I went on my first protest when I was 14. It was against the war in Vietnam. We all sang:

And its 1, 2,3 what are we fighting for?

Don't ask me I don't give a damn,

The next stop is Vietnam,

And its 5, 6,7 open up the pearly gates,

Well there ain't no time to wonder why,

WHOOPEE we're all gonna die.

And it was real; children my age and much younger were being killed and children not much older than me were being conscripted to pull the triggers.

Still we were respectful and gave the policemen flowers. We did not threaten to lynch anybody or eat any babies. We were idealistic and I hope principled. Sadly this unruly mob in Wellington do not appear to be able to lay claim to any such virtues.

Couldn’t agree more having organised and taken part in many protests in my time.
