She is impressive and formidable and I hope she gets in.

I like her immensely. Been following her for some time now and think she will be an excellent MP.

She cares, she thinks, and she conveys her thoughts and ideas well. And she has integrity that is sadly lacking amongst the current mob of government mps.

That is what people are looking for now, in this world of AI fakes and unoriginal thought. Genuine people who care about the community as a whole, not just how to line their own back pockets.

Wasn’t she incredible? I follow her on social media but today was the first interview I’ve seen.

Additional to your comments Nick, I want to add she was aware and spoke respectfully to Te Ao Māori and Pakeha experiences. While being grounded in the actual constitutional challenges Aotearoa has had and how we need to come back to our foundations.

Her humility and humbleness within her acknowledging her role and expectations as opposed to choice to stand, sung of her mana and commitment

Inspired 😃

I have been very impressed with Tania as I have followed many of her posts. If I was in her electorate she would get my vote.

Am I glad she is running for my Party - I hope she gets in alongside other new faces like Craig Renney and Dr Gary Payinda for Labour - I am really glad to see impressive people, with decades of relevant experience in their fields that will be a real asset to Parliament, stepping up and getting involved in politics. Economics, The Law, and Health are covered so now we need someone with deep knowledge of education - who else can we rope in at this late stage, or work on for next time?

thanks again, Nick, for doing the heavy lifting for the likes of me. I think Tania is a classy lady and I hope that Parliament will not diminish her aura.

When the government tries to overwrite Te Tiriti with their own ideological agenda,t hen they expect the public to just except that. Instead, people are doing their thinking. They’re looking at the original contract and realizing it’s the very thing that secures the trust for everyone, not just a select few.

The government is trying to use the Treaty as a wedge to create a fracture in our society, but like Tania said, it’s actually acting as a catalyst for people to find the truth together. Im already there from ages ago, just waiting for others to stand up.

.ko te Kuini e whakaae ana e whakamana ana ki nga Rangatira ki nga hapu ki nga tangata katoa o Nu Tirani te tino rangatiratanga o o ratou wenua o ratou kainga me o ratou taonga katoa.

Not a direct translation but It says that the people have the right to maintain their own life without outside interference trying to overwrite them.

"...the unqualified exercise of their chieftainship over their lands, villages and all their treasures."

Thanks Nick...I couldn't access TVNZ on demand...which I think has been an issue for many people, so glad I could watch it on your post. Tania Waikato is a force to be reckoned with and I cannot wait for her to take her seat in parliament. She is forthright, honest, articulate, passionate, has a full appreciation of the issues. I think she's great...the mum and grandmum in me is a bit afraid for her...another smart wāhine Māori..what awfulness will be unleashed onto her by these scum? She does have so much support (as had others)...but even then we have seen the depths NACT will go to attempt to discredit, slur, and destroy wāhine of her calibre (or any wāhine who threatens their egos, and challenges their assumption of power) . And it is wonderful to see the fantastic candidates coming forward for Labour and the Greens. Roll on November! Kia kaha koutou!

She was brilliant as I knew she would be- look out coalition- you’re in for the ride of your lives!

Darien Fenton's avatar

This won’t be a popular view. And I am probably opening myself up here. I know Tania is brilliant, and articulate and passionate and all the things. She will be a serious challenge in Te Wairariki. But I felt there was a lot of talk about “I” and “my” but not a lot about “we”. Being a politician isn’t about your personal brilliance, but how you do the hard yards with the people on the ground including those who come to you with all the nightmares to be fixed you can imagine. It’s not about making brilliant speeches in parliament either - its about working to a program as a Green MP you won’t always agree with, or having to find compromises to get a little and sometimes big wins. I look forward to hearing about more about her mahi for the "we".

I don't doubt that she will work hard for all people, and be a team player with other Green, Labour and TPM MPs. I didn't watch the interview but I expect questions were very much framed on why are YOU running and what will YOU do if elected - so very easy to respond in the first person - and this is a sort of "job interview" live on National TV and as with all job interviews you get told so say what YOU did and what YOU will do and avoid the Us/We - a tightrope to walk - but always judge people by their actions not their words

She will demonstrate her collegiality by what she does when she gets elected - whether this time or next time - she is a force to be reckoned with - and as a lawyer/litigator will really help new legislation to be made properly through the Select Committee process so it works, and not rushed through under Urgency and without public scrutiny like we have seen too much of this term

Thanks. I have no issue with her being elected. I think she is a brilliant pick for the Greens. And yes, as you say, it was one interview. It was just my heart reaction.

I agree with you about the “live job interview”, Martin and also with Darien, to a degree that once elected there’s a lot more “we” than “I” which comes into play. I didn’t know a lot about Tania before I watched this interview but I thought she did a great job of making her skills and virtues known to people like me with the time she had, and I was very impressed with what I saw. To be deemed worthy of one’s part of the “we”, I’m sure we all need to know what we can about the “I”. One thing that impressed me greatly was not hearing one “um”,”er” or “I don’t have this or that information at the moment”. I think Tania will be a force to be reckoned with when the “we” get up and running properly.

Anne L's avatar

Yes, I agree with Martin too. It was almost as if the interviewer was framing his questions so that she could accentuate her personal qualifications and experience. I can just imagine the negative reaction she gets from some pakeha (mostly male) who automatically assume she's not up to the job because she is a Mowree - as in cow.

I've followed her for quite some time in various forums, including interviews, and I don't doubt for 1 minute that she's a team player and a 'we' person, she's demonstrated that time and again. The nature/structure of the questions perhaps led to the use of the personal more heavily. Love the woman's capabilities and the mahi that she's been doing as a public service in recent years.

Darien Fenton's avatar

Yes so something to look out for in future interviews because no doubt there will be more. I know it was just one interview and this is just one reaction.

Jeremy Coleman's avatar

The sooner the “I” becomes the “We”, the better. For the moment I suggest “we”, as Korero commentators, can probably say we are all somewhat right. That’s what “I” reckon. At least until the next interview🙂

Kate Hunt's avatar

Ahhhhh thank you Darien! I have followed Tania on social media and she is impressive. But when I heard she was standing for the Greens my reaction

was caution: can she be a team player? The Greens don’t need another selection debacle. The vultures will feast on any opportunity.

We have a new articulate, intelligent bili gual future leader on the horizon that reflects modern Aotearoa and what a positive force for our young people.

Ken Chernoff's avatar

Thank you for that Nick ... I'd never heard the name (I stay away from mainstream media) and am the better for having read this kōrero. This is why I support your work. Keep kickin', bro!

Cheryl McConnell's avatar

We need candidates of this calibre as MPs. She's impressive.

Keith Levy's avatar

I like Tania Waikato already already...

Kim Shaw-Williams's avatar

A truly great and timely Sunday Korero, Nick...thanks for giving us all a ray of hope...I for one do not watch TV or listen to radio news anymore...probably because I am a Canadian/Welsh pakeha immigrant, had not heard of Tania Waikato...but now I hope she is Aotearoa's PM one day!
