What’s laughable is how the right wing trogladytes think our media is “left wing” and biased in favour of Labour/Greens/TPM. That's why Seymour, Goldsmith, Winston et al are able to get away with playing to an audience who believe every bit of everything they (and Hosking, Plunket, Heather DA et al) say. I didn't like Maiki's commentary sometimes either, but a lot of her performance over the last year now makes sense with this hanging over her. Then you have our PM refusing to turn up to TVNZ Breakfast or Q & A - I mean refusing to turn up to our State owned TV network? What the actual? Or Seymour threatening our State owned radio RNZ with changing the Board and criticising John Campbell, which is well outside of his lane. This is dangerous stuff.
In Luxo’s case Darien, he’s refusing to turn up to work. It’s his job to keep the citizens of AotearoaNZ up with the play, whether he likes it or not. None of us get the privilege of picking and choosing who we talk to or answer to. Even after all this time he’s been the alleged leader of our nation, he’s still in CEO fantasy world. It’s hardly surprising that his lackeys are seemingly getting as sick of him as the rest of us are. The sooner he goes the better off we will be. The only part we daren’t think about is who will take over.
As for Maiki, my first thought is that she imagined she could get away with some sense of liberty in her approach to the game she was playing. My second thought was that she showed a degree of naïveté about how this “government”, works. Trumpism rules the roost. If you play by their rules you’re going to get on. If you don’t, you’re going down with your luck run out. Either way, Maiki did the only decent thing she could and retired from the game under her own volition. I wish her well for her future.
We should probably backdate it as well. He hasn’t, as far as I can see, earned a single dollar during his tenure. We could probably ask him to pay back all his travel expenses,(as well as those for Amanda).
We could make up a bill. Once when I was an MP and National was in power we put together a redundancy notice and marched up to the 9th floor to present it to the PM and Kate Wilkinson. After that, they stopped access for non government MPs!
I remember the PM at the time had one great skill. He managed to make himself redundant from Merrill-Lynch, Air New Zealand and National, all before they collapsed, (except for Air NZ which had to be bailed out before it did). The fact that he, to some degree at least, has mentored Luxo, and thinks Trump is a great guy, all following on from his own failures speaks volumes about why our country is in the disarray it is now.
They are really showing their true colours now, eh...lets just hope what GB SHaw said about NZ in the 1930's ("Far, far, far too many sheep!") does not turn out to be true...
Most of the sheep seem to have left, Kim. Maybe they are more clever than we thought. We got left with the bulls and the shit that comes with them. I’m sure GBS could write a much more interesting, informative and amusing script than the one we have now🙂
Thank you Nick - in the political desert (a Coalition Government that is out of control) we are currently experiencing, your column is a breath of fresh air and sanity restoring my faith in clear-eyed assessment of what is going on!
We absolutely have to ensure that the Coalition is not re-elected - the current damage will be kindergarten compared to their plan to turn New Zealand into a feudal society by making changes at will without any consultation whatsoever.
The ultimate goal is to follow the United States and make New Zealand into a feudal society for wealthy white men to rule.
If you have any doubts about our following the Trump playbook check out this post from Chris Hedges and substitute local names. "America’s Suicide Pact"
I will never forgive Maiki for the vindictive destruction she wrought on leftish politicians, particularly brown and/or female ones. But like many of your readers I am incredibly angry at the way she has been taken down by the partisan management of our state broadcaster
Her doing that is a real head scratcher for me given her strong connections to Te Ao Maori as a graduate of Te Kōhanga Reo and Kura Kaupapa Māori Aho Matua. Maiki is the name of the hill in Russell where Hone Heke chopped down the British flagpole four times and that is where her name is from. She was interviewed by etangata in 2016 and had this to say "Now that I’m working in the mainstream media, there are different challenges as a Māori journalist because of the need to navigate the expectations of your people and the expectations of your producers. And they can be quite different. So it can be a balancing act." Did the balance tip too much one way?
As I posted on your post regarding the resignation of Maiki Sherman yesterday, I wasn't always a fan of Maiki Sherman and her reporting, but the way Maiki has been treated over the last couple of weeks has been appalling.
Whether this has all come about because of the Stuart Smith shit, (which the little weasle Simeon Brown had a sook about? or whether it's regarding the incident that happened a year ago, there were other journalists involved in both cases and none of them have had the same scutiny or pressure put on them.
This is most definitely Dirty Politics here and I can't help but feel this is yet again another attack on a strong wāhine Māori.
So Nicola has been at the feet of the mistress of dirty tricks learning everything Judith can teach her. Ani to Nicola what Cam was to Judith. Shall we continue to press Lloyd Burr for his contribution which caused the unfortunate response from Maiki? It's hard to believe how low this govt has and will continue to sink as it attempts to dismantle our democracy.
Disestablishing the BSA six months out from the election - how very convenient for the CoC. Now wait for more dirty, dirty politics. One term govt. NZ deserves better.
There is something rotten in this land and now it's out in the open and its ugly, frightening and damaging. I saw Maiki probably at her best as part of the press following Jacinda Ardern at the Otago Uni and she looked impressive but hardly a threat to anyone.
We have too few journalists that use the old guidelines & get different sides of a story & don’t colour the article with their own opinions. Dr Gavin Ellis’s open letter to the PM on the BSA was excellent. Disinformation is rife & we must combat it in every way we can. Supporting good journalism is part of that.
Definition of Democracy = a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives:
Definition of Dictatorship = Dictators usually resort to force or fraud to gain despotic political power, which they maintain through the use of intimidation.
Yes. I'm pretty incensed about this. I also found Sherman's style combative sometimes, but she applied it to all political parties and politicians without fear or favour.
Of course you are right Nick. The events you mentioned are linked to the Sherman sacking, because that is what has effectively happened. It is diversion politics... to steer voters away from the total lack of competence we are seeing, particularly from the prime minister.
There is another story which broke in the NZ Herald yesterday, which should be getting more public attention. I refer to the interview with the former Police Assistant Commissioner, Tania Kura. I suspected there was more to the story about her departure along with one or two other police personnel. It struck me at the time that Police Commissioner, Richard Chambers and Police Minister, Mark Mitchell were being unduly scathing towards them when the story first came to light and before any official investigation had occurred.
It was a politically motivated stitch-up job designed to make scapegoats out of them and also lay the blame on the former Labour government. As an ex-public servant, I've seen it all before.
Indeed, it was difficult at the time not to see what Tania Kura was seeing
"Kura believes Chambers and Mitchell exploited the IPCA report and subsequent media coverage to cultivate an image of moral superiority while trashing the old guard"
The ‘Dirty Politics Brigade’ are emerging, no doubt for me, they are all in collusion. I estimate there will be some conspired revelation every week up until the election. Someone? has had the job of putting the war plan in action.
They emerged months ago with Simple Simeon's release of the latest covid response report, accompanied by his venomous spewing misinformation and his own skewed version of the findings in the house on that day. His lies and misinformation were subsequently repeated by a number of his Nats colleagues on their social media posts - Pandit has continued to escalate from there.
Good idea, but the problem with such media is that algorithms sort us into silos unless we actively seek out views we don't agree with. So the folk who "should" read any article may never be confronted by it whilst their opinions are reinforced even more so by what is sent their way.
I agree with you and at the same time, I find Substack offers the opportunity to engage in and with a different community. It’s nothing like FB.
In Maiki’s case she may not be ready to launch as an independent journalist (if I were her I would be pretty angry right now). However, if you are a passionate, professional journalist then Substack is your chance to do what you do without the corporate, biased BS.
"Self-regulation" is a convenient and utterly bullshit phrase for masking open slather from the right wing! ... ye Gods we are beginning to resemble 'Merika more and more every week with corrupted politics enabled by a weak, gormless and gutless leader who arrogantly thinks he's unanswerable to any journalist like Tova, Jack and Moana who asks questions New Zealanders want answered- I wonder when they and the likes of Jenna Lynch will be muted? ....
Every day in every way, the Labour/Green Fixit List gets longer and longer. So much work for them to repair the CoC 's damage to Aotearoa.

Yeah we should dock Luxo's pay. And get a refund for his expensive media training.
We should probably backdate it as well. He hasn’t, as far as I can see, earned a single dollar during his tenure. We could probably ask him to pay back all his travel expenses,(as well as those for Amanda).

Yep, that’s the way it works. Bastards!

Āta mārie Nick and Nick's Kōrero whānau.

Kia kaha Maiki.
Have a great day Nick.
Agree 100%. I wasn't a fan but I'm shocked by the whole sorry saga.
"...there were other journalists involved in both cases and none of them have had the same scrutiny or pressure put on them." (amended typo :) )
They probably were not Maori.
So Nicola has been at the feet of the mistress of dirty tricks learning everything Judith can teach her. Ani to Nicola what Cam was to Judith. Hopefully Linda Clark can force Lloyd Burr to state his side.

Any question about NZ?
We are on a very slippery slope on the way down.
Yes. I'm pretty incensed about this. I also found Sherman's style combative sometimes, but she applied it to all political parties and politicians without fear or favour.

Shame it is behind a paywall.

Yes so true.
Do you think she would come to Substack?
I would welcome that - it is a great platform where we can disagree and debate it out.
May none of the content creators or subscribers abuse of that.

Now that Maiki’s of a job, would it be ok to ask her out on a date ?
😁😜

Interesting that the other journalist involved in this mess has got off scot-free.
Yes. Why isnt anyone hounding him?
