Why do the rich want to destroy the planet? The only home we have? I also wonder about this, every day. "The sad reality though is these jerks know they’ll be dead before things really hit the fan. " This is why, Nick. You nailed it. The selfish bastards know what they're doing, and they just don't care.

Labour build, national destroy and sadly that's the cycle over and over again.

So this is exactly how capitalism is expected to work with the rich getting richer and the rest being used to make sure this happens. Accelerated in Aotearoa with the introduction of Rogernomics. Climate change implementation policies are an impediment to this making sure the riches continue to flow upwards.

Food for thought Nick! We need to take away political donations as favours can direct policy implementation. The majority of the extreme wealthy seem to care about making more money rather than caring for the people and the environment. Unfortunately the outlook for NZ and the world is grim. I see more poverty and less focus on looking after the environment with the Nact government.

we lost it when long ago we drew away from the natural world around us that we had co-evolved with, to disconnect ourselves. We lost the magic of intricate relationships with how life happens on our planet. Then a movement to congregate in cities where new forms of heirarchy evolved and leaders were disconnected from people. Then individualism disconnected us from the herd and empires were built by disconnected leaders. The disconnect. The super rich must believe that the existential crisis is for others, that they and theirs will be safe in their luxury bunkers and technology can eventually rebuild a better, less populated world on a dead planet where there is plenty of unpopulated territory to send their unwanted away to. The ultimate disconnect. They will survive, whatever happens. Won't they be surprised when we come for them with our human scale technology like pitchforks.

To quote a Friend down in Port Chalmers / Aramoana way. "We had it made in the Shade until those damn Sapiens came raging out of Africa 75,000 years ago wanting everything they touched & willing to kill there way through anything in their way to get their greedy l'il Mitt's on it! That's the last time we Neanderthals shared the recipe for Cajun Rubbed Tyrannosaur Ribs with those fekin Ijots!!! Just sayin" Pffft!

Yes we urgently need to remove donations to political parties, as these foster the disintegration of democracy! Good men like Norman Kirk would be turning in their graves.....

Yeah youd think they would look at their kids and grandkids with a twinge of conscience but ,Trump-like, they'd rather bring the whole planet down than a) change anything about the way they think, live and operate and b) avoid anything that looks like critical self-analysis and take responsibility for their role in it. Caring for those around them is antithetical to their MO, aue

My overarching theory at the moment is that voters are moving to the Right because the Right-wing politicians tell them what they want to hear about climate change, so they don't have to feel guilty about continuing to do exactly as they please. More and more of "me" and less and less of "us".

I want to tick LIKE but it's just so bloody sad and unnecessary ( the inaction on climate crisis & poverty - not your column Nick) . We have the landscape, the people, the brains, resources, and freedoms to CHANGE but we just don't. Change is hard and requires we rethink next 20 years plus- not the next 2 and yes- spend lots of money but investment long term. Our grandkids will wonder why we didn't when we had the chance to stop destruction. (8 & 6 grandies are already asking) It will never be cheaper to change then now!

Hi Nick, I can understand that the rich don't give a flying fig about messing up the planet for most of us. I think they reckon they can extend the practice that already prevails of living on the highest hills where the sea won't reach. And there won't be snow so they'll be able to drive and not get too cold up there. And if most of us have perished they won't have to share the food or resources that are left and can con the remaining people into working for them as reward for being able to live part of the way up the highest hills.

What I do struggle with is what stops them thinking about how their progeny will survive - I know they are good at sending their kids off to boarding schools etc so they don't get their hands dirty with parenting. But still and all, surely they think about their potency as owners of the earth and their role as the populators into the future? Maybe they don't. And that may be the saving of humankind. But I'm not betting on it!

I’ve discussed this with some right voters and they claim they don’t believe in Climate Change, plead ignorance. It’s too inconvenient to admit it’s real and do something about it. So closed minded.
