It is not tenable that our Foreign Minister can make racist comments like this which were clearly aimed at Lawrence's origins from China - our largest trading partner. Helen Clark has weighed in, and so has a former Ambassador to China. It is embarrassing and shameful. And today, Peters calling unions Prostitutes for Labour in another rant on Watea. Apparently, unions had the gall to criticise him sometime or other. He particularly hates the PSA. This from a man who pretends to be the friend of the working class, yet just yesterday voted in favour of Brooke's Employment Leave Bill which will have its biggest impact on blue collar, part time, seasonal and casual jobs - not to mention women. Today we get the ridiculous English Language Bill - another waste of time and completely unnecessary designed to appeal to Winston's followers in particular. I worry a lot about that 12% in polls who still say they're going to vote for him. Luxon will stand on by. Yes let's do better. Don't vote for NZ First!
I reckon Winnie the Pooh Winston is finally revealing his truly shallow self, with all its desperate[y aging contours and limitations....he's now making his final political ploy to keep his hand stuck in the honey jar' .paid for by NZ taxpayers...in short just a clever second-rate actor riding the tired old donkey of 'I'm wiser because I'm part indigenous bullshit."
I do feel it’s rather unfair the original Winnie The Pooh’s name is being used to describe Winston Peters, his too despicable to even mention in the same breath as the bear from the one hundred acre wood.
How about Whiney Winston, or Petulant Peters? My personal favourite is wicked old b*****d.
Gerry is another who should have been gone long ago - he was a bully boy in his younger days and now he is an insult to the role of speaker of the house - voters of NZ have the right to expect a professional, informed and intelligent performance from anyone in the role - and that includes a lack of bias and upholding the democratic process.
Winston needs to go - he is proving he is not the appropriate person to be appointed as Minister of Foreign for NZ. IMHO he has inappropriate morals, if he has any at all. His & NZ First's current pollings reveal just how racist many Kiwis are. Polling around 10% is very telling just how many NZ voters are quietly racists, bigots, misogynists and don't believe there is a place in NZ for minorities.
I have come to the conclusion that for the most part most of us want to live amicably together, but there are those who are intentionally creating division to further their ends. amongst these are the "Free speech union" and the "tax payers union". They are pushing the idea of us all being equal - or "neutral". It sounds ok to most of us, but unpick it and you end up with ever increasing inequality as these groups - which support the winner takes all attitude of ACT - keep kidding us there is no moral need to address difference.
I've emailed Winston this morning to tell him how appalled I am at his comments towards Lawrence. I've said I expect better from him as a political leader. I've also asked him to rein Shane in.
I don't expect a response though. I also ccd Lawrence.
Just another thought...also a good idea to forward your email to Winston to your local MP/candidate so they have it too, and can potentially uses it when responding to the likes of WP.
Good on you. I've emailed Winston to, and Gerry Brownlee, reminding him that Chloe Swarbrick was kicked out for calling the Nat MPs 'spineless', and asking him what he's going to do about racist, xenophobic comments directed specifically to another member of the house.
And I emailed Lawrence Xu-Nan too, telling him that I think he's great.
Must confess that I have expresed my disgust and deep concern on his FB page rather than a letter or email, which they seem to ignore/bury. I do the same for Luxon and the Nats when appropriate. I am not just disappointed by this ongoing abuse of their privilege and their platforms, I feel angry that their levels of abuse and racism have ramped up and that it remains uncensored - the behaviour that is walked by is the behaviour that is accepted, and this applies to every member of the coalition who does not call it out strongly and demand that it is addressed.
Peters is 81, 3 years older than me. Some of my contemporaries are showing signs of senile decay, dementia, etc & I recognise the same deterioration in Peters. He's not fit for purpose & will not be around for the next election in 2029 - he'll either be dead or in a care facility. When he's removed from public life, his whole shitty little party will disappear with him - oafish, lazy Shane Jones will never hold NZ first together. Without Peters in charge, the NZF rabble will disintegrate amidst mutual back stabbing, accusations & threats - it will be a joy to behold.
I agree with you Dean. Can't happen fast enough imo. The spluttering, difficulty enunciating, nastiness and aggression are all indicative of advancing dementia.
🤔 I have been saying the same... he has ALWAYS been combative & nasty but it was kind of deliberate & controlled - now it seems the filters are gone which is a classic dementia sign in most cases 🤷
I’m not convinced that Winston is a genuine racist, just a media savvy manipulator who knows how to get headlines and fire up his voting base - but then I can’t decide if that interpretation is worse…
Glorious version of a great song, and I love the introductory banter!
I don't think Winston is a genuine anything. He says whatever he thinks will pull in the most votes at the time. I have found it quite disgusting how he has embraced the anti-vaxxers and conspiracy theorists, when during Covid he was convinced that people should be severely punished if they were not vaccinated. He's a complete charlatan
Im 81. Ive followed Winston in Politics since he started out. He aims to attract racists. Hes has been depending on racism every election period he's been an MP. He's a dyed in the wool racist. Racist to his core.
God, he's a vile despicable disgustingly rude racist bastard isn't he. Any leader of any other political party with even a modicum of integrity should publicly state before the election that they would not form a coalition with peters. End of story.
I'm not sure who or what Winston actually believes these days, but in any case, anyone who spouts such racism and repeats the conspiracy theories he gets from his cooker friends, is NOT fit to be our Minister of Foreign Affairs. I didn't hear his speech yesterday, but I found it in Hansard, and what he said was not befitting for any Minister in any government in Aotearoa. I think Winston is muddled in his thinking, and is out of control, as he appears to be unable to speak clearly these days, and even when written out, his remarks make little sense. He seems to be living in a fantasy world, or pretending to be, in order to convince people to vote for him, and this is not sensible behaviour for anyone in our Parliament. I would advise him to get back to his fishing and dreaming, and he and the whole country will be better off! And he needs to take his party with him!
It's called cognitive decline. In Winston's case it's accelerating cognitive decline. When elderly people in this state lose their previously well controlled filters, cognitive state deteriorates - we recognise this phase in dementia.
I feel quite concerned at the way political discussion is intent on putting people in boxes and lining them up as if in a contest of winners and losers. It is very oppositional, and race bating is part of that play. I want to see more debate in the debating chamber, not taunts and put downs. There are the outright racist rants by the likes of Winston and hs sidekick, Jones, but I am also concerned at the less visible racism which is being promoted by the "free speech union and the "tax payers union". These two organisations which have chosen to call themselves unions but are really niche groups representing right wing ideals, are seeking election or placements on many of our important civic oriented boards. Their members have recently gained places on the professional regulatory bodies of doctors, nurses and teachers. They are currently seeking election to the board of InternetNZ, which is a strategic civic organisation that ensures online safety and offers advice to govt. The Free speech union would prefer any "Maori influence" on that board was eliminated. The "free speech union"'s claims of promoting "neutrality" in NZ comes across to me as being racism by another name.
Racist old coot. His attack on a guy who is as Kiwi as you can get was appalling. Even his own members were embarrassed. Instead of attacking the man for what he was saying, debating him, the old duffer goes down the racist route. How's he going to explain that when next in China as our Foreign Minister.
Winston must be sacked as Foreign Minister. He's repeatedly shown in this term of Parliament that he's not a fit & proper person to hold that mandate for our country. Luxon should get rid of him now before he can do any more damage to our international relations. But Luxon doesn't have the courage or the spine to stand up to him. Neither does Gerry Brownlee who is just a well paid place holder, doing as little as possible before he gets kicked out in November.
Every day we see Trumpian behaviour from Peters. Both are abhorrent. Both tell others to ‘go back to the country they came from’. Both are racists. Both are in cognitive decline. And what I find worst of all is that both get away with their despicable behaviour, never called to account and lack any sense of empathy whatsoever.
This is not the NZ I grew up in when it was a decent society that treated others with respect. However, Winston Peter's disgraceful behaviour relating to Green MP Lawrence Xu-Nan has taken the decent social behaviour expected from our politicians to a new low. This should never be acceptable even under Parliamentary Privilege rules. There seem to be no consequences for Peters and so he continues to act in this way to grab headlines that appeal to his fan base. In contrast Opposition Leader Hipkins believes greater prime-ministerial disciplinary powers over minor parties should be included in all coalition agreements.
I live in hope Nick. The headline in today's The Post provides insight; "100 days to go and all to play for", with a subheading of "as the election looms, voters appear eager to shake things up - just as they did in 2023".
People are pissed off, with both the behaviors and actions of the current Government.
The question is will we mobilize enough to ensure that all are enrolled and do go out and vote?
28.8% of NZ's "normally resident population" were born overseas, according to the last census - and the number has been growing year-on-year for decades. Even those born here might be first generation NZers, or one of their parents was born overseas. How can a Nation that is so built on immigrants put up with this anti-immigrant rhetoric? I get told to go home regularly by social media trolls. We need to say that enough is enough and that racism needs to be stopped immediately here

Yes agree Darien yet 12% of the population think he and his racism and general nastiness are OK.
Yes, and as he vowed never to touch national super, there may be a lot of badly-off, anxious pensioners who vote for NZFirst.
Yes! So where is Gerry Brownlee in all of this .... he's supposed to censure Winston. How pathetic.
Gerry is another who should have been gone long ago - he was a bully boy in his younger days and now he is an insult to the role of speaker of the house - voters of NZ have the right to expect a professional, informed and intelligent performance from anyone in the role - and that includes a lack of bias and upholding the democratic process.
probably a having a nap after eating all the pies
Never going to happen. Gerry Brownlee doesn’t think there’s any issue with what happened.
Winston needs to go - he is proving he is not the appropriate person to be appointed as Minister of Foreign for NZ. IMHO he has inappropriate morals, if he has any at all. I'm sick of this racist and disrespectful crap.
That's a great action, Jeff; I will do the same!
Just another thought...also a good idea to forward your email to Winston to your local MP/candidate so they have it too, and can potentially uses it when responding to the likes of WP.

I am so angry.
Good for you Jeff! I've emailed Brownlee and told him he should be doing his job and not allowing this appalling behaviour

To paraphrase John Key, what I would say to Luxon is grow some nuts.
Should Labour rule out NZF, absolutely, categorically, definitely, irrefutably, without question, 100% yes!
Thanks Nick. Your reports keep me up to date without some of the pain engenderd by some awful people.
BTW Winston is looking his age, I wish he would just go away and drink and smoke somewhere else

Mmmmm if you use the language in any context, you are racist!
These are racist remarks from our FM against the country that is our largest trading partner. Not very media savvy I wouldn't think.
Im 81. Ive followed Winston in Politics since he started out. He aims to attract racists. Hes has been depending on racism every election period he's been an MP. He's a dyed in the wool racist. Racist to his core.

Yes, the signs are definitely there. Winston is rapidly getting older, but not increasing in value.
I feel quite concerned at the way political discussion is intent on putting people in boxes and lining them up as if in a contest of winners and losers.
