Thanks Nick, a beautiful tribute. I agree. I'm sure this is even more poignant for you as you think of your friend Keith as well.....as will many who have loved ones suffering the cruelty of cancer.
If only more politicians had the courage of their convictions Like Nicki Kaye to do the right thing when voting on the divisive, hateful, damaging policies of the coalition. The culture must be so toxic.
"Nikki Kaye was what we should expect from all politicians. She worked constructively for the people of her constituency and this country, stuck to her values, and was true to what she said."
We'll put, Nick. Nikki Kaye stands out as a decent person with positive values and integrity. A rarity among many politicians.
A lovely tribute. It also gives pause to reflect on the horror and heart ache of cancer. A reminder to have discussions with your family and friends about the need to have the checks. Know your family history of cancer. Dont wait until the official screening age. Make time in that 10 minute slot with your GP to have a discussion. Be in charge of your health. Catch it EARLY.
Yes. It's awful when one so young dies from that cruel disease called cancer. Breast cancer in particular is more common in younger women than people realise. I have a niece going through treatment right now. Op tomorrow after weeks of chemo. There's no doubt Nikki was her own person ; I worked in Parliament with her and she was always friendly, never snippy across the house, unlike her fellow pre parliament researcher Nicola Willis. I was pleased when she became Deputy leader to Todd Mueller, because she, it seemed to me, was the best of them. I see that Nikki didn't want a funeral. I hope people respect that and that includes memorial services. Clearly, she had beliefs that were far from the we didn't know about ; and I really admire that. Rest easy now Nikki.
Lovely tribute to Niki, there are times when a hug says far more than words (Mārama's post.) Woman do have a tougher time as MP's than their white male counterparts ( still.) especially in the conservative National Party.
Yes your writing certainly made me shed tears for a wonderful person. She held Kiri Allen’s hand in the darkest of Kiri’s time. I will always remember when Muller resigned and Nikki decided to leave politics too. I think she was over the manipulation and those who wanted power at all costs. 💕
SORRY TO HEAR THAT BREAST CANCÈR HAßTAKEN NICKY KAYE She was þòo ýoung to lose that battle I am inhospitable at present so I can't sort out my subsçrìption@but will do so when able
It is sad that the true nature of many people, who were once in the limelight, is not universally known until after their death. Sometimes it is not for the better, but it is always upsetting when it happens to a good person who has done much for their community.
Nikki Kaye's death is a timely reminder that there are good people on both sides of the political spectrum and there always has been. So far, in NZ we have been very lucky in that regard, but there are negative forces at work which we will have to fight against. I'm sure Nikki Kaye would want us to do so.

Ngā mihi Nick - integrity and humanity are remembered long after KPIs are fed through the shredder
A beautiful tribute. Thankyou, got blurry eyes now.

RIP Nikki Kaye.
I see Nikki's family have already held a private cremation service for her as per her wishes.
