I am probably wrong, but I think the shrinking subscriber base says more about the dire financial state more and more NZers find themselves in due to the actions of this coalition government. A bit like how people feel when they get made redundant to increase the dividend to shareholders. You start to question yourself - what did I do wrong, what should I be doing differently. When it is really all about the money and nothing about you and how well/hard you work. I enjoy reading your work and if I can find the time listen to some of the accompanying music clips. For me, I would like to see some of your content include some more investigative reporting of facts that pushback on the misinformation, 1/2 truths and outright lies this government spews out relentlessly. I cannot afford to transition to retirement, so continue to work full-time which allows me to be a paid up subscriber, and find some thoughtful, honest information, interpersed with some humour and blasphemy. I do hope you can continue in 2025 and beyond.
Hey Nick. Just want to tell you that I look forward and appreciate your newsletters every day. Of course you have to live. More and more, I rely on Indy news and comment, as those of us who care enough are all having to with the shake up of the news media and corporate overkill going on. I subscribe to the small number of blogs as I can afford and rely on. Yours is one so thank you for your work. Take a break from the free stuff, give yourself some time with your marvellous whanau over Xmas, but please keep in touch!
Well expressed Darien. Nick your honest warm take on things reminds us of our need for each other and for genuine communication. We look forward to your Korero.
What is happening is by design. The poor have no discretionary spending, are fearful for their jobs and end up supporting family members, so your membership is getting poorer.
Did this government take a pay cut? NO they did not. In fact they invoked every entitlement until they were exposed in their greed.
Try not to take it personally, it is the times. Check with your teenagers for ways to increase funding. Perhaps a sponsor or two.? This government has Business struggling as well, so even that is not easy. Spruiking is an art. The young and fearless do it best. Perhaps a ditty on TikTok? All the best for you and yours, Norm and I are and remain enthusiastic sponsors
Merry Christmas,Nick Fi and family, do what charges your soul xx
Yes, Darrian, we’re all going to miss Nick over the Christmas break! But Nick, we so appreciate you and all of your writing so far. I would be very sad if I thought you were going to quit completely. Please stay on and I will stay as a subscriber For as long as it takes! You well deserve a break over Christmas and some sleeps all night! Have fun with your family. Don’t think about us. The New Year will come and we will deal with it. Depressing though it might seem to be hope you have a wonderful Christmasand come refreshed into 2025. Lots of love for me and my family.
We all need a break. It’s been a hard year seeing so much that was good being undone. It hurts. Which is why I will continue to subscribe, because sometimes it’s your korero that reminds me there’s still a lot of kindness out there and that being mean spirited is not the norm.
Thanks for always being honest and genuine Nick, I so appreciate it.
I hope that you have a wonderful break with your whanau and friends.
As for writing you’re awesome but money is becoming an increasing struggle. But we will overcome!
My wish for you and yours, and this newsletter ‘whanau’ is that the New Year will bring new energy, new money, new hope, peace, compassion for all, and a new Government 💜
Firstly Nick, thank you so much for your words and work. You are my first read most mornings with my first coffee. ❤️ I think many of us relate to having a passion for a craft...but not loving the need to market and sell that work. And now, yes, it's harder still.
Hopefully subscribers will return... taking a pause, rather than a stop.
I just wanted to say that your writing always feels true/real to me. Your passion in your beliefs and ideals, you really are a great kiwi bloke. Additional.big ups for the humour, the song lyrics, the videos of lesser known artists. Great stuff. 🎶 🎵
Have a wonderful Christmas break with your loved ones. Relax, refresh. We will be here.
🤔❤️🙋Firstly, thanks for the great video ❤️ All those folks warmed my wee heart 💚 2nd, don't take the unsubscribed personally - with all the govt cutbacks & layoffs & being an expensive time of year, people just have to be ruthless about their outgoings. I can't imagine anyone who followed you in the 1st place would be offended or surprised or outraged by your writings ⁉️
I did it myself a few months ago when I had an unexpected rise in monthly outgoings which co-incided with the US election disaster so I cut all my US news blogs & switched to just important Aotearoa voices (& even then I can't afford them all 😥)
I CHOSE to up yours to annual as I appreciate it so much as a safe space for both serious & fun intelligent korero with ❤️ - I had no idea who YOU were, but other writers referred to your articles so I checked it out and joyfully checked in 🫂 then stayed 🏡
Hope you and yours have a good Christmas...🎄🧑🎄🎅🤶⛪🎄
It is sneaking up fast & my dysfunctional extended family don't yet have plans as they figure out who where & what (being as we already have the WHY 😂) but I have personal plans with the person I spend every Christmas with if I am not out of the area for work, so 😜👍❤️ & let us all make 2025 as good as it can be in what we can control & affect 👏
Nick do not give up. More than anything we need people like you to do the searching for truth. This group of right wing trolls employ people to write nonsense about the likes of you. LOOK at the recent doings: Black Rock purchased a major producer of our solar power system and after two years has shut it down. Citing financial losses Rubbish!!! A planned destruction!!!! Have a good holiday and come back charged up!!! I am not sure when my subscription is due..but I am a supporter
Best damn Xmas song ever! No pressure to write on demand every day. In reality bad news all the time is a turn off BUT we need people like you and others to share the load in keeping the wider public aware of the BS and lies ... Will support you with my subscription until my proposed disestablishment is finalised with Health NZ and then review. For so many of us, 'getting NZ back on track' is a death knoll for the hard work we have put in over the years working to support our whānau and community.
My advice for 2025, pick your lane and do it well. Success isn't about numbers ❤️🐻
Take as much time as you need. A daily newsletter is lovely but not at the expense of your health. I haven't been a regular reader this last few months - just too much on - so I can't imagine the pressure writing as frequently as you do. Thank you, stay sane and seasons greetings.
We're sticking with you mate! Thankyou for the enlightening & true to the core newsletters you work so damn hard getting out to us all.
Sorry it's getting to be a hard slog getting &/or keeping the subscriptions you need to continue doing what you do so well.
The tightening of everyone's belts is getting harder each day thanks a LOT to the pack of CoCs & after seeing yet another extra tax not tax ACC levy rise I can only imagine even more juggling of the diminishing finances.
Of course not if you're one of the privileged pricks in charge of these latest 'let's find another way of paying for those tax cuts, Tobacco & Landlord profits.
Have a fabulous few weeks of your lighter writing load doing whatever brings you joy (with some bathroom reno finishing touches thrown in) hopefully spending time with loved ones & enjoy the Christmas roast if you have one.
But whatever you do DON'T PUT FUCKEN TOMATO SAUCE in the gravy!! WTAF??
I just asked Bob is that an Aussie thing? Because it sure as hell isn't ever going into our gravy 🤣😆
Merry Christmas Nick & Fi & all the very best for the new year.
It's been a big year and thank you for helping make sense of it. Along with 'financially' doing it tough many are mentally doing it tough and at this busy family time switching off from the daily wtf's from coc. Brains hitting the fusing point and needing to switch out for a bit. I have no idea when my subscription ends and wonder if some of these are messages are that. Anyway take care
I often read your posts and think, you’ve read my mind. I’m pretty new to Substack, and only found out about it when Bryan Bruce switched to it from Facebook.
What I wanted to say, has been sad by everyone above. So I’ll just reiterate… have a relaxing break, and recharge your batteries.
Don’t over-analyze the Hobsons post with unsubscribing. You have a loyal group of followers, and other writers are having the same problem with subscriptions.
There are SO many fantastic contributors on Substack, and unfortunately I have limited funds to only support a few. Like most of us, I’d imagine.
If I have deemed you good enough to support, then you must be at the top of the list of good ones! 😂
I am so sorry that people are unsubscribing.. I guess times are hard but I am surprised to find that your subscribers include people who also support Hobson's Pledge. I'm in shock.

Done, thats one less beer per week, beneficial for both you and I Nick
Love that.

Nick, you are facing a competitive environment, as well as a tight fiscal one. I support 6 writers but get asked daily to subscribe to many more.
Keep up the good work, choose to believe in yourself, and your abundance, look forward to hearing your dissections of Hobson’s Pledge.
