I don't want, in any way to trivialize the tragedy of the policewomans loss of life.

But, I do wish we gave just as much publicity to other workplace (on duty) deaths.

For the last decade we've averaged 72 workplace deaths per year, that doesn't include work related illnesses (asbestosis, cancers etc) or people driving for work.

That's over one person per week doesn't come home from work

An excellent point John - a national disgrace!!

Yep, twice the rate per capita of aus, sans snakes and crocs.

And, the current RSB being introduced will exacerbate the problem

The next couple of weeks will be busy ; Both Labour and National have their caucus retreats which are about planning. Chris-topher is apparently making a "state of the nation" type speech next week. Parliament is back on 28th January and before that will be the Ratana Hui, which should be interesting. Meanwhile there are still submissions to be done before the end of Jan you good people. Watch out for the two employment law ones ; one is good and a Labour members' bill on wage transparency and the other is from the horrid Brooke van Velden which is her anti strike bill. We need to support the first and strongly oppose the second!

Hi Darien, What are the names of these Bills? There are many in the list on the Parliament website but I am not sure what to look for.

Employment Relations (Employee Renumeration Disclosure) Amendment Bill - due 23 January. (Labour Member Bill)

Employment Relations (Pay Deductions for Partial Strikes) Amendment Bill - due 30 January (Brooke van Velden's government Bill.

"Such a Parcel of Rogues in a Nation" ... this powerful old song started up in my head when reading your post just now Nick "we were bought and sold for Atlas gold, such a parcel of rogues in a nation" ... apologies to Robbie Burns for changing the proper noun and also to the parties on the Left. Further on, reading that Luxon is rushing back to go to the funeral of Sr. Sergeant Lyn Fleming feels really distasteful to me, not at all respectful, just another cringe worthy photo opportunity from this most hollow of men!

Expand full comment

Why would the family of this policewoman, who it seems has served her community well for a long time, want Luxon (who has not yet contacted them) to come to the funeral. Out of resepect for their planning the least that should happen is that family are informed.

If it was my family I'd have banned him Heather! If Luxon is so hungry for photo ops he should have the guts to go to Waitangi as there'd be lots of coverage of his loathsome carcass there!

Well said.

Too right Vicky!!

Agree. There is absolutely no way in hell that I would want Luxon and his hangers on looking for photo ops at my funeral.

“That was then this is now.” Can almost guarantee Luxton and National will support the Treaty Principle Bill. With Seymour’s other Atlas take over Bill it’s interesting that he opposed unelected Māori being on Three Waters entities yet now promotes an unelected panel being responsible for legislation etc that favours his Atlas donors. The sun though helps to keep the spirits up.

good point Mac. i have been on holiday reading some Taranaki history. wasn't a lot of equality there, or back then, and that has trickled down with land still leased in perpetuity and not accessible to the real owners. ACT don't seem to give a rats bottom bout that equality or treatment, nor Brash and the Sledge, nor Batchelor and Christ's followers who eat his words, him and who are voices in the community drumming up support, misinformation and division around this.

Is it private ownership that is elevated, or money and who has it by this libertarian agenda. This word equality in the drive for support by ACT baffles me. History won't matter it seems........I hope it blows up in their faces.....and yeah, I don't trust Luxon or Nats to not support........we are in the grip of some huge shift.................and I feel powerless to stop it. HTF did good ole NZ get here. Brings a whole new meaning to asleep at the wheel eh.....

Luxon doesn’t really need to support the TPB, the Regulatory Standards Bill will enable the Treaty to be ignored completely, which is probably why the RSB has been quietly slithering along in the shadow of the TPB. I wonder what else is lurking in the Select Committee inbox?

I spoke with a woman running a vape shop who said they would be closing soon. Apparently the 'funded free vapes' are all to come from one tobacco company. Guess they are the friends of NZF. She also said that there are extra rules and that shops will no longer be able to advise people on types of vapes strengths etc. This particular shop is run by a family who gave up smoking through vaping and gave me good advice while I was doing the same.

My brother did the same 👍

A cheerful, musical Korero this morning Nick, Some Reggae & Rawiri's line dancing young people.

Far from invisible I'd say Chippy will be enjoying time with his family before a very busy year ahead in which he won't be seeing a great deal of them!. Anyone who doubts Chippy's ability should watch the BHN boys hour long interview with him a month ago. I hope Cloe had a good rest too.

A very joyful song and dance duo to start another perfect day in Paradise 😁

Also a very accurate summation of Party priorities before the work starts again. A couple of thoughts came to mind as I was reading the list….

ACT is to me an acronym for Aotearoa’s Contentious Tribulation. No further comment required.

NZF. Who??

National. How’s Luxo going to cope if TikTok gets banned? He might have to turn up in Parliament to answer questions which are mounting up day by day about what it is he actually does for a job. The day must come soon when he has to answer what his “laser focused, working incredibly hard” mantra really means. It’s obviously for someone else to manage, but who? Nobody on his side has done anything of worth for the last year.

Te Pati Maori, Labour and Green. All actually working incredibly hard to deliver a country we can feel safe in, know we won’t be thrown on the streets by a heartless administration because we don’t fit their ideals and one we can be proud to call home.

A lovely photo of Marama and Chloe. I wish all things great and wonderful for these two and the future of their Party.

There’s one other politician I’m most concerned about, way more than any of the above. I had to send a letter to the Herald, (yep, yet another one) after reading his comment about the “incompetence” of firefighters in LA. That speaks volumes about the revolting creature about to reclaim his place in the White House. I’ve included it below. Now I’m going to turn off the worry, turn on the television and watch the Otago Sparks and Wellington Blades entertain us for a few hours with a great contest of T20 cricket. The best remedy for all that troubles us 😁😁 Letter below…..

This is one of the worst disasters in the history of our country. The just can’t put out fires. What’s wrong with them?”. I doubt I will ever hear a more insensitive, disgusting, condescending, cruel statement as long as I live. While the

citizens of Los Angeles are losing their homes, businesses and lives, the President elect of the USA, no doubt sitting somewhere safe on the other side of America, Trump has the gall to ask why those firefighters risking their own lives to save others from an emergency way beyond anyone’s belief simply can’t turn on a hose to fix it. Perhaps he could round up his posse of dubious worth who are apparently going to “save America”, get over to California and show them how it’s done. This man isn’t fit to run a bath, much less a country he has no real interest in unless it’s making him look good. He’s a disgrace to America and democracy. God bless America, it needs you more than ever.

Thanks Nick. Focusing on what people do, not what they say, is a great way to show how they think.

Well said Nick and I love the song. Been down in Whanganui for a wiki staying at Castlecliffs. We LOVE Whanganui, dogos included. What an eclectic and arty community, seriously arty. They don't pull down old buildings on a whim...............it was hard to come back home. We made friends and were hugged and accepted there for all our eccentricities. I could say much about the experience, the mixture of rich and mana whenua having access to the best spots by the awa....people out fishing on the river bank every day for kahawai, the smell of fish remains and fish smoking on the warm wind at night..................at least if private ownership is sacrosanct, and this latest Bill does go thru.............tangata whenua will be safe in their dwellings by the awa and te moana down there. Or will they? Is it property or money that will rule the day.

Loved Whanganui, we truly did....................it was a life changing stay and seminal for new directions in 2025. I will write on it sometime..........didn't see no politicians there on hols, and thank the stars I didn't see Tonto Jones down there for Tariana's tangi. This song is up there with Cool Down by Kolohe Kai as a perfecto and most fav Kiwi summer song. As ever, thank you Nick for your kupu.

Thanks Nick - really good korero. I am reallly, really worried about the regulatory bill - and the damage it could do to this country. What a tragedy we got Seymore in - he's just wrecking things. I'm worried about what it could do to early childhood. Having been involved in early childhood education for my whole career I see some excellent and some terrible things. We desperately need to give protection to very young children (some as young as only a few weeks old). An article out today about a research project showing poor early experiences lead to late obesity as well as other troubles. Seymore seems to be wanting to destroy every part of our society.

Just a really great video of Rawiri. He could go singing for a living if he lost his day job! Loved it. And thought that post by Act obscene. Equal rights! Maori have never had equal rights. How could they when their land was stolen and their language beaten out of them?
