spirit even further is an apology, in person, by Mr van den Hoofdakker, followed by his “retirement” for sanctioning this display of the lowest kind of mockery and abuse. There is nothing at all about this that is apparently going to “help Kiwis to not take life too seriously”. This about as serious as it gets and deserves the most serious consequences for all involved.
As someone wrote - a joke is only funny if everyone thinks it's funny. Exactly, Tui. That was heartless bullying. And yes, where is a government spokesperson supporting Golriz?
Everyone involved in bringing this disgraceful bill board into public view should be fired. It’s completely unacceptable. Poor Golriz, she actually hasn’t done anything, but that little rat squeaked to the press, who leapt with glee and rushed into print without rigorous fact checking (the should be sacked too). I am utterly disgusted.

I’ve had a response that the complaint has been considered for further consideration and I will be notified once a decision is made.

Shame on Tui and shame on Leo Molloy.

Great to hear people are sticking up for a vulnerable person who has been the victim of awful bullying for too long 😢 Thanks Nick
Don't hold back Nick - tell 'em what you really think!! Excellent trashing of a trashy organisation.
A while ago, my partner and I were out for lunch and, when offered this ‘beer’, he said LOUDLY : “I would rather drink my own urine”.
I was mortified then and he was in the dogbox for quite some time but today…he’s been pardoned.
Ha Ha - love it. Buy that bloke a decent beer.
Hey let’s not get too carried away lol

🙋On the contrary, I am DELIBERATELY taking my re-usable bags & filling them with groceries as I go - haven't been stopped so far🤔🤷

It's a big concern to me. Once someone in high places elsewhere starts popping off rather significant salutes, who knows how far that will resound.
I'm not a beer drinker, but I do like a cold cider in the summer. Now I know what brands to avoid. Thanks for the link.
Shared the sentiment and a couple of the graphics Nick. Completely intolerable behavior from DB.

That’s a very good idea. It might help Golriz to know there’s people on her side👍
Also, please complain to the Advertising Standards Authority so the ad can be removed from circulation:

I sent an email to the CEO the other night. It hasn’t bounced back yet so hopefully they’re starting to be flooded with complaints.
Thanks for that, have sent my objection to it.
