Hi Nick. I’d like to encourage you to put out five newsletters Max per week. I really don’t know how you do six. Please. Give yourself a four or five day week of well-researched wise words. What do others think? Most of us subscribe to a number of good NZ, UK, US thinkers.
We desperately need a break in our inboxes too. A break from the woes of the world and stark evidence of New Zealand politicians’ ignorance and stupidity.
So in conclusion. 4-5 newsletters a week would do for me.
That seems to be a good solution all round. As previously mentioned Monday is a good one given that not a lot happens in terms of political news. The other one perhaps a Friday or Saturday? See how we go.
Nick Do what you need to do to have the strength and humour to poke the borax.
We are struggling to cope with them on many levels, but don't over work to where you lose your health and humour. I hope people are rallying to support you through this patch All the best to you and yours Trish and Norm.
Note the instructions above have now been updated. Please be aware that where I had assumed that when upgrading an account the difference would be charged it appears a full year may be charged, less whatever remaining subscription you have. I tried this out myself just now, upgrading my sub to David Slack’s fine newsletter and can confirm I was charged for the full year minus about a month worth as my sub wasn’t due until next month.
So just to confirm you won’t end up with two accounts, unless you set up a separate one with a different email address, you won’t retrospectively pay at the higher rate, but Substack does charge for the year up front, discounted as I say for what you’ve already paid for. My sincerest apologies for any confusion or inconvenience caused. On the bright side those folks are now all fully paid up until October 2025.
Some better instructions, if you want to check your account details or change your subscription type please click here: https://nickrockel.substack.com/account
If anyone has any difficulty or is unclear on payments please contact me, the last thing I want is to cause anyone any stress as you’re trying to help.
The Israeli Lives headline wasn’t stupid, it was a lovely humanitarian gesture to help keep things in perspective, and Israel, the state, needs to be condemned in the harshest possible terms on a very regular basis. It’s a shame about the subscriptions, we do what we can (by paying for two subscriptions so we both get your newsletters rather than just sharing the one, but times are tough, we have a small extra income over our super and a freehold home (those were the days, eh? Our kids and grandkids are being ripped off) and that’s the only way we can afford to pay for a few of the subscriptions we read. Good luck with the scans.
You just keep doing you Nick. Please don't try to 'please'. I didn't totally agree but the kaupapa of your Israeli Lives was thoughtful and considered. I think it's a good thing to at least loom through different lenses. We don't want to be an echo chamber and I'm sorry some people reacted that way, they're really doing the most, cut, face thing sadly. Kia kaha!
I can relate, Nick. I've had ultrasounds, CAT scans, PET scans and XRays. Tissues biopsies and especially bone marrow biopsies are unpleasant, too. I hope your tests are negative, and your future is positive!
Good luck with the scan today Nick. A totally unrelated comment to this korero is regarding an interview of Tama Potaka, by Julian Wilcox. It was aired on The Hui on 1st October. Potaka refused to answer most of Julians' questions and came across as a prat, blaming the last Govt and being so low on the pay grade scale in his own party that he was helpless. It's well worth seeing.
I agree with those who suggested five newsletters per week, give yourself a break.
Returning to a suggestion I have made before, why not provide an option for a donation so that one could lob in an extra few dollars in addition to the sub? Just add an extra ‘donate’ button. Sometimes there’s a bit left in the pot and I’d like to point it your way because you provide us with consistently good content.
That's a good point. I think I'll provide an account for those who want to "buy a cup of coffee", or such as a thanks but not want to commit to an ongoing payment.
Hope it's nothing serious Nick. You take time for yourself today. I will have another look at sub and see if we can stretch for a little bit more. You know, blogs like yours and a few others make our day in this mad, mad world. A little bit of sanity every day.

I’m feeling pretty overloaded.
All the best today.

Thank you Trish and Norm 🙂
Yeah, take a break...your newsletters are fantastic and if I got two a week, I'd be thinking that was very good value for money :-)
I agree..
Yes I support that
I agree too.
Tautoko!
I also often marvel at how you manage to put out 6 newsletters a week. 4-5 and a work life balanced author is fine by me - if it suits you Nick.
I think thats fair too

Hope all goes well, love your work Nick.
As for criticism of Israel , damn right, what they are doing needs to be criticised!
Damn right the hippocracy is mind blowing
And I further agree.

Well said. I agree.
And lol that's 'nose' not 'most' 🙄
Trust all goes well Nick. Always so glad to have found your posts and to share your points of view.
Go well with the scan today!
Don’t worry about differences of opinion on your work, it’s healthy and just might change a readers fixed view on topic(s).
Yep, very few change their mind at the time of the debate - it's usually in the middle of the night...

Thanks for the heads up. Potaka does seem quite spineless.
Good luck Nick🙏🏽 happy to keep my sub😉👍 You provide a great insight into events in a very human way❤️

Good luck today Nick! And five newsletters a week would be great!!🌟

All the best Nick for both the scan & keeping/increasing your subscribers.
Happy to pay the increased sub when it's time for renewal you do a great job!
Safe and healthy vibes coming your way!
