I do this every time I go to my local Pak'nSave because they only provide glutton-sized trolleys and no baskets. I have never once been questioned about my shopping manner
Exactly. I also shop at Pac&Sav in ChCh and shopping like this is the norm. What's the problem? She didn't leave the store. Obviously not a lot to report on at the moment or perhaps an attempt to deflect attention away from more important issues.
Absolutely Nick. Totally contemptible and yet another 'dead rat on the table'. Security leaks aside why the hell is NZH, Stuff etc reporting it. Journalistic discretion 🙄 And yes Tim Jago! FFS
Whoever has reported this alleged shoplifting needs to be hung out to dry and named and shamed.
This is appalling behavior and the media needs to quite frankly get a grip and focus on more important issues concerning our country, like the Three Headed Taniwha.
Although I don't shop at Pak N Save, I shop at New World, I too, put my shopping in my bag because it's easier than using a shopping cart.
The media need to remember that Golriz is no longer a member of Parliament and that she's innocent till proven guilty.
I was so sad the first time Golriz was in the news for shoplifting; it was so obviously a mental health and stress-related issue and she needed help, not to be torn apart by the media vultures, but this time it's just pathetic media bullshit.
This is exactly why I financially support writers like yourself Nick, because our newspaper journalists are a fucking joke.
Hi Sander. I sent one to Jane like you suggested. Here it is. I hope it works🤞
Dear Ms Skinner
I can find no necessity, excuse or justification for printing the article about Golriz Gharhaman’s alleged shoplifting at Pak n Save, other than it being an egregious and insulting attempt to discredit further a reputation and person who have already suffered more than deserved.
To print this article which by your own admission has no confirmation an offence has been committed, invites serious questions about the ethics and validity of Stuff’s reporting.
You suggest that Golriz is a public figure, so this reporting is “newsworthy”. Neither of these are true. Golriz left the public domain some time ago and is trying to create a normal life for herself. Constantly reminding her of her mistakes, for all to read and relive her unfortunate fall from grace is gutter journalism at its worst. Unless you’ve suffered some degree of mental illness you have no idea of the damage this sort of opportunistic, unfounded reporting can have on someone who has lived being vilified, threatened and disrespected for the last year or two.
Have you never put something in a bag of your own in a supermarket before you go to the checkout to make things easier for yourself? I do it all the time. Have you ever heard that a person is innocent until proven guilty?
I suggest that, given there’s nothing of public interest surrounding this event, you withdraw the article and offer Golriz a full unreserved apology for jumping the gun on something not worth the paper it’s printed on. You do yourself, your product or your profession no favours by doing so.
I wrote to Jane Skinner (thanks for the tip on who to send it to)- She replied quite quickly, which was a surprise. Suffice to say, she defends this sad article. Shameful. I suggested they try better and it's gutter press, clickbait and harassment.
She replied:
Thank you for your email Raewyn.
As you'll appreciate Ms Ghahraman is a public figure, a former Green Party MP, and a former justice spokesperson for the party.
Her previous offending and convictions were widely reported on, which makes this latest incident relevant and newsworthy.
Should we not have been able to confirm her identity or this alleged offending with our sources, we would not have done so.
Given no charges have yet been laid, the alleged offending is not subjudice. The police have, however, confirmed their investigation of this latest case of shoplifting - which we state in our story.
Her ethnicity, gender or wealth are not what is at play here.
Bullshit. Golriz was judged and convicted without having committed any offence. As many can testify we all put goods in what bags we carry before we go to the checkout. Why are we not subjected to the same scrutiny Golriz was? I guess we’re just not tall enough in the poppy field to be considered “newsworthy”.
She left without taking any goods. This from the Herald tonight. No complaint made by the supermarket, but was logged into a system police have access to. Which they tried to inject into her High court case end of last year. Then somehow Leo Molloy gets a tip and brings it to his social, where likely the cretins in the media pick up on it. Just a shit show:
So what exactly were the police supposedly investigating? This whole thing is as you said racist, misogynist bullshit. I would assume the Herald apology will be front page, yea right
Ahhhg - it makes me so angry and sick. Definitely another dead rat and at the expense of a young brown woman, go figure. After reading about the many bills that had early submission dates when everyone was on holiday, it's obvious that the media are falling for the ridiculous 'look over here' or sadly are doing as they are told. After reading Mountain Tuis piece about the 'final atlas puzzle' . It's clear Seymour is intent on his powerplay. https://open.substack.com/pub/mountaintui/p/nz-the-final-atlas-network-puzzle and an interesting read by Henry Cooke about Seymour running rings around Luxon and Willis... I think we need to be careful in dismissing Seymour, he's dangerous with very dangerous friends. https://www.henrycooke.news/p/david-seymours-subtle-powerplay
Sorry, forgot to add - Thank you Nick. Where would we be without your kindness, sense and commitment to getting to the guts of what's going on in our crazy world. Love your work. I look forward to reading your pieces every day!

Well perhaps when I write & add I am cancelling my monthly donation due to this appalling approach to responsible "journalism" something might penetrate 😱 If not at least I won't feel complicit by helping to fund it 🤷🏻♀️
Hi all, based on the response in the first two hours, I've opened this up to all now. You're most welcome to share it with anyone.
So she didn't shoplift? She took goods to the checkout in her own bag? What the #%@* is this all about?
I do this every time I go to my local Pak'nSave because they only provide glutton-sized trolleys and no baskets. I have never once been questioned about my shopping manner
Me too! Love the ‘glutton sized trolley’ comment! If I only want to buy a few things I always use my tote bag and go to the self-checkout.
Exactly. I also shop at Pac&Sav in ChCh and shopping like this is the norm. What's the problem? She didn't leave the store. Obviously not a lot to report on at the moment or perhaps an attempt to deflect attention away from more important issues.
She wasn't even at the checkout yet 🤬
This is bullying. So sad to see this character assassination of Golriz.
I was disgusted to read those articles, leave her alone.
Absolutely Nick. Totally contemptible and yet another 'dead rat on the table'. Security leaks aside why the hell is NZH, Stuff etc reporting it. Journalistic discretion 🙄 And yes Tim Jago! FFS
Jesus wept. This makes me so fucking angry Nick.

Agree absolutely Nick. I can't help feeling the coalition might be behind the media spin on this too. Look! Never trust the Greens.

Guilty of being ‘brownish’ - shame on the media that go with this

There was no crime, except a bullshit beat up of Golriz by Stuff etc.
Could even make a complaint here:

"It is understood she was approached by a staff member who had been watching her on CCTV and asked to leave the shop.
The Post reported Ghahraman’s response was that she was still shopping and wanted to pay for the groceries. She then left."
- Stuff
Thats not shoplifting though. Yet Jane says "The police have, however, confirmed their investigation of this latest case of shoplifting".
Infuriating. So, did they let her leave with unpaid goods? I doubt it.
Yes, that's what it sounds like.

The article in stuff now just says Stuff Reporter interesting.
interesting. I forgot to look at who it was before.
I guess there wasn't any other news that day? No criminals in high places? Oy vey. Well said @Nick
Absolutely agree with all of the above! This is sexual and racial discrimination at its worst!
Well said Nick. And, these media trolls want me to pay for their content ? Don't think so.
I have been so boiling mad since this started that I could not find words! Thank you for finding them for me, Nick. Xx
So what exactly were the police supposedly investigating? This whole thing is as you said racist, misogynist bullshit. I would assume the Herald apology will be front page, yea right
So undeserved. She’s been put through the mill, lost everything. Leave her alone.
