Thanks Nick. It reminded me of the ‘bad old days’ when the pack of nasty media would attack, attack Jacinda. Didn’t it change with this lot. It’s about time Chippy etc. put their foot down and laid out some rules. Even challenge them at point of interview for such behaviour.
It was really pleasing to see the collective media stand up. The two parties also made it clear it is ok to disagree on some things, but not to swipe at each other, like Winston is doing atm. And as they said, they agree on more than they disagree. Under our system, parties do compete for votes and there will be differences in policy. Thats ok too. I get what you are saying Nick about coalition agreements being secretive, but there is no other way I can think of. We elect the party of our choice and trust its leaders to stand up for the policies we voted for. We win some, we lose some but having a respectful and collegial relationship as was demonstated yesterday is a really good place to begin. On Maiki : I am just so incensed about that piece last night. The worst thing is she missed the important message of unity - really important at Waitangi - and was hugely disrespectful to Peeni Henare, an MP who has served nearly 12 years including in Ministerial roles. I'm thinking of sending a letter of complaint and I suspect I won't be the only one - not that it will make much difference.
It sure was a breath of fresh air to see both Te Pāti Reipa and Te Pāti Kākariki standing together showing and practising Kotahitanga.
It was clear to see that both Te Pāti Reipa and Te Pāti Kākariki both understand the importance of Waitangi and Te Tiriti o Waitangi which is more than I can say for the current lot we have leading Aotearoa right now.
Totally agree Nick. That performance by Maliki Sherman on the “news” was totally biased and opinion not news. When watching this it is apparent that any member of the current govt certainly gets a free ride in comparison from our media.
Her treatment of the two retirements tells us all we need to know about how the media are approaching election year. She claims Labour is infighting. But with Collins no mention of Orivida, airport fuel lines getting in the way of their swamp Kauri etc.
I’d got in late Thursday arvo to Waitangi and we took the Ruapekapeka diversion due to a traffic incident (no casualties ) between Whangarei and Kawakawa
Watched some good music in the big tent on the Titi marae, met some fantastic people and enjoyed some sightseeing in this stunning area before back to where we were staying in Paihia
Up the next day to see the dawn service on tv because though I’ve been before in 2023 my mate wanted a sleep in so we were up in time for the 9am ferry to Waitangi pier and the arrival of the waka coming down the river from Haruru - there was such a celebration around this and I’d missed that last time only seeing them after all aligned on the beach so it was my highlight of the day
I also enjoyed talking to people I hadn’t seen for years, meeting new people and even walking past Chris Hipkins at one point so I got to say Kia Ora to him 😊
The navy were hard out preparing the big lunch for anyone who wanted it under the big marquis and they even had titi (mutton bird) but I’d already filled up on other Kai so I didn’t partake
Lots of sun, lots of walking about in it, so I was knackered out after a few hours but bought a beautiful Harakeke potae and some rongoa from local Kaimahi and a Ngā Pūhi Tshirt for my son cos that’s one of his iwi.
Good conversations in the forum tent where anyone can join in ask questions/ or make a case for their point of view
Caught the ferry back to Paihea and had a stunning swim in the late afternoon at the beach before getting some fish for tea battered fresh snapper yum all I needed
I wish the coverage captured more of all the good relaxed stuff that happens on the lower Titi marae rather than top marae where year after year the pathetic Seymour gets tv coverage to shit stir followed by his predictable poor me behaviour, and words down below that I heard were that the raruraru between Kiri and Eru happened in the right place on the marae atea.
I'm wondering about a massive communal negative letter 'bombing' of the station about the journalist Maiki's performance....there has got to be some way of punishing bad journalism by the public....??
What I find fascinating Kim is that is exactly what happened in 2024 when Maiki was perceived to be gloating about the coalitions fall in the polls. Hosking said at the time she was being "frothy and sensationalist," with Luxon agreeing with that assessment, according to an RNZ report. Social media also went berserk with govt supporters frothing at the mouth and making a record number of complaints. it would be great if we could pose our questions on her performance this time directly to her as she was seen as an outstanding young Maori journalist when interviewed by E-Tangata in 2016 with the title "Maiki Sherman: Holding the powerful to account" - worth a read btw.
Surely all such discussions are about government as distinct from politics! Elections are where people select and elect individuals to provide the basic functions of government = best shared use of renounces. What we expect from those we vote for - what we get is politics, which is a biased fascist oligarchy dictatorship of dominant power and control. It is a simple optional choice - self-interest or humanity interest.
Maiki was like a dog at a bone, the way she barked her questions at Chippy, Carmen, Marama and Chloe. I was impressed that none of them told her to “sit, be quiet and we’ll feed you soon” or just muzzle her.
George is right about this year being a media shit show. It’s no surprise, given that Nicola and Paul Goldsmith appointed the TVNZ board. Hardly impartial I would think. Labour, Greens and possibly TPM, once their internal affairs are sorted, will have to adopt the “damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead” approach relentlessly to ensure success on the day of the election. It will be very interesting to see how the coalition parties advertise their wares. None of them seem to have any real sense of what’s happening globally, how it affects us at the bottom of the world, nor do they seem to care. I read this morning that unemployment has reached the highest level in 10 years. Let’s just hope the coalition carries on with its own self destruction, rather than try to convince the public that everything is “GREAT” in our country.
The only things “GREAT BIG” in our country will be holes that Shane and Luxo want to dig, wells they want to drill, more unemployment, rising prices, inflation, emigration of our best people, homelessness and a lack of hope for a better future for “all New Zealanders”, as Luxo said.
“Lies, damned lies and statistics” has long been the phrase used to describe misinformation, biased and “tweaked” reporting about a country’s economic affairs. Never has this phrase been so authentic and fact based than under this coalition of conservative conspirators. We can’t (literally) afford another three years of this.
👿 I don't watch TV news these days, apart from on delay where I can excise Maiki & her ilk from my eyes & ears 🤬 So I was not sure it was her obnoxious repetitive questioning & 💩stirring about Peeni Henare's retirement, or an obnoxious clone 😱 Pleased it was her, as I'd hate to think there was more than one 🤷
I thought that the Labour/Greens message on the Waitangi clip was pitch perfect - "yes we are nice people & respect other people when they don't agree with us, BUT we are who we are & will be trying to get ALL possible votes for our own party because that is our JOB" 💪
Seems like it is going to be a real battle to get "fair" media coverage from the big players so independent media outlets & supporters are going to have to help with persistent fact checking re the current govt & it's abysmal record 💪😎
100% Nick. TV3 coverage was no better. Trying to turn the Henare announcement into a scandal. I wondered why the Collins announcement a few days earlier didn't receive the same excitement. I'd stopped watching TV1 because Sherman annoys me so much. I seem to have painted myself into a corner.
Right here is where I go to these days for my daily news....especially when I am living in my van (have bed, solar powered fridge/freezer and waste disposal bucket will travel rather than pay horrendous rents....so thanks very much yet again Nick.
I mean, sure. But, by this morning on RNZ, Carmel Sepuloni was back to sounding pretty insistent again that the Greens would have zero say in any policy—especially related to tax—under a "Labour [sic] government."
Oh give it up eh? What about "each party is separate & running to get as many votes FOR THEIR OWN PARTY" gets missed? Even when it is clearly & specifically stated by the clip Nick has included from YESTERDAY? The Deputy Leader's job is to convince people to support LABOUR policies... 🤷 Just as the Greens leaders will be trying to convince voters to give them enough share of the vote to be part of any coalition AND have enough leverage to negotiate 🤔
Yep, totally acknowledge the frustration. But, none of this stuff is that clean. About 80% of the sales pitch for the current coalition (and accepted wisdom in their voting block) is "you can't vote for Labour because you'll also get the Green Marxists and dysfunctional TPM". It's clear now that National have nothing to offer the country beyond austerity and "we won't work with the Green party"... So, given Nick's headline was "Unity" I still think it's appropriate to point out that Sepuloni stridently dismissing the policies of an opposition partner (who happens to also consistently be the 3rd most popular party in the country) is unlikely to be helping their cause in the way it might previously have done.
⁉️ Sorry - if someone likes Labour then they should vote LABOUR - if they like Greens, then they should vote GREENS - because until votes are counted NO-ONE KNOWS how much any party will get & whether they will be in govt or not. Trying to game the system in advance is pointless. The fact is NO GREEN VOTER WILL NOT VOTE because the Deputy Leader of the LABOUR party goes hard for her own party so it does not harm the Greens, it does not harm Labour, and if anything a swing voter may be encouraged to vote Labour if they are anti-Greens economic policies et al but also don't support any current coalition parties. I actually like both L & G, but will say again (broken record time friends!😁) UNLESS LABOUR HAS ENOUGH SEATS the Greens cannot be part of a govt at the current time in Aotearoa - that is my point. Being negative about a Labour leader going hard for her party plays into the hands of Seymour et al, (and Maiki Sherman!) and they don't need ANY help with trying to beat up divisions, real or manufactured 🤷
🙋 Leading up to the election, if any of us truly want a change of govt, then play up the positives and zip it 🤐 with irrelevant negativity - if there is anything we have learned nothing in Aotearoa is "💯% Pure" but some are 100% toxic 🤔
Well put Cindy! I’m convinced👍.(actually I was already), Labour all the way, but great to see the understanding between them and Greens. Long may it continue🙂🙂
Are you heading to Waitangi Nick? There are a lot of issues that are troubling Maori which this Government is responsible for. There will be some rather straight korero on the paipai over the next few days, no wonder Luxon will be back in Auckland with those he is comfortable with, Pakeha 'wealthy and sorted' for Waitangi Day. I hope there is going to be full coverage of the speechs. available to watch on TV.

Still worth doing, going on record, I think??
It was disgusting to watch Sherman.
Morena Nick.
Thanks for this newsletter this morning.

It's gong to be a media shit show this year.
Such a buzz to get up to Auckland and see Nesian Mystic on 31st Jan
Along with many other greats of the Aotearoa music scene but tbh I was mainly there to see them 🥰 and they didn’t disappoint
Up to Waitangi on Thursday and I’m feeling excited - such a wonderful important to us as a people and welcoming place to visit
Maiki Sherman is a puppet of right wing media nothing more - I wonder if one day she’ll wake up to it and realise the pay packet is blood money 💰 🩸
Hope you have a great time in Waitangi, and yes, Nesian Mystic are great. 🙂

TV three did a slightly better job, out lining how busy Henare was at the marae starting very early on the morning. Nothing g to look out there.
And reporter Glenn's hongi with Peeni was quite moving - a show of respect.
And only 3News mentioned the rare minerals deal currently being discussed with the US. 🤬
Profoundly irritating and blatantly partisan. It is likely to be a trend up till the election which needs to be continually called out
