The traditional media isn't going to change. We need to call out their bias, as Nick has done here. BUT personal attacks on individual reporters won't change a thing. Instead, let's encourage thoughtful news sources like Nick Rockell, Gordon Campbell, The Spinoff, Newsroom, Gerard Otto, The Conversation - to name a few. They all need our subscriptions to keep going. And they all need us to promote and re-post their articles so that their readership grows.
Their funding follows that of political parties. Media on "The right" get huge buckets of gold, the media on "the left" subsists on our donations. Please, do NZ a favour and subscribe today.

I sometimes wonder whether any of our "political reporters" have studied Politics at all. Have they even studied Pols101 where they might get a clue or two about how government works.

During the Covid Pandemic, the planned Merger of TVNZ & RNZ was already on the Government's Drawing Board & Fafoi was the Minister in charge of 2 important Ministries, Immigration & Public Broadcast Media- Communications.
There were huge disruptions during the Mandates & Lockdown periods that forced some fancy footwork to come about so people in the Media could work from home during that time frame to keep the News Media working despite the disruptions. People gotta know, ya know?? The Immigration & returning Residents that Fafoi was in charge of wasn't working well at all & had a snowball effect on the Corporates that were shocked silly that they had been forced temporarily to literally shut down their Economic Capital Flow.
Robertson designed some extra Curricular "Bailout packages" to help both Business's & Employee's that were working at the time of the lockdowns disruptions. A big chunk of the Cost of Economic Recovery went toward some real big Grants being handed out using Reserve Bank Loaned Cash that Grant used as a Backstop to halt the Economic Bleeding going on at the time. We all were in difficult times, but the Bailouts & qualifications around Working, or Not working folks in the Labour Force created a Public riff in how those working at the time received over double the amount of the then current unemployment Benefit Folks that were working & those that were on the currently unemployed Benefit, but NOT working at the time.
It wasn't really fair at all, but it saved a lot of Mortgages from tipping over at that time & probably kept some Businesses floating that should have actually been allowed to fail.
The Private / Public system fallout that these Double Standards created rippled through the economy & caused some very hard feelings from some folks in both the Private Sector & Fafoi's Government Ministries & put a lot of noses out of joint as to who got what of the free money passed around.
I noticed a big change in the General media's Programming & Attitude that started appearing with the "First Up & Morning Report Teams. They seemed to get pretty Feral & intensely Critical of the Labour Government & Jacinda at the time when she got back from her Overseas juggernauts for Trade & shoulder ubbing withother Leaders around the globe.
It seemed that Fafoi's Ministries almost Fell apart with the Covid Disruptions that locked our Borders down & then the Planned Merger fell apart.
Some apparent changes to the RNZ & TVNZ pending merger caused some attitude changes at the top that seemed to appear in the style of Interviews conducted & that National & Luxon turned into the good guys & Labour assumed the role of Bad Guy. During that time frame Ms. Too Much was Jacinda's best friend & personal Media Attaché on her Sales Trips Abroad. She was full of praises until the UN Speech to the empty General Assembly Room following the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, which seemed to change the Media Relationship to the Labour Government as they started falling like a house of Cards in a Windstorm..
We woke up to a hardened morning report & a Weaponised TVNZ News Team within the span of a week, or so.
Jessica was a bit desperate to find her niche after the fallout with Jacinda, for whatever reason & she started appearing in Designer Ware & Heavier Screen Makeup in a New, more serious professional Newscaster look. I don't know what can be done with Wild Ginger Eyebrows to soften things, but apprently neither do the Makeup Artists she works with!
That seemed to happen about the time that Fafoi stepped aside & resigned to run his own Government Lobbying Firm, like Simon Bridges had attempted to do the same when he & National parted company after the knife in the back from Judith "slasher" Collins!

Trouble is that it creates far too many conflicts of primary Interests between the Ideologies you are sworn to serve as a Crown Government minister & an completely unfair advantage playing all sides against the Centre. That may have been where the Corporate Culture changed & created a bunch of Arrogant Meat Eater news commentators & Political Journalists.
We've seemed to have switched from being a reasonably Fair & Balanced Team of Media Journalists & Broadcasters to becoming more of an American Fox News Sensationalist thing to increase Revenue & Market Share & bring American style MSM Sensationalism to the forefront.
Everybody changed horses in the middle of the Stream and got nasty with the incumbent Government. That attitude carried into the 2023 Election & is still very apparent today in how Labour is so reviled & National treated like Saviours of the known universe.
There may have been a few bucks passed around quietly in the Studio's to secure future Media Mouthpieces, but thats not public info to base judgements on.
We seemed to descend from a semi Social Democratic Country to a Neoliberal Capitalist dominated Bee Hive quite quickly with the Transferals of Power.
I thinks it's a Populist phase sorta thing where ya gotta be in to win & look nice, or you're yesterdays news & unemployed real fast if the ratings Tank & after all, it's all about Money these days, ya know?? It's just business, you understand, right???

My wife insisted on listening to Hosking this morning and his interview of Chris Hipkins was so biased as to be almost amusing. What an absolute mean spirited plonker he is.

I was at a function last weekend hosted by my unsuccessful electorate MP to thank his volunteers .
Reference was made to the nastiness and negativity from the media and supporters from the other side to him, in particular and Labour in general.
A very clever woman there quoted Oscar Wilde "if you roll around in the mud with a pig, you both end up covered in mud , but the pig ENJOYS it" .
