That bloody Seymour - just belittling people because he doesn't have an answer to the hard questions. And.. we've had more coverage of his engagement to some poor deluded schmuck (oooo am I belittling people now? Why yes) than proper news.

Sorry to hear you're losing subscribers, hopefully not too many. Your writing is great, informative, fun and always on point. Keep it up!

Nick - I find I'm getting as much "news" from your great work now as from any other outlet. It's fascinating seeing you transition to essentially be a first-hand reporter in what I suspect is the future of media. I'd love to see you take on Seymour etc, I wonder what it takes to get in at press conferences. If Bernard can do it, why can't you?

Great suggestion regarding Nick getting into those sort of press conferences. The mainstream "journalists" are all pussies.

Guy Williams was spot on.

Go Guy Williams… spot on and funny

'Pouring poison in one’s ear is a quote from Hamlet about putting mistruths in people’s minds,'

Er, no it isn't. It's about MURDERING YOUR BROTHER, as Rimmer would doubtless have known had he ever actually read the play in question.

Seymour's good at misquoting isn't he! and as smooth as a chocolate laxative.

Love the description. 😂

Every time I see more of Seemore I find him more despicable. His view is the ‘truth’ in his (Atlas) worldview, and dissenters have to be put in their place (feeding on the bottom). His retaliatory remarks are getting more personal and nastier every day - what a statesman!

Despicable is my go-to descriptor as well. You're right about his personal attacks. Feeling the pressure maybe?

💪👍Go Guy Williams 👏 My goodness the scenery alone is spectacular up there when you see shots of the dawn & the waka etc. - then overlay that with the history & the present day kaupapa and I can see why it is a magical occasion to be a part of. Thanks for sharing with those of us who watch from far away (mind you - I can mute or fast forward through See-less when his punchable face intrudes on my enjoyment 😁)

Thanks Nick another fabulous read. Sorry to hear about your subscriptions. You are an excellent writer, I imagine that hard decisions are being made everyday as the economic/employment outlook doesn’t improve.

I take my hat off to Guy Williams he spoke the truth and he spoke for me and I suspect many many of us. In true fashion Seymour attacks the person because he has no other comeback. It strikes me just how offensive Seymour, Winnie, Jones, Willis, Bishop (the Right wingers) are … their responses to questions or challenges are most often vile, snarky, petty, patronising and riddled with mis/disinformation. The opposition in contrast are inclusive, thoughtful, rational, whole hearted and worthy of leadership - Chippy and all the Maori leaders who have been interviewed over Waitangi and throughout the TPB oral submission process have held themselves with such mana and grace. I am proud to be on the Left, because the Right wingers are hideous.

I’ll take Guy Williams everyday over David ‘Epstein’ Seymour. And twice on Waitangi Day 😂😋

I recently watched a documentary of Guy’s about ADHD. I haven’t been much of a fan of his (to be fair, I’ve never really watched him though), but I enjoyed the documentary, and have a new appreciation of him now.

Even more so, since you you’ve written his dialogue with David Seymour. It’s great to see someone with the courage to challenge him. Thanks for sharing it with us Nick. 😊

I suspect one of my relations was one of the drunken scoundrels, he was a whaler from Nantucket and is buried in the Russell cemetery.

Expand full comment

There's a joke, or at least a sea shanty there, Di! A whaler who came from Nantucket... Lol.

All true! John Jay Priar. He ended up with a shop on the waterfront at Russell, probably a knock shop or booze shop!

Did you read Max Rashbrooke’s essay on The Spinoff Di? If not I think you would find it very interesting. It’s titled My Ancestors were Colonisers and asks useful questions about what we might do in response to this awareness

No I didn’t, will look for it.

They were colonial ‘names’ in Taranaki - you will know them for sure!

I'm up at Russell next week, addicted to the place. If I go into Christ Church's graveyard I'll see if I can find his grave. The restaurant on the Strand that used to be known as the Gables was a place of ill repute. Could have been that place - it's foundations are said to be whalebones

Yes, no doubt we all have one or more of those. I remember telling my friend Marina, in 1990 how ashamed I was of my "shilling a day soldier" who was rewarded for killing Maori with a piece of land in Howick. She stepped forward hugged me and said laughing "I'm descended from one Claud Fancy a drunken whaler. That is why I am thrilled our planned trip includes France, and the Notre Dame Cathedral. I will Whakapapa and walk where my great great grandfather did". Unity in love.

Excellent reading Nick. I agree with Quentin below. I love Guy Williams. I turned on the news last night to get a TV dose of Waitangi and found it pretty dumbed down in a way......and not much of it. I had tried to find YouTube live feeds, tried Maori TV...........alas alack, no joy.

I have loved as Quentin has said, the 1st hand takes from human I trust.............so thank you. And it must be coming up my subscription.........and despite being GoldCard, I will go the whole hog, because you are worth it and I want to support what you are doing, and appreciate your family.....................I love too as you say, that Guy Williams has been on the ground at these imp happenings............and I love that off screen, he relates to people....to kids. Thank you and Fi again. I heard someone had to do 7 hours in a car from Whangarei just to get there last year........

Another great read thanks Nick. No words can convey the disgust I feel when I hear or read Seymour's sarcastic and arrogant comments! ... the thought crossed my mind listening his dreadful mangling of te reo at Waitangi that it almost seemed deliberate .... yet another good reason to remove the mic! As for that craven coward and supposed PM at Akaroa how wonderful to see Justin Tipa's cutting comment on National's lack of leadership, turns out it wasn't the safe refuge Luxon imagined and yay for Guy Williams, saying what the Fourth Estate should!

Another random thought I had reading your post today when noting your great t-shirt and car ... "Oh by the way, which one's Pink?" :) Safe travels you two.

That is a good cover Nick, first time I've seen this band, they are brave taking on such a legendary band and well known song and they did it well, Maximillian Newman sure knows his way around his Gibson.

Another informative post thank you Nick. Was fortunate to come from the north so the places you visited are always in my thoughts as it is a most beautiful part of the country. Would comment on Seymour however the comment wouldn't be seemly and while he is a waste of space our great leader has allowed him to become the Musk equivalent in Aotearoa. Oops couldn't help myself. Have a great day up north and be sure to take lots of photos.

It's a major exercise re logistics on the day............but good on you. It's a bit like Mecca for Kiwis, was gonna do it this year but the logistics put us off. There wasn't much live on media to watch....so maybe we plan it for next year.....

Jokerman is one of my favourite Dylan tracks too. I enjoyed your travel diary. I don't watch TV news so it was good to read about.your experiences and observations.

Interesting counterpoint with Guy Williams making kids laugh while Mr 8% makes them cry with slops for lunch when they used to get healthy food. Nasty creep.

Another enjoyable and informative read Nick, your reporting from Waitangi has given us a sense of the atmosphere. I have been so impressed with Chippy, he really is a man of the people and cares about our country. I really hope he will be our next PM with a landslide victory for the left. We will need intelligent, competent and honest leadership and people with integrity and humanity running our country if we’re to successfully navigate the huge challenges facing us in a world of environmental and political crisis.

I must say that the AI generated quilt is very disturbing, this is supposed to be the technology that’s smarter than a human but your exercise shows it for what it really is, a gatherer of information that cannot discriminate between facts, fantasy, reality, truth and fiction but just trawls information and spits out a result, that clearly cannot be relied upon for accuracy.

Sorry you’re losing subscribers. A sign of the times I suspect with money becoming tighter for so many.

Thank you for your time and effort in bringing us the news and sharing your thoughts and experiences. Enjoy the rest of your trip and safe travels.
