Great writing Nick! Clearly more than we will be told. Given a complaint was made, I suggest resolution took the time for an agreeable outcome. I find it scary that the media go into a frenzy over women MPs, or former MPs, but males are left with minimal damage. Along with that the women are investigated professionally and publicly yet in this case Luxons talked how he was a great bloke hard worker….
And, if Nick's commentary in this case is accurate rather than satire ... "because Bayly had not met his own high standards" ... what the?.. If HE has HIGH standards, the rest of us can go hold up stage coaches and be exonerated!! Oh no! Sorry. Wrong. You and I can't do that, Jo, we'd be put in the stocks and have rubbish thrown at us at intervals.
Maiki Sherman is a true blue National shill. Was notable how little air time she was given at Kingi Tuheitia's tangi. She's another Potaka. Notwithstanding I really hope at least some of the truth about this latest scandal comes out and is not buried. Madeleine Chapman had a gratuitous 'whataboutism' dig at Meka Whatiri [how many years ago????] so I'm not hopeful media will do their job. After all these are fragile white male egos, not women, and brown women particularly, being viciously harassed who need protecting 🙄
Sherman seems to come in different flavours, and yesterday, she was certainly not saying anything that might scare the horses. It's a while back, but wasn't Meka stood down? Unlike Bayly for the last week.
Yep she absolutely was! And how many other scandals have gone under the bridge since then?? WTF. Yeah, I think Madeleine Chapman is on a rw downwards slide and has been for a while.
When I think of the absolute hounding of former Green former MPs, this is complete & utter double standards for bullying National MPs. Just reflects the total chaos of this government that practices no good governance! Just ugh!
Two many ‘formers’ there but remembering the constant media coverage & attention & wondering if Mr Bayley will get similar? Will media stake out his house, question his family & friends, etc? Or will he continue as Port Waikato’s MP?
An orchestrated litany of lies (Justice Mahon)! A big cover up here by Luxon and his aides. There is definitely damage control to the max. No transparency just roll out the lies and move on! There needs to be a release of the complaint which obviously is more serious than we’ve been fed. But I bet the person concerned has been taken care of and has signed non disclosure documents.
When I saw the media stand-up by Andrew Baily I was honestly dumbfounded at how poorly he spoke and how disingenuous he sounded. I got the impression nothing would have been said if a complaint hadn't been made. As for our hairless leader, what a bloody joke he is, and it seems his office are incompetent if they sit on this information for a couple of days before informing the PM.
This whole thing just highlights how weak Christopher Luxon is and how pathetic Andrew Bayly is.
Personally I think there is a hell of a lot more to this than what has actually been said.
I would say more, but I have an important date with my TV watching Kapa Haka.
Ah, yes, Te Matatini from New Plymouth this week. 🙂
70,000 people expected, they reckon, a massive event and no doubt great business for the region. Wouldn’t it be good to see it given the same sponsorship level and coverage as something like the America's Cup? But then I guess it wouldn’t be the same. Maybe it’s not only fine but better for the lack of corporate involvement and hype.
I'd love to be there, and despite being pakeha, this Rotorua boy will be cheering for the mighty Te Arawa. Hope you enjoy it.
Clearly Bayley isn’t female, brown skinned or in one of the left parties otherwise the Harvey Norman Herald would have had him front page today and at least for the next three days. As for Luxton he is a gutless wonder as he has proven by not sacking those in his coalition who should have been sacked for many reasons including the corruption behind the Fast Track legislation.
Andy’s obnoxious behaviour probably ticked every one of his/National’s KPI’s, except the one about being caught - then they need the mendacious minimising media to make the waters murkier…
Andrew Bayly didn't declare $100 k of shares in a company that provides Nz education resources, but that was barely mentioned when he became a Minister.
Couldn't have happened to a better loser. There's been skulduggery around this and if Luxon thinks he's off the hook it will all be waiting for him next week in Parliament. Interesting how Luxon has had to step up Scott Simpson, who he deemed not good enough to be a Minister last year. They are scraping the barrell now.
Nick, thank you for your energy and tenacity in watching, listening and researching all of this crappy stuff we are living through right now. I really appreciate it. I am exhausted and overwhelmed by it and I know that’s not a helpful reaction.
When I first saw he’d resigned and read his statement I thought of all the reality hidden behind the cliched descriptions. However the timeline didn’t occur to me.
Interesting that there wasn’t an early leak to the media about the complaint, eh? I guess that’s reserved for the left.
Luxon as usual-'a duck for cover'. Bayly disingenuous and all about him. 'Touch an arm in not sexual not violent way'. What even is that? The staff member complained straight away. They obviously felt shaken by the event.
Out on an unsupportive limb here but I think there might be “something going on” with Andy. Like there might be a diagnostics shoe to drop in the coming months or something.
You mean they’re trying to come up with a sympathy garnering excuse for his appalling behaviour. I wonder what it could be? Obviously something that would let him remain as an MP or leave with a golden handshake.
Well, yeah, the traumatised American side of me might put it that way. Please understand, I pretty much despise the current crop of NATS, so I’m not wanting to give them cover. At all. As much as I would prefer to differ with how they’ve handled this, I find them also possibly acting—almost innately without thinking it through—as one might when their grandfather utters some nonsense. They are almost instinctively making excuses for him. Yes,”covering” for him.
And yes, I could also argue that it may just be in their DNA to ALWAYS make excuses for members of their tribe while revealing their intellectual inconsistency when it comes to their past attacks on how they’ve PERCEIVED such matters were handled by the other tribe in the past.
People aren’t rational actors anymore. If they ever were. They’ve def been enabled into rejecting any leanings towards intellectual honesty these days.
Indeed. I had that alcohol thought as well. Personal past intimate experience with dementia has turned me into maybe an overly sensitive Dementia Detector and all I can say is listening (only, no video) to Bayly’s “explanations” the last day or two set off my alarms. And although I DESPISE No Boats Nikki for her complete lack of objectivity and self analysis, I found her ‘we’re showing him some humanity’ BS to also sound like someone who realises innately they are dealing with someone in some sort of decline or crisis. She would deny that if accused. But that’s what is funny about denial surrounding people having an issue…
We probably shouldn’t over-think it. Their voters sure don’t. Come next year they’ll forget entirely how concerned they were in 2023 with ‘all that debt Labour had saddled us with.’
It was an advisor who was at the other end of this, right? I can't even imagine how these officials can do their job in the current environment. Sometimes, they need to say, no or not yet, or whatever was at the bottom of this argument. That underpins their job - being honest. And it's not easy to walk the line between what a minister wants (immediately) and what is literally possible. Been there, done that, and I can say, words are tough enough without hands-on. Here's a (distant) hug for whoever that person is. They'll be both furious and shaken.

Just when we thought Jessica couldn’t be replaced☹️☹️☹️

I think they should ban non-disclosure agreements relating to dismissals.
And interestingly no published leak to the media. Clearly the offender isn’t a woman or brown or from the left.
Morena Nick.

Yes, and at, what is one of the most beautiful venues in the world. A sound shell across the water from a natural amphitheater

I had a good laugh at the "Harvey Norman Herald"; it does feel like a collection of adverts.
As one wag on Twitter said, Bayly should've joined NZ First or ACT - he'd still have a job as Luxon would do even less.
Yeah I’m not sure that someone placing their hand on someone’s upper arm would normally be an issue, has to have been a more egregious act surely.
A hard grip or a shake either with or without leaning in and shouting and grimacing??
And was the staffer a man or woman? Three guesses and the first two don’t count…
I doubt he’d do that to a man - although it was a man he called a loser.
Whatever did happen it must have upset the staffer enough to make an official complaint.
Andy’s obnoxious behaviour probably ticked every one of his/National’s KPI’s, except the one about being caught - then they need the mendacious minimising media to make the waters murkier…
I do like a bit of alliteration, nice.
Andrew Bayly didn't declare $100 k of shares in a company that provides Nz education resources, but that was barely mentioned when he became a Minister.
Yes! Everyone is saying this is his second strike, but really it’s his third. He should be removed altogether.
Also, in situations like this, MP’s should not get the ongoing perks after their political career ends.
Baley is still an MP. He has staff. Will he have future “animated discussions “ and what provisions have been made to protect those who work with him?

Thanks again, Nick.

Earlier I thought a stroke perhaps. Would explain the slow slurred speech. Mind you, drink does cause dribble as well.

I understand and have empathy for your alarm bells. I guess we need to remember there is alcoholic dementia.
But surely if there were signs known to his colleagues, they would support him out of being an MP altogether. Well if they really care
So if I put both together, I wonder if he is holding the seat while another representative is found?
