Winston Peters goes all statesmanlike overseas but is such a growly, destructive and abusive old bastard at home. I say we keep him away even if it means pinching other speeches because he has the imagination of a flea.

Agree he wants to be seen as a statesman overseas. I was surprised in a good way when I heard it. The call for peace and diplomacy a fine and not frequently stated sentiment at the moment. It matches his UN speech in sentiment. Yes he is good when overseas. The problem I see when he is away is it gives more voice space to the blustering Jones and vindictive Seymour.

Yep on all accounts.

Yes, he's much less trouble when he's out of the country. I guess that's why successive governments have honoured him with Foreign Affairs. He laps up that undeserved respect offered to foreign dignitaries, and doesn’t generally throw any of his toddler tantrums or drunkle rants. Everyone is so surprised to see him acting like a statesman that they think he is doing a good job.

The critical word is acting. It is a performance not followed through with matching actions. Hypocritical.

He used to come to a nightclub in Auckland that I worked at many years ago , he would get pissed up, smoke like a chimney and yet 40 years later he is still amongst us......

Maybe this was his first attempt at AI? Siri, give me a statesmanlike speech commemorating a great battle, but don’t mention vaccination…

An optimistic point of view could be. Thank God he used someone else's brain, and didn't embarrass us.

Good thinking. Based on recent history his own words would have been less desirable.

Tautoko that!

It is a little embarrasng that he para-phrased Abraham Lincoln without acknowledging him.

I agree. Using it however gave a good structure to the speech. Certainly not direct plagiarism but acknowledgment of others always a good thing.

Oh but he did John.. he always does

Winston's not very original Anzac speech adds weight to my belief that our Government ministers are a cluster of AI avatars. They have selected, pre used prerecorded speeches, clichés and other mostly irrelevant rubbish keyed into their logic units each day by not very intelligent programmers before being sent out to continue their public confusion duties. If only someone could slow down and reset David Seymour, who appears to be the prototype and wired rather amateurishly, giving a slightly rogue, illogical slant to everything he says, life with these androids and their irritating, irresponsible gibberish, might be a little more easy to bear.

Some acknowledgment of the source for his speech should have been made. If a high school student had presented this as their own work they would be in deep trouble. It all sounded good which of course is Winston’s specialty when it suits him. What aggravates me most though is the hypocrisy of a man, so divisive at home, to speak about unity on the world stage.

It's difficult when past statesmen have subsumed the best lines! However, we have some excellent writers in Aotearoa. Speechwriters need to call on that skill and create something more in the moment. It was a timely opportunity, lost.

Bahahaha… this is a pearler Nick, a couple of proper laugh-out-loud moments here that prompted me to re-read today’s Korero. It’s nice to be simply entertained and not just bloody outraged. Honestly.. “what a pillock is (this) man”. It’s not so much his evoking the powerful imagery and emotion in one of the greatest speeches ever written, it’s that he simply didn’t, couldn’t, or forgot to credit it’s author. But as brazenly dumb and out of ideas, and as embarrassing as it is to have this twerp poncing about as our deputy PM, it’s the temerity (as you rightly point out Nick) that Peters shows by stealing from such a clarion call for equality.

100%! The temerity! Who is he trying to kid?!

Grifters will grift, spokespersons will spout while equity and affirmative action can only peer through the fog of dis/mis information and intolerance. Bless you Uncle Winston.

You hit on a subject which did really irk me this week… Heather Kavan said it all for me. We entirely agree. When WP was handed the foreign affairs file it irked us to such an extent it compelled me to start a Parliamentary Petition asking that all port folios be removed from the man. My wording was changed by the PP Office but remains the same request. Such an insincere hypocrite must not speak for NZ.

That got me going, Nick! Good old Winston C, good old Iron Maiden. How many pairs of jeans did those guys rip? Borrowing is fine as long as you attribute. Otherwise it's plagiarism.

At the time, I wondered if he had some kind of split personality. How could that mean, grumpy man be so noble. Now I see.

He should acknowledge Lincoln. He makes out when overseas that he is such a knowledgeable statesman but back here in NZ doesn't give a fig about history or anything that doesn't advance what he wants.

I think the greatest insult is that Mr 6% is DPM! This alone is reason enough to scrap MMP and look for a more representative electoral system. As for his speech, he is a pompous buffoon and wouldn't even have considered plagiarism to be an error. A man lacking in any form of gravitas.

I agree

I agree too. The only positive is that his speech was clear and able to understood( not that I wat he'd much) unlike Question Time when his speech is unintelligible. If I wasn't so charitable you would swear the man was under the influence?!

Good to highlight the reference to Gettysburg, a reference to past events in our present time, nothing has changed, we are still on the brink of more war as extension of those underway now. I can only think that all those young men and women - soldiers and civilians, HAVE died in vain! "When will we every learn" (that's a quote). As from yesterday AI is a useful tool, and it will be exploited - without shame, at every opportunity. Will we ever learn - to see the hidden message behind every speech, every message from a sponsor - to search for that hidden meaning?
