I received an email from Jill, who was very polite considering.
She pointed out that she has lived in the electorate for six years and the party didn't stand candidates at the election, so certainly not an interloper.
She also made me aware that Scotty Bright pulled out of the by-election as he has split from Democracy NZ.
Sighhh, what an underwhelming situation. I agree with your opinion on the Animal Rights party though, the one slightly bright light in all the murk. Ironically I had never heard of them till this week when number 2 adult son and I were discussing the coalition of the dammed. He and his mate voted for them in the 2020 election lol despite his socialist father's strict instructions to go Labour. I had also never really heard of Port Waikato which must now be ripe for satire on a par with The Tron and Palmy from the likes of Tom Sainsbury - and your good self of course Nick 😁
Very enlightening Nick, but also depressing from almost any angle - thank you though - otherwise we’d have had no idea how unimpressive the whole situation is.....
Thanks heaps for this Nick. I have shared with my Aunty (lives in the electorate). We were having a discussion about PW candidates and she asked me about Jill O and WRP. Jill was a great advocate for us midwives in her union role and I was so disappointed and sad when I realised she was with this party. (Also a former Midwifery head in there too sadly).
Totally unrelated and trivial (but I can’t stop staring at it) is the candidate Kim’s shoes in the pic - two completely different shoes - it is making my brain hurt!
I can't believe the number of midwives who were anti-vax
conspiracy theorists. I was told that there were eleven of them just in the Coromandel area, and consequently we now have an extreme shortage of midwives. How on earth can medical practitioners not understand the science behind vaccinations? Mind-boggling.
Forced to listen to Newstalk ZB this morning...awful lady laughing at how Chris Hipkins had to be sworn in as PM yesterday...and my man moaning about Winston - I said, really there's no getting our country "back on track", just letting the people actually running the country keep at it :D
Then some bird of the year stuff (which I was largely tuning out to), when the interviewee commented, that this new government wants to cut funding to DoC by at least 6.5% when they already operate at less than the Christchurch Council…silence…and we had better seriously consider what we want to be remembered for, and how we look to the rest of the world when trying to advertise our, Clean, green” status.
I was imagining a scrambling about the place to shut off the crazy lady saying mean things about the saviours of the world :D
I sometimes listen to Newstalk ZB for "research purposes", I can't believe that anyone would listen to it out of choice. Cutting funding to DOC is just so mean spirited and sad. Hang in there Shell 🙂
Depressing stuff for sure. Yes, I encourage people to vote for the Animal Justice Party, if only for the amazing coincidence that if my last name started with P, my initials would be the same! (It's a joke, it's a joke.) I know lots of people in this electorate. I don't know what their plans are!
Thanks Nick, that's interesting. I assume there'll be a low turnout because of no decent candidates and it being a by-election anyway.
I feel like a real idiot but I still don't understand why this ends up with an extra seat in Parliament. Has this ever happened before (outside the usual MMP overhang)?
I don't really understand it either. The best I can work out is it was considered an extra one as they had to maintain the correct proportionality after the election using the regular 120 seats. Mind you at this rate the by election will be done before the next government is signed in anyway. Certainly can't recall it happening before.
off topic, but I was just at Countdown Lynfield and witnessed 2 people complaining to one of the Duty Managers about the video trial that CD are running on the Self service checkouts (SCO's) that how dare they be recorded using the SCO's - what they perhaps forget is that the moment you walk into a store you are on CCTV all the time you are in there.
Hi Nick, no the cameras are looking into the packing area - opposite to the pin pad , they are trying to stop some of the rampant shop lifting . Which is a key driver in the costs of our groceries.
The supermarket where I regularly shop has the pin pad neatly blacked out on the CCTV (or if you are paranoid, at least on the monitor you see!)
What I really object to is that it shows an unflattering view from the top of my head. One that we hardly ever get to see. It reveals maybe I have less hair up there than I'd hoped. Or, as I like to believe in full male delusion mode, perhaps the cameras are broken somehow?
I guess if I could be bothered I’d vote for the Animal Justice Party. But why waste my time in an electorate where they’d vote for anyone or anything that National put in front of them. I suppose at least for a while, when I’m out and about,I won’t have to hear the constant whinging about the awful communists running the country.
A few thoughts on your excellent piece re PW (which I didn’t really know much about either).
Scotty Bright, lol at the inappropriate name, didn’t mention a single policy or statement of belief.
Casey looks to be Māori, which strikes me as weird given her Hobson’s Pledge support but not unheard of.
I was delighted to see Thea giving a mighty side-eye to Alf, while maintaining a cheery smile. Smart girl.
I hadn’t noticed the unmatched shoes because I was distracted by the unknown blokes massive head. I don’t mean to be unkind and he’s physically a large fellow, but, ouch.
What a bunch, our options in Rongatai were less cooked, for the most part.
I was so delighted that Julie Anne won the seat. What an awesome electorate - two thirds of people gave their party vote to either Labour, the Greens or Te Pāti Māori. I don't know much about the electorate but it must be one of the most left wing seats in the country on those numbers.
We had the wonderful Annette King as our MP for years, she is a remarkable woman. It’s actually a diverse electorate with wealth and need in close proximity and includes the Chatham Islands.

Ha Ha - yeah I noticed the shoes too. Guess she was showing she was outside the system, or just a bit laidback.

It really is horrible...though I am surprised they let someone on that was speaking up for nature :D

Thanks for this analysis. What an undesirable collection of possibilities. So glad I don't live in that electorate as it's so disheartening.
Thanks Nick, that's interesting. I assume there'll be a low turnout because of no decent candidates and it being a by-election anyway.

I will say feel slightly better that you don't understand it either.

Yeah, that horse has bolted. Were they perhaps worried about the camera capturing their payment details?

"Look out for Gordon, probably coming to a by-election near you soon." Ahahahahahahahahahahaha! Thanks for the laughs Nick
Thanks, Nick. Animal Rights Party for me. But I don't live there, nor would want to. My sympathies to the iwi of the area. Stolen land what!
A microcosm of NZ outside the cities?
Thanks Nick. On it as always.

Rongotai, duh
If I had a vote, I would definitely vote for the Animal Rights Party.
Me too. Although I hope they don't end up as another 1% party that just wastes votes, like the ALCP.
